St. Guilhem de Gellone, comte de Toulouse was the father of Eudes, comte d' Orléans; per Jacques Saillot's "Les Seize Quartiers des Reines et Imperatrices Francaises," the son of William de Gellone by his wife Cunegonde de France, daughter of Carloman II.5 St. Guilhem de Gellone, comte de Toulouse was the hero of the ninth-century "Roman de Guillame au court nez".4 Per Stuart's RFC, some serious researchers claim that William of Gellone is identical with Isaac the Jew.3 Margrave of Septimania at Narbonne.3 He was said by some to be of Frankish origin, others to be of the House of David. He was per Catholic sources, "His father's name was Theoderic, his mother's Aldana, and he was in some way connected with the family of Charles the Great, at whose court he was present as a youth."4 His father's name was Theoderic, his mother's Aldana, and he was in some way connected with the family of Charles the Great (Charlemagne), at whose court he was present as a youth.4 Also called St. William of Gellone.6 Also called Wilhelm I "Kurznase" von Toulouse.7 He was related to Bernard "de stirpe regali", marquis de Septimania; the putative son of Guilhem de Gellone and mother unknown.1 St. Guilhem de Gellone, comte de Toulouse married Kunigunde des Francs, daughter of Carloman, roi des Francs and Gerberge (?).7 St. Guilhem de Gellone, comte de Toulouse was born in 755.2,4,1 He was the son of Theodoric I of Septimania and Alda des Francs.2,3,4 St. Guilhem de Gellone, comte de Toulouse accompanied his 1st cousin, Charles, King of the Franks (Charlemagne), in his expedition against the Moors of Spain circa 778. He married Witberga (?); His 2nd.7 St. Guilhem de Gellone, comte de Toulouse married Kunigunde des Francs, daughter of Carloman, roi des Francs and Gerberge (?), before 779; His 1st.3,1 Marquis of Septimania at France between 790 and 806.8 2nd Count of Toulouse at Aquitaine, France, between 790 and 806.4,9,10 St. Guilhem de Gellone, comte de Toulouse was the actual field commander of a large force of Franks, Burgundians, Aquitanians, and Provençals that was assembled, supported by important contingents of Gascons under Duke Lupo and of Goths who were commanded by Bera, probably count of Roussillon, and though Louis the Pious officially headed the expedition, actual field command seems to have belonged to him, and this force crossed the Pyrenees and advanced south to capture the important city of Barcelona and the nearby castle of Tarrassa in 801.11 He was founder of a Benedictine monastery, since called S. Guilhem le Desert, in the valley of Gellone, near Lodeve in the Diocese of Maguelonne in 804.4 He became a monk at Gellone in 806.12 He retired as Count of Toulouse and Marquis of Septimania to become a monk in 806.8,1 He was the predecessor of comte de Toulouse Beggo des Francs; Count of Toulouse.8 St. Guilhem de Gellone, comte de Toulouse was the predecessor of comte de Toulouse Beggo des Francs; Marquis of Septimania.8 Count of Gellon.13 St. Guilhem de Gellone, comte de Toulouse had retired to the shelter of the abbey of Gellone to end his days as a monk, and his statesmanship and military ability were lost to the Midi before 812.14 "William is remembered as a member of Charlemagne's Court, and as a great (and successful) campaigner against the Muslims in Spain. Regarded as an exemplary and highly chivalrous knight, he is the subject of several early Chansons. He retired to the Benedictine monastery at Gellone, and was canonized in 1066. A muted version of his story also has it that he, like his father Makhir-Theodoric, remained faithful to his Jewish heritage which, if accurate, must surely set some sort of record as a Mediaeval Jewish saint."15 He died between 28 May 812 and 21 May 815 at Gellone, France.2,3,4,1 He was canonised in 1066?.1 His Feast Day.
