At the age of about
five, Addison came with his father to an area of west central Missouri, later
named Johnson County. He was a
farmer and brought his fifteen year old bride there in 1849. The couple continued to live with John
Draper until about 1855, when Addison purchased land from his father and built
his own house. Family oral
tradition tells of the time Yankee soldiers came to the family home late in
1863 looking for Addison. Not
finding him, they set the house afire, with people inside. Their daughter, Lou, was an infant, and
was thrown out of an upstairs window to someone on the ground. A newspaper account, while not
corroborating the story, does state, "The (Old High Point Baptist) Church
Book (registry) was consumed by fire with the residence of A. Draper in
1863." In 1872, the family
moved into the town of Windsor, Henry County.

George Gordon Ritchie is located Clopton Family Archives. The very informative article discussed
at length his career. After the
D-Day invasion of Normandy, he went to Normandy and supervised the draining and
restoring of peat bog fields that had been flooded by the Germans. The peat bogs had been major sources of
fuel for Allied forces in Europe as well as for Great Britian's civilian
population. His successful
operation, conducted primarily with German prisoners of war, gained him
national attention. Later he was
recognized as one of the nation's experts in fuel research. See "untitled" to find
