From Dr. Marion Elisah Tarvin, "The Muscogees or Creek Indians, from 1519 to 1893": About David Tate, "When a boy was taken North by his uncle, Gen. McGillivray, and placed at school under the supervision Gen. George Washington, where he remained five years, and after the death of McGillivray David was sent to Inverness College, Scotland, by Panton of Pensacola, FL, with McGillivray's son Alexander, where he finished his education."
In 1800 David returned to the Creek Nation in 1800. He took possession of his property, which had been in the hands of his late uncle Alexander McGillivray.
From Dr. Marion Elisha Tarvin of his grandfather, David Tate: "He was a man of stern character, reserved manners and classical education, and was a most wonderful judge of human nature, and memory of men. He was possessed of an ample fortune and dispensed It with a liberal hand in the way of charity, on those who were worthy and in need. He had a remarkable influence over man whom he desired to bend to his will."
He lost his wife Mary Randon and 2 of his daughters at the Massacre at Fort Mims, led by his brother Red Eagle. Dr. Marion Elisha Tarvin said that David Tate was at Pierce's (3 miles away) during the attack.

Their children were: Thomas Tate Tunstall (appointed U.S. Consul to Cadiz, Spain, in 1856, returning to AL in 1865. In1888 he was appointed Consul to San Salvador by President Grover Cleveland, and removed by President Harrison. He was educated at The University of NC; m. ? Crossland), Mary Ann Tunstall (m. Dr. William I. Tunstall), Peyton Randolph Tunstall (m. Laura Slaughter), Lucy Tunstall (m. Alex Lumsden, nephew of Frank Lumsden, former editor of the "New Orleans Picayune"), Elizabeth Tunstall (m. John D. Weatherford of Monroe Co., AL, nephew of William Weatherford; Dr. Marion Elisha Tarvin "was at her wedding which was a brilliant affair."), Rebecca Tunstall (m. William Hobbes), George Washington Tunstall and Edmund Tunstall. Louisa Matilda Mary Tate died 5/9/1875 Mobile, AL.
William Tarvin II and his wife Mary Miller were among the victims of the Massacre at Fort Mims (1814).

The writer of an important chronolgy of the families. finished his literary studies under the Beal brothers, at Wilkens' Academy in Maury County, Tennessee, after which he studied medicine and dentistry and was graduated from Baltimore College of Dental surgery in 1867. Was a dentist. Was 2nd Lt. in the 40th Ala. volunteer regiment, Holtzclaw's Brigade, Withers' Division, Polk's corps Confederate Army.
Married Sophia Frances White, youngest daughter of Pleasant White of Sumpter Co., AL. (Pleasant's father was John Coats, who came to Alabama from SC in the very early days). Their children were: Pleasant Floyd Tarvin, Beauregard Coats Tarvin.
