     Roger de Berkeley was the son of 2nd Lord of Berkeley Castle William de Berkeley.¹ An adherent of Empress Maud (this adherence denied by Smith and Fosbroke, in the "Lives of the Berkeley's, page 11). He "under went" says Dugdale, "a very hard fate, through the perfidiousness and cruelty of Walter, brother to Milo, Earl of Hereford, his seeming friend, and kinsman by consanguinity, being treacherously seized on, stripped naked, exposed to scorn, put into fetters, and thrice drawn by a rope about his neck, on a gallows, at his own castle gates, with threats that if he would not deliver his castle to the earl, he should suffer a miserable death; and when he was, by the barbarous usage, almost dead, carried to prison, there to endure further tortures." Circa 1141.¹

     Hawise (?) married John Maltravers of Lytchet Maltravers, son of John Maltravers of Wellcombe and Alice FitzGeoffrey. Hawise (?) was living in 1222.¹

     John Maltravers was the son of Walter Maltravers and N. N. (?). John Maltravers was mentioned in Pipe Rolls entries in Somerset and Wiltshire between 1158 and 1169 at England.¹

     Walter Maltravers was the son of Hugh Maltravers. Walter Maltravers held lands in Berkshire and Dorset at England.¹ According to Cockayne's "Complete Peerage", "Walter Mautravers, his [brother William's] contemporary, has left much slighter traces in records that have come down to us, but his appearances are in connection with land, etc., in Berks and Dorset and his wife's inheritance in Leicestershire, and it would seem to be through him that the family was carried on."¹ He married N. N. (?).

     Hugh Maltravers was the son of Hugh Maltravers. "According to Cockayne's "Complete Peerage" ,writing of his father, Hugh of the Conquest: "If an experienced warrior in 1066, he would have been quite an old man in 1102, the year of the foundation of Montacute Priory . . . . But before 1102 the grant of land near Preston by Mautravers could not have been made; therefore in the chart pedigree the grantor is placed tentatively as probably of the next generation, very possibly the son of Hugh the Domesdat tenant."      According to Cockayne's "Complete Peerage" "The Hugh who held land on so large a scale in 1086, and yet transmitted to his descendants neither a Norman surname nor a name derived from his English aquisitions, but merely a nickname of the rough Norman type [i.e. 'bad transit'], was (it is submitted) most probably a Norman of no distinguished family, but of distinguished service at the Conquest, and rewarded in accordance therewith."¹ Hugh Maltravers was born circa 1040 at Normandy.
