Ken Shute Lookup Results-- I found what appear to be a few bench mark references for your (Edward) Lafayette DAVIS and family in New Haven, Huron County, Ohio, some of which you probably already have, as well as two lonngggg shot possibilities for his family in the 1880 Census. Bench Marks- 1. Marriage to Hattie M. SNYDER, 1896. Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications. Lafayette DAVIS m. Hattie M. SNYDER 14 Oct 1896, Book 7, Page 63. 2. Huron County, 1905 Ohio Rural Mail Directory. Read name, rural free delivery and number of mail route, name of the post office from which the mail route starts, distance patron lives from post office, township in which patron lives, occupation of patron, amount of property owned by patron, and members of patron's family. "Lafayette DAVIS, rfd 1, Greenwich, 6 1/2 m., New Haven, t, occ. farmer (Am), own 95 a., Mrs. Harriet, Carl, Hazel, Clyde." 3. 1910 United States Federal Census (Ancestry.com) Name- Lafayette Z. DAVIS Age in 1910- 39 Estimated birth year- 1870, Birthplace- OH Home in 1910- New Haven Twp., Huron County, OH. Image- Read name, relationship, age, place of birth (POB), POB of Father, POB of Mother. Lafayette Z. DAVIS, head, 39, OH, United States, United States, Harriet, wife, 36, OH, OH, OH. Carlton, son, 12, OH, OH, OH. Hezelle (Hazel?), daughter, 8, OH, OH, OH. (Theodore)?, son, 6, OH, OH, OH. (Note- at the top of this same image page, members of a SNYDER family are listed, very possibly related to Harriet SNYDER.) 4. Ohio Death Certificate Index (ohiohistory.org). Name- E.S. DAVIS County- Huron Date of Death- Sept. 22, 1923 Volume Number- 4262 Certificate Number- 55157. (Note- I could find no reference to an Edward or Lafayette DAVIS in our Birth Index, 1867-1908, for Huron County, Ohio. So if he were born in Ohio, as the 1910 Census indicates, it was in another county in Ohio. I also could find no listing for either Edward or Lafayette DAVIS (or for his wife Harriet DAVIS) in our Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscription Book, which seems a bit strange since he was listed in the death certificate index for Huron County in 1923.) Long Shot Possibilities from the 1880 Census. 1. 1880 United States Census. From Ancestry. Com's Images. Census Place- Cadiz, Harrison, Ohio James DAVIS, self, 57, OH, farmer, POB father- MD, POB mother- VA. Elizabeth DAVIS, wife, 40, OH, keeping house, POB father- OH, POB mother- OH. (Note- I include this census record since you mentioned the possibility that "Edward's parents died young and he was raised by foster parents.") 2. 1880 United States Census. From Ancestry.com's Images. Census Place: Oak Hill, Jackson, Ohio John DAVIS, self, 40, Wales, stone mason, Wales, Wales. Margaret DAVIS, wife, 40, Wales, keeping house, Wales, Wales. I know my ggg grandparents Israel STALEY and Louisiana (Lucy Ann) HELTMAN were married 3 June 1847 in Ashland (County I think, not town) OH and that she died 18 May 1868 according to her brother's newspaper obit. I also know their children are living in her parents' home in the 1870 Federal Census records. Now I'm wondering if Israel possibly married again and had a new family. Would you please check the marriage records for Israel/Isreal STALEY/STEALY/STEALEY born about 1826 in Pennsylvania? This man has been evading STALEY/STEALY researchers for a couple of decades and I'd love to find him!

Judy Baker Look Up Results - I did not find a listing for Dighton or his wife in Huron County OGS Cemetery Inscriptions book. However, please see this link in the archives for information on the marriage and death records for Dighton REED: https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/th/read/OHHURON/1999-11/0941731079. If this link does not work, you can find the entry by searching for "Dighton REED" at www.google.com. I did not find the GREEN family members in the cemetery book either. However, there was one burial in Edwards Grove Cemetery which may be that of a child of Dighton and Lorena GIFFORD REED. The REEDs were found in Ripley Township in the 1850 Census. p. 818, Edwards Grove Cemetery, Ripley Township, Section 1, Row 6. 24 REED, Charles M. s/o of D. and L. REED d. 11 Jy 1856, age 1y 11 m

