"The first family to brave the wilderness in covered wagons and come tothis part of Texas was the Elam family. They came from Illinois in 1838 to take advantage of the Texas Land Grants Bill. The wagons carried Jessie Elam, his two sons Isaac and Billie ( William B.) Most of the land a little south of what is now Lake June road almost to the river on thewest and extending to Prairie Creek on the east was Elam property by 1907.  This area was called "Elam Station" this community comsisted of two general stores, a post office, several residential homes, and a
sectoion house where the train stopped. there was also an Elam Park with a dance pavillion & live entertainment."

"A Stake in the Prairie Mesquite, Texas".
from page 26  "Jesse Elalm , the patriarch of an extended family, settled on a section of land two miles south of James J. Beeman's tract, his farm becoming the location of the Elam settlement.  He emigrated from Georgia."
"William B. Elam , a family man born inTennessee came to Texas from Missouri, ( possibly No'Ocea County) and his claim at the intersection of present Buckner Blvd and Elam Roads touchedcorners with that of Jesse Elam."  Page 31-- Isaac Elam ( I believe this to be another son of Jesse
and William's brother) also a Kentuckian, who also tried Illinois and Missouri before coming to Texas, divided his section into two parts--one located on Cox's north line in the ElamCommunity and the other on Cox's south line against the Trinity".  These land grants were located in what was known as thee "Ferris Quadrangle"approx 40 sq mi which Ferris either failed to survey or failed to "allocate" to valid certificate -holders before the Peters Colony became operative.  The map shows Jessie Elam

In a statement made by Mary Elizabeth (Robinson) Elam -wife of William B. Elam, on Feb 1, 1902 taken in a statement concerning the will of her son James Franklin she states:

"My name is Mary E. Elam I am 79 years old, I reside in Elam Station, Dallas County Texas.  I was married in 1840 in Newton County MO to Wm. B Elam and came to Texas with my husband Wm. B. Elam and two children Arlimissa and Isaac in the year 1844."

From "Pioneers or Yesteryear 1848-1973"
Winnie (Elam )Horton states: Three Elam Brothers started to Texas; two of them made it here- one of them being my grandfather, "Uncle Billy" Elam. As I remember, he and my grandmother, Polly (Robinson) had about
fourteen children, including three sets of twins.  (I have only calculated two sets of twins)

In "History of Bandera County Texas" is an excellent article about thefamily of George Washington Elam.
