FatherAšot IV, Shahanshah of Armenia3,4 b. circa 990?, d. 1044
Gagik II of Ani, Shahanshah of Armenia was related to Ruben I, Prince of Cilicia; probably a relative of the last king of Ani, Gagik II Bagratuni.5 Gagik II of Ani, Shahanshah of Armenia married, by king's order, the daughter of Dawit',son of Senek'erim, and ruled that sector, since when Dawit' died he had left no other heir.6 He was born circa 1020?. He was the son of Ašot IV, Shahanshah of Armenia.3,4 Gagik II of Ani, Shahanshah of Armenia was the successor of Smbat III Yovhannes, King of Armenia; King of Armenia.7 Gagik II of Ani, Shahanshah of Armenia the people of Ani put him forward as successor of his uncle, who died childless, in defiance of Byzantium who had been named successor by Smbat Johannes in 1041.1 He was a witness where Ruben I, Prince of Cilicia a lieutenant of Gagik II.8 Gagik II of Ani, Shahanshah of Armenia defeated a Byzantine army sent to capture Ani in 1042.1 He was convinced by Pro-Byzantine Armenians to go to Constantinople to sign a peace treaty, but was imprisoned there instead.1 He succeeded Yovhannes also called Smbat, and ruled for two years.4 King of Armenia at Ani, Byzantine Empire, Transcaucasia, between 1043 and 1045.3,4 'Ani was taken not through warfare, but through treachery. For [the Byzantines] by the king's order succeeded in convincing Gagik using an oath and the Cross that "I need but to see you, then shall return your kingdom to you and shall write a document giving you your land and city in perpetual inheritance". As the learned say: "The wise man swears, and the fool believes", or, similarly, "The words of liars are as succulent as cheese(lor), and fools gulp them down". I do not know why [Gagik] believed them, whether because of the oaths and the Cross, because of immaturity, or because of a timid nature, but [in any case] he gave the keys of the city [of Ani] to Petros who then occupied the patriarchal throne of our Illuminator; and [Gagik] with great conditions and oaths entrusted [Petros] with all the concerns of the land. [Gagik] did not heed Vahram and the other azats who had put him on the throne, but rather listened to the deceitful support of Sargis and so left the city and went to the Greeks on a one-way journey, like a fish caught on the line, or a bird ensnared in a trap. Now when the [Byzantine] king saw [Gagik], he forgot about his oath and the intercession of the Cross. No, he obliged [Gagik] to remain with him and demanded: "Give me Ani and I shall give you in exchange [the city of] Melitine (Malatya) and the surrounding districts". But [Gagik] did not consent.' In 1045.9 He was forced to abdicate leaving no opposition to stop the invading Selchukid (or Seljuq) Turks in 1045.10 He was given a palace in Constantinople and the city of Caesarea (modern Kayseri) as compensation when the leaderless citizens of Ani, surrounded by enemies, decided to surrender Ani to the Byzantines in 1045.1 He married N. N. Arcruni, daughter of Davit' Arcruni.11,2 Gagik II of Ani, Shahanshah of Armenia acquired, from his father-in-law, the cities of Kaisareia and Tzamandos.12 He was a witness where Davit' Arcruni gave his son-in-law, Gagik II of Ani, the cities of Kaisareia and Tzamandos.12 Gagik II of Ani, Shahanshah of Armenia and Gagik, King of Kars were the "two Gagiks" ruling in Armenia at the end of independent rule. "One day (when the other Gagik had become king), Gagik went off to hunt and became drunk. At a sultry hour, he dismounted to rest under the shade of the trees, having no one with him except one small lad, since all the others were scattered about, hunting. Greeks came upon them, recognized Gagik, seized him and took him to a fortress. When the king came to his senses from the wine, he opened his eyes and exclaimed: "Where am I"? And the Romans replied: "Where is our metropolitan Markos"? And they hurled him from the wall of the fortress with insults. He crashed to the ground and died. As for the lad who was with him, an Armenian merchant purchased him and made him his son-in-law."13 Gagik II of Ani, Shahanshah of Armenia died in 1091. Murdered at Cybistra Castle and his body hung out over the castle wall.10 Gagik II of Ani, Shahanshah of Armenia was buried in Pizu, east of Kaisareia, Kappadokia, Anatolia. He was buried in the monastery he founded.12

