"GADGIRTH CASTLE was of great antiquity and was replaced with a manor house in 1808. Gadgirth was the seat of the CHALMERS family who can be traced back to the 12th. century. They were active in the Reformation and supporters of JOHN KNOX who dispended the sacrament there.

The BURNETT family inherited Gadgith through marriage into the CHALMERS family. It was Colonel BURNETT who built the new mansion house."
