Please look up in the Huron County Cemetery Inscriptions book, including name of cemeteries. Pg. 496 - surname NOLAN-- 'Father', 'Mother', John J., M. (Mrs), Mary, Michael, and Thomas. Pg. 875 surname NOLAN-- Anna, Patrick, Patrick, III, and William. I am hoping to find information that links an Elizabeth NOLAN family to my Thomas Henry POLING family. [Thomas b. 19 Jan 1846 in Berlin Heights, Huron, OH; married ca. 1866 in OH.] [1850 census has my POLING family living in Townsend Twp., Huron, OH]. It would certainly be wonderful if someone else out there is researching these families.

I wonder if there are descendants, or any connections/ties to the LEPLEY family who immigrated from Germany (1753) to Bedford Co, PA (now Somerset Co) and into Huron Co and Knox Co, OH (ca. 1806)? I have an extensive listing of LEPLEY's who various lines of my family are connected with. I have a number of LEPLEY's who I would like to connect with their proper lineage. I have some missing LEPLEY's that I would like to find.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - Here are some Federal census references to a Thomas DABBS which might relate to your Thomas A. DABBS and family. They're taken from Ancestry.com. 1.1850, 1860 census- not located. 2. 1870 Census. Home in 1870- Wateree, Kershaw, SC Image. I also checked census records for an Adolphus DABBS (son of Archibald and brother to Thomas in item 1. above), and found- 6. 1920 Census. Home in 1920- Center Township, Richland, SC. Image. Read name (DABBS), age, birthplace, place of birth of father, place of birth of mother- Adolphus, head, 47, SC, SC, SC. Read name (DABBS), age, birthplace- Adolphus, inmate, 78, SC. Some inconsistencies I noted (which I believe you are aware of)- a. Archibald in item 1 gives his birthplace as NC, but Thomas (Item 3) and (item 5) gives his father's birthplace as SC and OH respectively. b. The wife of Thomas (item 3) is listed as Rachel. c. The estimated birth years of Archibald, based on his age at time of census in items 1, 6, and 7, vary a fair bit.

Surnames: CHAPMAN, SAWYER
Researcher: Gloria Bauer Ishida

Date posted: Thursday, November 25, 2004

After having been in England this fall and pulling photos and information together, I am back to the CHAPMAN/SAWYER connection. Apologies for a typo about Caroline CHAPMAN - she would have been born in 1810 (not 1800); but nevertheless information thus far doesn't connect. First of all, to correct familysearch info here (I was in contact with the person- a shirt tail relative - for a couple of mails but then no reply, so the info stands as is on the LDS site- I have not yet got the software program which allows input into LDS)-- 7. Familysearch.com. Family Group Record. Husband's Name- William SAWYER, Born 29 Dec 1811, Essex, Kent, England. Correction-- William was born in Ninfield, East Sussex, England; (His father, Stephen was born in Shorne, Kent). Died 8 Feb 1868, Lyme Twp, Huron, Oh. This would have been 59 years of age, when his youngest child, Angeline, was four years old (she, at age 16, is listed as living with with her brother, William (my great-grandfather), as is her sister, Annetta. There is another older sister, Sarah, who is also not listed in LDS. She went to California and married a prominent person, and Sarah followed her much later. Wife's Name- Caroline CHAPMAN, Born 1825, OH. Married 1 Jan 1842, Bellevue, Huron, OH. Father, Nathaniel CHAPMAN. Again in the LDS site, Caroline SAWYER, born February,1817, is listed as the second wife of Cornelius MANNING GATES (born 1819 in Maumee), married when? He married his first wife, evidently, in 1852. Cornelius died in Greenfield Township, and was buried in Lyme Grange Cemetery, January 1900. The article I have on Caroline SAWYER from the Bellevue Gazette is dated February 28, and writes at length of her 97th birthday, and as the first white child born in Bellevue. This would put her birth year, 1810. This Caroline was the one referred to as one of our SAWYERs. I have four photos of her (certainly all the same woman although different ages), one marked by my great aunt's grandmother. Two of her are of a very, very old woman; if was always told to me she lived to be almost 100. According to the article, she is living on Castalia Street, in her own suite of rooms, with a Mr. and Mrs. Pavin sharing the same structure. "Grandma SAWYER" as noted she was always called, made rag rugs, and gave them to friends. Many people evidently had then. Oh, I would love to have one. Now, if she married Cornelius, why did she revert back to the SAWYER name? According to cemetery records, William's wife is not listed as being buried with him; he is in his parent's plot (Stephen and Dorothy). There is a Caroline buried with Cornelius. I have learned not to accept LDS information as always correct, unless it comes from an original source. And I am sure some of the information about the family is assumption. 'But' and 'and', I am truly perplexed. Are there two Caroline CHAPMANs who married SAWYERs (although I can't figure that out at all)? As far as I know the Stephen SAWYERs were the first SAWYERs in the area. Is the census report of Caroline, age 25 in 1850, wrong? Was there a Caroline SAWYER (born SAWYER) from another county who married Gates? Could an 1810 Caroline be the daughter of Frederick and not Nathaniel as I thought? Question (finally)-- Where can I find baptismal records; marriage records for Huron County? Does Trinity still have its old records? What is the oldest church in Huron (or Erie) County? Where would one have been baptized in 1810? One, or the other, Caroline was born in Groton Township. Nothing in obits form Hayes sheds any light. Old Caroline is listed but it's the 97 birthday article they have. You'd never know I was raised in Clyde, with the close family in Bellevue. But I wasn't into genealogy as a kid, just heard some stories. Sorry for this long communication. If anyone can give me some more clues, I'd appreciate it.

