Three marriages occur so early in the Prouz ancestry that they are not even recorded in the pedigree outlined by Prince. They are briefly noticed by Vivian. Lega-Weekes contends that quarter 4 signifies the marriage of a William or Robert Prouz to the daughter and sole heiress of Giles de Gidleigh. My own investigations uncovered references to deeds of 1220 and 1229 issued to William Prouz and Alice de Kideleg, which referred to the Manor of Kideleg. The original source mistakenly identified the placename as the modern Little Cadleigh, but it is certainly Gidleigh, former seat of the Prouz family (another William Prouz built the fortified manor house there, presently known as Gidleigh Castle).2 Also called William Prouz.2 William Prouz was born circa 1185?.