I am searching for my mother's dad's parents. He was Thomas David DABBS and married a lady named Lillie, and had a child named Susie May. When Lillie died, he married my grandmother, Jessie Bell GURGANIUOS DABBS. They had three children- Alberta (Bertie), Elizabeth (Lizzie), who was my mother, and Sylvester (Bud). I have reason to believe that Thomas' father was Archibald DABBS. Archibald was either born in Ohio, or in Gulledge, Anson County, North Carolina. He was married to an Elizabeth, and lived in Anson County in the 1850's. There was also a girl named Elizabeth HUNTLEY living with them and a family of HUNTLEYs living next door, so I feel there is some relation. In the 1870 Census, Archibald lived in Wateree (now Lugoff) in Kershaw County, South Carolina. The reason I believe Archibald (50) is Thomas' father, is because according to Thomas' birthdate, he would have been 13 in the 1870 Census, and there is a Thomas listed at age 13. The name Amanda is listed second, at age 29, but there is no relationship given. There are four other children listed, no relations given, William (15), Green (5), Adolphus (1) and a two year old that I don't remember the name for. I would like to know if Amanda is Archibald's second wife, or what kind of relation she is. I would like to know also if all of the children are hers, because the ages are so far apart between Thomas and the four younger ones. Any help would be much appreciated.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I couldn't find the maiden name of Phebe, wife of Abijah, Jr., but I did find some other Abijah BAKER Jr.odds and ends which I offer in the event you might not have some of them. 1. His parents' names were Abijah and Mary Jane BAKER (maiden name unknown). This comes from The Gateway to the West by Bowers and Short. On page 650, Huron County, Ohio Death Records- Abijah died 12-2-1868, age 66. Place of Death- Fitchville; Place of Birth- Onondaga County, NY. 2. Seven BAKER brothers, including Abijah, Jr., came to Fairfield Township, Huron County, Ohio from Onondaga County, NY. Spencer and wife Betsey FOOTE came in 1819, along with William BAKER and wife Leah DAVIS. The other five brothers (Samson, George, Sylvester, Jefferson J., and Abijah, Jr. ) came to Fairfield during the next few years. Jefferson had married Samantha ADAMS; George had married Maria MOFFITT. The Baker boys settled on various lots in section 3. This information can be found on page 352 of the History of the Firelands, by W. W. Williams, 1879, Chapter on Fairfield Township, Huron County, Ohio 3. Of the seven BAKER brothers, cemetery inscriptions can be found for William, Sylvester, Abijah (Jr.), and Spencer. Death dates can be found on page 93 of the Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscription book, Day Cemetery, Fairfield Township. They are-- William-d. 12 Feb 1869, age 71y, 9m; Sylvester-d. 1824, age 24y (?); Abijah (Jr.)-d. 4 Sep 1868, age 66y 6m 11 d; and Spencer-d. 16 Mar 1870 in 80th year. (Note- the death date of 4 Sep 1868, differs somewhat from the death date of 2 Dec 1868 cited in the Gateway to the West, and in the Huron County, Ohio Death Index, 1867-1908.) In addition, on this same page- Mary BAKER, w/o Abijah BAKER, Sr., d. 13 Apr 1829, age 66y, and Phebe BAKER, w/o A(bijah) BAKER, Jr., d. 8 Aug 1838, age 36y, 9m, 26d. Amelia BAKER, d/o Abijah, (Jr.) and Phebe BAKER, d. 15 Oct 1832, age 7y, 10m, ? This would seem to put the marriage of Phebe and Abijah about 1824 or earlier. An 1825 Tax list for Huron County, Ohio, includes the name of Abijah BAKER. 4. Following the marriage of Abijah BAKER, Jr. to Juliett BURGETT on 27 Feb 1840, both the 1850 and 1860 Federal census show the place of birth of Abijah, Jr. as Rhode Island, and that for Juliett as New York, However, the Gateway to the West reference puts Abijah's place of birth as Onondaga County, NY. Further, Ancestry.com's One World Tree gives the place of birth for Abijah as Providence, RI. 5. Since the marriage of Abijah and Phebe BAKER doesn't appear in the Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer publications, perhaps it would be worth checking into marriages of the early 1800's in Onondaga County, New York, or Providence, Rhode Island. I made an initial pass into these two places via the usgenweb site, but this quick look was unproductive.

I would like to make contact with anyone searching the family names of BOWLES and ROGERS in the New London, Huron Co. Ohio area. My BOWLES family arrived from England in the mid to late 1850's and lived there for many decades. I believe they settled there because they had relatives in the county. I am researching Richard (Rich'd) and Diana SMITH BOWLES as well as their sons, George BOWLES and William BOWLES, who was a Civil War soldier and later owned a tavern by the railroad tracks. The names of their wives were Mary SAXTON, and Ida ROGERS, who had a brother, Orley. Ida and George had Children: Harley (my grandpa), Lena, and Otto, who spelled his name BOALES. I have so little on these people & am sure hoping I can find someone else who is searching. I live in California and could sure use the help of a "search angel".

