Though born in Virginia, Frances Burrus Snelling was an early resident of Western Kentucky, helped settle western Missouri, followed the California trail to the gold fields, and finally returned to Missouri, to die in the midst, in both time and place, of the Civil War. Her own children, grandchildren, and closest relatives, in addition to those who stayed in California, were pioneers in Oregon and went to west Texas at a time when Indians were still killing their new neighbors. She lost her husband, a daughter, a grandson, and a great grand son to illness, and a son to murder, all in California. Another son was assassinated by Yankee soldiers while trying to make his way to her as she lay dying. A pioneer in every sense, she was also, ac cording to writers of the time, a great lady to whom a number of people owed their lives.    See "Frances Burrus Snelling, Forty-Niner"

At the age of about five, Addison came with his father to an area of west central Missouri, later named Johnson County.  He was a farmer and brought his fifteen year old bride there in 1849.  The couple continued to live with John Draper until about 1855, when Addison purchased land from his father and built his own house.  Family oral tradition tells of the time Yankee soldiers came to the family home late in 1863 looking for Addison.  Not finding him, they set the house afire, with people inside.  Their daughter, Lou, was an infant, and was thrown out of an upstairs window to someone on the ground.  A newspaper account, while not corroborating the story, does state, "The (Old High Point Baptist) Church Book (registry) was consumed by fire with the residence of A. Draper in 1863."  In 1872, the family moved into the town of Windsor, Henry County.
