Pope Sergius III was a Roman of noble birth and the son of Benedict.1,2 He was born at Rome, Italy.1 He was the son of Benedict of Rome.2 Pope Sergius III became a supporter of Pope Stephen VI (VII), who exhumed Formosus' corpse, subjected it to a posthumous trial (the "Cadaver Synod"), and nullified Formosus' pontificate and acts in 896.1 He was elected pope by Stephen's party in 898.1 He reappeared in Rome, and with the military help of the Tusculani Alberic I of Spoleto, deposed Christopher, who with Leo was apparently strangled by Sergius' orders in 904.1 He was consecrated pope on 29 January 904 at Rome, Italy.1,2 He allied himself with Theophylactus, who became virtual dictator of the papal administration and, through the pope's help, expanded his territorial claims between 29 January 904 and 14 April 911.1 119th Pope between 29 January 904 and 14 April 911.1 He associated with Maròzia di Roma, daughter of Teofilatto, senatore romano and Theodora "the Elder" of Rome, circa 905; Supposed.3 Pope Sergius III was reputed to have been the lover of his ally Theophylactus' fifteen year old daughter Marozia, and the father of her son, the future pope John XI.1 He died on 14 April 911 at Rome, Italy.1 Pope Sergius III was buried in Rome, Italy. Sergius completely restored the Lateran Basilica, but he was buried in St. Peter's.2 "That he put his two predecessors to death, and by illicit relations with Marozia had a son, who was afterwards John XI, must be regarded as highly doubtful. These assertions are only made by bitter or ill-informed adversaries, and are inconsistent with what is said of him by respectable contemporaries."2