In one census, an Elizabeth HUNTLEY is living with Archibald DABBS and his wife, and there is a family of HUNTLEYs living next door. I know that family members used to stick together and buy houses beside each other back in the 1800's.

I am still seeking information on the family of Archibald DABBS. I am getting different information from censuses, and his birthplace has been listed as Ohio, North Carolina and South Carolina. So I have no idea of which is right. I believe he was born in Ohio, moved to Anson County, NC, and later to Kershaw County, SC. I believe that he is my great grandfather.

Tom Neel Look Up Results-- Several years ago, I corresponded with someone on the BOWLES family. I cannot find any record of this at the moment. The file might be up at the New London Public Library and I'll check at the next opportunity. If it is the family of which I am thinking, they probably did operate a tavern. The Railroad Street area was called "Bloody Run" in those days. Here are some things I was able to find in the local published books-- BOWLES Family- 1870 - Richard BOWLS, 51, England; Dianna 55 England, George 20 England [no William] - page 385A, New London Deaths- Richard BOWLES, d. 1 Jan 1875, vol. 1, p. 44. Infant BOWLES, d. 1 Jan 1874 [sic?] v. 1, p. 44. Nothing in the Huron Co cemetery book. 10 Feb 1873 - William BOWLES noted with land bordering the burned district - think in one of the houses and/or building along the south side of South Railroad Street. George BOWLES m. 30 Jun 1872 Mary Saxton - v. 2, p. 307. William BOWLES m. 26 Dec 1867 Minerva Garrison - v. 2, p. 96. Naturalizations in Probate Court- Richard BOWLES, England, 1868 Declaration & Record of First Papers, v. 2, p. 125; 1871 Proof of Residence, v. 1, p. 267; 1871 Naturalization Record, v. 2, p. 201. William BOWLES, France, 1866 Proof of Residence, v. 1, p. 129; 1866 Naturalization Record, v. 2, p. 86. George BOWLES vs. Mary BOWLES, divorce, mentioned in New London Record, 5 Jun 1890, p. 1. Mrs. BOWLES, died 13 Jun 1895 (death noted in New London Record, 20 Jun 1895, p. 5). New London Record, 27 Jun 1929, in Wm. B. Thom historical column- "Close by lived the Sheldons and Henry St. John, and, not far away, Dick BOWLES, who was a farmer. Dick hailed from England, as one would have known from his accent. Of his two sons, William and George, the first named was a member of the Twelfth Ohio Battery. Dick BOWLES sold his farm to the Ledgetts, who entered upon a long period of brickmaking." This would be on the north side of North Railroad Street near the intersection with the current Ledgett Street.

I have previously posted a question about Lottie BAKER who married Ernest PENNELL in Huron County, Ohio, in 1893. I looked in the census records in an attempt to find parents and grandparents for her. I found these Huron County, Ohio, families. 1880, Ohio, Huron County, Ripley Township. Frank BAKER, age 34, born Ohio. Ella, age 31, wife, born New York. Lillie, age 9, daughter, born Ohio. Hattie, age 6, daughter, born Ohio. Lottie, age 4, daughter, born Ohio. 1850, Ohio, Huron County, Greenwich Township. L. M. BAKER, age 37, born New York. Mary, age 36, born Connecticut. Lucina, age 11, born Ohio. William C., age 8, born Ohio. Frank, age 4, born Ohio. Do these families look familiar to anyone? In particular I'm trying to find a connection to a VAN SCOY or KNAPP family in Huron County since I've found Ernest PENNELL and sons in reunion records. (I own a copy of the cemetery inscriptions book and so am not asking for information from it.)