One most important point is exactly how this state was formed. Strictly speaking, it had nothing to do with the principle of free conquest that governed invasions. The Armenian princes and feudal families that had emigrated to Cilicia and the neighbourring regions had been driven there by the Byzantine government itself, which gave them land in exchange for the territories the empire had confiscated. The formation of an autonomous Armenian state in Cilicia was the outcome of the revolt against this vassalage, in an attempt to recover lost dignity.3
"
One day (when the other Gagik had become king), Gagik went off to hunt and became drunk. As for the lad who was with him, an Armenian merchant purchased him and made him his son-in-law.

Subsequently, when the lad became a man, he went hunting for partridge with another man, near the border of Cilicia. And there stood a fortress there which they call Bardzrberd. A Byzantine (Roman) bishop resided in this fortress. An acquaintance was struck up between the man and the bishop, and they became dear to each other. They ate and drank together for many days. Yet the man had not put out of his mind what the Byzantines had done to his relative, king Gagik.

One day, when all of the bishop's deacons had gone out of the fortress to see to some needed work, the bishop was left alone there with a youth. The hunter came close to the fortress to hunt partridge; seeing the bishop on the walls, he called to him to come out so that they might eat together. The bishop invited the man to come into the fortress, but he did not consent. So the bishop came down to him, without his deacon.

When the man saw that the bishop was coming alone, he realized that there was no one else in the fortress and he said to the man with him: "Today is a good opportunity to avenge with blood the murder of our king, which the Byzantines were responsible for. Take heed! Perhaps the bishop will send you into the fortress. If so, try to take it, and inform me by some hand signal that you have, and I will kill the bishop.

As soon as the bishop arrived, they began to eat. Once the wine gave out, the bishop said to the attendant: "Go to the fortress over there and bring us wine so we may rejoice together".

The man went and gave the bishop's order to his servant. As soon as the servant kneeled over the barrel to fetch some wine, the man seized him by his feet, turned him upside down and drowned him in the wine. Going up to the walls, he notified his lord that he had taken the fortress.

Down below the walls the hunter strangled the bishop. Then entering the fortress, he seized what was there and increased his own property both by force and deceit, until he, his sons, and grandsons ruled Cilicia, city and district. This man was the forbear of king Lewon, who enlarged the boundaries by his bravery, as we shall relate in its proper place."4
"

Ruben I, Prince of Cilicia was probably a relative of the last king of Ani, Gagik II Bagratuni.3 He was of the sons and descendants of Gagik Artsruni (a 13th Century claim).5 King Gagik II of Ani had married a daughter of Davit, son of John-Senek'erim, of the Artsruni kingly line. Ruben is said to be a descendant of the Artsruni. Ruben could have been the 2nd cousin, twice removed, of Gagik II's wife. That is how they'd be related. Did she help her younger cousin to get a job at the court of the other Gagik, ruling in Kars, such that he'd be a mere aide, and lad at the time? Perhaps. -rbs.6 He married N. N. the Armenian, daughter of N. N. the Armenian.7 Ruben I, Prince of Cilicia was a lieutenant of Gagik II.8 He was born circa 1050?. He was the son of N. N. Arcruni. Ruben I, Prince of Cilicia was a relative of Gagik Bagratuni, the King of Kars, whose murder by the Greeks he witnessed.4 He witnessed the death of Gagik, King of Kars in 1068/69; He was killed by the Greeks in revenge for his murdering the metropolitan of Caesarea.7 Ruben I, Prince of Cilicia was a witness where Oshin I, Lord of Lampron established himself at Lambron circa 1080 at (now Çamliyayla), Cilicia, Anatolia.8 Ruben I, Prince of Cilicia established himself at Bardzrberd in the Taurus Mountains circa 1080.8 He established his authority in the mountainous regions of Cilicia, founding a principality that bore his name: Rubinian in 1080.3 Prince of Cilicia at Armenia Minor, Anatolia, between 1080 and 1092.3 He died in 1092.1 He was the predecessor of Constantine I, Prince of Cilicia; Prince of Cilicia.8,9