Lyman SPARKS m Lovisa BAKER 1857. According to his obituary, Lyman SPARKS was born 11 May 1832 in Chautauqua County, New York, and moved to Huron County, Ohio, with his family at age one and a half. He married 1 November 1857 in Huron County Lovisa BAKER. In September 1883 they moved to Jackson County, Michigan, where he died 11 November 1899. He and his family were in Columbia, Williams County, Ohio at the 1880 census. I'm wondering whether he is related to Lois B. SPARKS (1853-1946) who married 1876 in Huron County Lyman VAN SCOY (1850-1920).

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I found the marriage of Lois SPARKS to Lyman VANSCOY in our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications. I couldn't find the marriage of a Lovisa E. BAKER to a Lyman E. SPARKS in this same publication, but I did find the marriage of a Louvisa E. BAKER to a Simon C. SPARKS close in time to the date given in the obit (1 Nov 1857) for the marriage of Lovisa E. BAKER and Lyman E.SPARKS. These were the only references I could locate in our Huron County, Ohio publications to either a Lyman E. SPARKS or a Simon C. SPARKS. Details- Lois BAKER m. Lyman VANSCOY 4 Sep 1876. Book 2, Page 500. Louvisa E. BAKER m. Simon C. SPARKS 1 Dec 1857. Book 1, Page 125. If this is the same Lo(u)visa E. BAKER in both cases, and both marriages are valid, Lo(u)visa E. BAKER must have been overwhelmed with marriage plans in the Nov-Dec 1857 time period.