Tom Neel Look Up Results - I found a little more correspondence on your BOWLES family in the family files at the New London Public Library. The person who was working on the family was Nancy COWENS, 153 East Home Ave, Flint MI 48505. This is back in November 1978. She was born Nancy Jane BOALES, 12 Nov 1933 at New London Hospital, Dr. Roasberry officiating. Her parents were Otto William BOALES, age 37, laborer, born Ohio, and Helen Mary PETERSON, age 30, born Hamburg, Germany. The certificate noted that there had been seven children born alive to the mother; 1 child born alive, but now dead. This girl, Nancy Jane BOALES now COWENS had been adopted by another family at age 3 or 4. Of her large family, she could only remember the names Catharine and Jimmy as siblings. According to the notes in the file, my cousin Paula Griffin, in 1978, called Vadah Hotchkiss, an older New London resident at the time, who said that this Otto BOALES worked for A.K. Basore who raised horses. She remembered that his youngest boy was named Dewey BOALES, maybe age 3 or 4 around 1928. Otto and his wife separated after leaving New London. There was another daughter Margaret Rose, who supposedly married into a wealthy Ashland family. The Otto BOALES family was very poor according to Mrs. Hotchkiss. Vadah's parents had cooked their food for them when they first moved to High Street until they were able to get a stove. Mrs. Griffin also questioned another older resident at that time, Myrtle Ray, who said that she recalled when this Otto BOALES lived on North Main Street in a house belonging to Charlie Graffice. Mr. Graffice operated a thrashing rig and BOALES worked for him. The family moved to Willard or Norwalk, she thought. The people above named are all now deceased, however, in 1978, they were able to determine that Otto BOALES was actually still living in a trailer court on the north end of Ashland and he had a son living in Polk, OH at that time. I don't know if this girl adopted out was able to meet with her father. I gather that she was not as interested in her father as she was in meeting her brothers and sisters. According to notes in this file, George BOWLES and wife Mary SAXTON had a daughter (not named), born Sept 1874 in New London - Vol. 1, p. 95. George BOWLES and wife Ada ROGERS had three children listed here- Otto, born 14 Dec 1898 in New London - Vol. 4, p. 8; Lena, born 6 Oct 1899 in New London - Vol. 4, p. 9; and Harley, born 22 Feb 1902 in Fairfield Twp - Vol. 4, p. 12. There is a death for an infant of G. BOWLES in 1874 New London, age 1 day -Vol. 1, p. 44. The Richard BOWLES that died Jan 1875 New London, was age 16 days, and died of scarlatina - Vol. 1, p. 44; so that was not the immigrant, Richard BOWLES. Hope this provides a few more clues in your search. "Bloody Run", by the way, was the nickname of a series of taverns that were operated along Railroad Street and South Railroad Street. The railroad workers would supposedly get off the engine as the train slowed, hit one of the bars, and then jump back on the caboose. They pretty much died out in the very early 1900s.

BROOKS, d. 25 Apr 1848 (stone broken - date may be wrong). BROOKS, Sarah, w/o M. BROOKS, d. 31 Jul 1850 age 45 y 5 m (rest of age cemented in). BROOKS, Sarah Jane, d/o M. & S. BROOKS, d. 8 Nov 1857 age 20 y 8 m 26 d. BROOKS, John, s/o M. & S. BROOKS, d. 6 Jun 1858 age 12 y 10 m 19 d (stone broken). These four stones are just west of the mausoleum but on the north side of the lane just behind my Coleman ancestors. I'm not certain that the so-called Cholera Cemetery in New London even existed. I have seen it penciled in on one of the village-owned maps in the area where the New London Reservoir now is, back behind one of the farmhouses that were torn down along the north side of County Line Road. However, when the reservoir was constructed, there was a lot of opposition to the project, and the Cholera Cemetery idea circulated widely. There is indeed a small square of land at that location on earlier maps, but without the notation that had been added. The Kirkpatrick family, who were raised there as children and who still reside on the same road, say that the little square of land set aside on the maps surrounded a natural spring, and that there was no cemetery, at least at the location marked. There was once a cemetery nearby on the corner of County Line Road and Euclid Road and one stone, for Phebe Underhill, d. 24 Jan 1844 age 69 years, is still back in the fencerow just south of the New London village water department building. This stone is actually in Ruggles Twp., Ashland County, being on the south side of the road. It is not known if there were once more stones. Because the Cholera Cemetery was a rumor, everyone seems to know about it now, whether they are interested in local history or not. I just have not seen any evidence for it in any other records.

My direct ancestor Mary Ann POWERS died in Sandusky of cholera 23 August 1852 as reported in the local paper. I've not found her burial anywhere and suspect the local cholera cemetery. Her husband David POWERS, the former postmaster of Sandusky, seems to have died by 1857 but I can't find his grave either. Can anyone find more info on this for me?

I have been trying in vain to find my 3rd Gr.Grandparents burial in Huron Co. or perhaps Ashland Co. (since the counties changed during their life time). They were Jacob T. and Rachel Ames UNDERHILL. They lived in Greenwich. He was born 1785, she 1784. They were in the 1850 census for Ruggles Twp., living with their son Harvey C. & Anna Seymore UNDERHILL, but were not listed in 1860. They had come to Huron Co. in the early 1800's we believe from New York. They were strong Quakers and descendants of Capt. John UNDERHILL. The UNDERHILL Society doesn't have any record of Jacob or Rachel's death, and I've searched the Huron Co. deaths and burials and they don't show up. There is supposed to be an UNDERHILL graveyard on the property that once was owned by this set of UNDERHILLs, but there isn't anything there that shows who might of been there, or exactly where on the property they might of been located.