Three VAN SCOY men of the same generation, my great3-grandfather Abraham and his first cousins, brothers of each other, Cornelius and James, came to Huron County, Ohio, in the 19th century. I have some information about Cornelius and James and famlies, primarily from census records and a published genealogy of the VAN SCHAICK family. Lyman VAN SCOY whom I mentioned in my earlier post about his wife Lois SPARKS, Lyman SPARKS, and Lou/visa BAKER is a son of Cornelius VAN SCOY. Ken Shute Look Up Results - So far I've been unable to pin down the parents of Nathan BAKER, but I did find the father of Eliza MOFFITT who married Nathan BAKER. His name is John MOFFITT. A sister of Eliza's is Maria MOFFITT who married George BAKER, suggesting that George BAKER is related to Nathan BAKER, possibly a brother. (Also see paragraphs below.) W.W. Williams, in his History of the Fire Lands, mentions Spencer BAKER, along with brother William BAKER, and families, came to Fairfield Twp, Huron County, OH from Onondago County, NY in 1819. These BAKERs were followed to Huron County, OH during the next several years by five other brothers of Spencer's, namely: Sampson, George (same George BAKER who married Maria MOFFITT?), Sylvester, Jefferson J., and Abijab. Nathan BAKER is not mentioned specifically as another brother to Spencer, but he is named as one of the voters, along with William BAKER, George BAKER, and Spencer BAKER, who took part in the election of Officers for Fairfield Twp when it was organized in 1823. One of the officers elected was Spencer BAKER, as trustee and constable. W.W. Williams also wrote that Philip MOFFITT, a native of CT, but who resided in Onondago County (NY) for several years, also came early to Fairfield Twp, Huron County, OH in 1819 with his wife Hannah BAKER. They lived in Fairfield Twp for 15 years then moved to Crawford County, OH. I find the name Nathan BAKER also listed in the Census records for Fairfield Twp, Fairfield Co., CT in the years 1800, 1810 and 1820. Appearing on the same image page with Nathan BAKER in the census years 1800 and 1820 is the name Ebenezer BAKER. In the 1820 census page, "Ebenezer BAKER" appears immediately below that of "Nathan BAKER." There may be some doubt, however, as to whether this Nathan BAKER is the same as yours. If your Nathan BAKER was born 1787, he would have been about 33 years old in the 1820 census, But this census, which shows only tallies of family members according to age bracket, shows no tally for a male that would fall into the age 26-45 year old category. For the male section of age categories for Nathan, there is only one tally for ages under 10, and one tally for ages over 45. It was in a descendancy chart for a John MOFFITT, posted by Audrey M. Rogers Feb. 23, 2000 on genforum.genealogy.com, that I found references to your BAKER tie-in. (The email address given at that time for Audrey was [email protected].). The beginning of the descendancy chart includes the following: "Subject: John MOFFITT of Marcellus, Onondago, NY Generation No. 1. 1. John MOFFITT .................... Children of John MOFFITT are: i. Hosea MOFFITT ii. Eber MOFFITT iii Eleazer MOFFITT iv. Abigail MOFFITT, m. Eliphalet W. DAY v. Eliza MOFFITTT, m. Nathan BAKER vi. Maria MOFFITT, m. George BAKER vii. Philip MOFFITT viii. Ishmael MOFFITT, wife Lydia xi. John Junior MOFFITT Generation No. 2, " etc. At the end of the descendancy chart there appears the following: "The "Will of John MOFFITT" states that the following names are living in North Fairfield, Huron Co., Ohio in 1829. Eliza MOFFITT, m. Nathan BAKER Maria MOFFITT, m. George BAKER Philip MOFFITT. Some of the above names lived in Skaneateles and are buried in the Benson Road Cemetery located about 6 miles south of the Village of Skaneateles, Onondago, New York."

I believe this is probably the same Johann Valentine and Elizabeth SUNKEL KLAG who are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk, Ohio. The IGI records show a Katherine KLAG who married Henry KOHLMER 4/18/1855 in Huron County Ohio. I believe this is the same John Henry age 51 and Kate age 46 KOHLMEYER who show up along with their family in the 1880 federal census in Norwalk, Huron County Ohio. If this Katherine KLAG wife of Henry KOHLMER (John Henry KOHLMEYERE?) is not the same as the Catherine KLAG who arrived in New York in 1856 she must be a niece or close family member of Johann Valentine KLAG. There appear to be other KLAG family members who migrated to Toledo or Oregon, Lucas County, Ohio.

Edward Lafayette (Lafe) DAVIS of PA/OH 1872 - 1923. I guess it's close enough to the new year to submit my annual query, in the hope that someone new has joined the list and will be able to help. I'm looking for any information that would help identify the parents of my grandfather, Edward Lafayette (Lafe) DAVIS. According to his death certificate (information provided by my grandmother), he was born in Blanket Hill, OH on March 9, 1872 and his parents were Albert DAVIS and May SHELL, both born in PA. Lafe married Harriet SNYDER in New Haven Township, Huron County, OH on October 14, 1896 and died there on September 22, 1923. However, the 1900 census states that Lafe was born in PA, and I can find no record of there ever having been a Blanket Hill, OH, but there is a Blanket Hill in Armstrong County, PA. Also, according to a distant cousin, who published a history of the RUBINS family in 1973, "Edward's parents died young and he was raised by foster parents." I could not find an Albert DAVIS with a wife named Mary and a son named Edward or Lafayette in the 1880 census soundex for PA. But, I did find an Albert DAVIS with a wife named Sarah and a son named Lafayette, all from PA, in the 1880 census soundex for OH. They lived in Plymouth Township, Richland County, OH, which is only 3 miles from New Haven. They reported that Lafayette was nine, but Edward Lafayette should only have been eight when the census was taken. They also had six children younger than Lafayette, but my mother said she never heard of any siblings of Edward Lafayette. The members of this family from Plymouth were: Albert, 39, b. PA; Sarah, 29, b.PA; Lafayette, 9, b. PA; Laura, 7, b. PA; Lurenza, 5, b. PA; Louisa, 4, b. OH; Harry G., 3, b. OH; Bertha, 1, b. OH; and a son, 2 mo., b. OH. I would greatly appreciate any information that would help confirm or refute the possible connection of Edward Lafayette to the Albert DAVIS of Plymouth or could throw some light on the identity of his parents.