Shirley ? Look Up Results - I know that my Daniel S. STEVENS' parents were Ezra STEVENS [1779-1866] born in MA, and Lucy FOOTE [1786-1861] born in NY. I have a well worked, over and over, and studied outline for my STEVENS family that I have been working off and on for five years. All I knew when I started out was that my grandpa, William Lindley NELSON [1878-1953] was born in North Fairfield, Ohio and his mother's maiden name was STEVENS. Searching censuses, I found Frances STEVENS and thus the rest is history. According to my ongoing research, her sibling, Charles, is listed as Daniel's first born. Charles A. Ken Shute Look Up Results - I'm afraid I had no luck in locating the burial sites of Jacob and Rachel UNDERHILL. Our Huron County, OH cemetery inscriptions book did not have them listed. I also found a web site which has cemetery inscriptions for Ashland County, OH. A quick check through all of these cemeteries was unsuccessful as well. The only thing I found on the UNDERHILLs in our Huron County publications was in our plat book of 1845 for Huron County, OH. It shows property for Jacob T. UNDERHILL, Benjamin UNDERHILL, and Daniel UNDERHILL in section 3, of Ruggles Township (before it became part of Ashland County, OH). If you want details go to sites.rootsweb.com/~ohhuron. Click on "view the old home page HERE." Scroll to 1845 Plat map index/images. Go to section on images and click on "Ruggles Twp., Section 3." (last row of image page). The UNDERHILLs can be found at the top of this page. From Ancestry.com I find Jacob UNDERHILL and family listed in the 1840 and 1850 Federal Census - residing in Ruggles Township, Huron County, OH in 1840, and in Ruggles Township, Ashland County, OH in 1850. 1840 Census: Jacob UNDERHILL, Ruggles, Huron, OH. Martha VAN SCOY, daughter of Cornelius VAN SCOY and his wife Jane POWELL, was born in 1832 in Yates County, New York. Her family moved to Huron County, Ohio, and she is with them in New London, Huron County, Ohio at the 1850 census. According to the published marriage records of Huron County she married in Huron County, Ohio, 3 October 1852 William EARLS. I have not found any further record of them. I've checked the (Huron County) cemetery inscriptions and US census records in particular. In the 1860 census of Hancock County, Illinois, I found a William EARLS age 28 born in Virginia with wife Mary age 22 born in Virginia. The only Martha EARLS I've found in the 1860 census is age 14 and living in Seneca County, New York. Does this couple look familiar to anyone on this list?

I "know" Geri. We're distant cousins on the ASHLEY side of the family. She is a direct descendant on the ASHELY side and I am from the STARR side. We "thought" the last name might be McCAMMON/MCGAMMAN which is more common and for which there is a rich history. The name MCGAMMON does not appear anywhere. Thank you for the dates they passed. I do not have that and I'm not sure if Geri does either. I'll have to double check with her about Clinton ASHLEY. James and Joel ASHLEY are also mentioned in the "History of the Firelands" pgs. 204 and 207.

I have asked before about Benjamin WILLIAMS married to Sarah PURDY but I still haven't been able to prove they are the parents of my Martin PURDY Williams b. June 26, 1821 Cayuga Co. NY. married Salinda Arvilla HICKS June 27, 1847 in Huron Co. Ohio. There was a Benjamin WILLIAMS b. 1786 in the 1830 census in Sempronius, Cayuga Co. with a male child at an age that would fit my Martin. In the Bronson, Huron Co. census of 1840 a Benjamin WILLIAMS had a son in the age range that would fit my Martin. By the 1850 census Martin was married. In that census Benjamin was listed with his wife Sarah and sons Giles and Daniel. Benjamin is 65 years old which corresponds with a posting about a Benjamin WILLIAMS being born in Kelloggsville in 1786. Sarah had a brother Martin PURDY. I believe this Martin married a Lydia Elizabeth DECKER b. 1810 possibly Orange Co. NY. There was another Benjamin WILLIAMS who had a son Darin or Duren b. 1830 who named a son Martin P. WILLIAMS. If anyone has any information that would link my Martin to Benjamin and Sarah PURDY WILLIAMS I would be very grateful. If anyone could tell me where to find a possible will for Benjamin that would be a great help as well.
