Caroline CHAPMAN SAWYER was my great-great grandmother. I obtained her 97th birthday information from the Hayes Center (they had it listed under obituaries!). There is no obituary for her which would have been helpful. I need more information about the CHAPMANs. Her father was Nathaniel (do not know her mother's name) and she had a sister, Angeline and maybe a brother Nathaniel. Caroline was the first white child to be born in Bellevue (1800). I have seen somewhere that her father trekked from Connecticut with his brother, who was scalped on the way (I think this was from a volume in the Bellevue library. As I will be going to England, September 23, I really would like to trace Nathaniel back to Connecticut and possible the region in England from where the family originated.

Jessie Deith Look Up Resutls-- In a book titled "Genealogical and Family History of the State of Connecticut: A Record of the Achievements of her People in Making of a Commonwealth and the Founding of a Nation " Vol 3, there is mention of CHAPMANs who might or might not connect to your family. Robert CHAPMAN came from Hull, England to Boston Aug 1635 and then on to Saybrook, Conn. in Nov. He had a son Nathaniel born Feb 1658, who married Mary Collins. They had 8 children. One of the 8 was another Nathaniel CHAPMAN b. 1683 in Saybrook. He married Elizabeth Spencer Aug 1709 . They had 2 children Ichabod b. Oct 1710, and another Nathaniel Oct 1714. Hope someday you can tie into this.

Apparently this was bare ground covered by weeds and brush. The trio pled not guilty, but were found guilty. and ordered to pay $25 and court costs. Thanks to everyone who has sent me information about my CHAPMAN query, both privately and on this site. A lot of interesting material. I have had to come to the conclusion that either there were two Nathaniel CHAPMANs (and there are many CHAPMANs in Huron County) or that, if only one, he fathered my great-great grandmother when he was seventeen, and later had a second marriage producing younger children. I do believe Nathaniel and Frederick brothers were father and uncle to Caroline. But still some mystery! Angeline and Caroline were most probably sisters or half sisters, as one of my my great-grandfather's sisters was named Angeline. She and an older sister, Sarah, married and settled in California. I have wonderful photos of the early SAWYERs from on-line connecting with newly found third cousins once removed in South Carolina and a distant shirt-tail relative in California. Other great connections were made in England. The South Carolina cousin just went through Bellevue and found the Stephen SAWYER house still in Lyme Township! I never knew when I grew up in the area (probably wasn't curious either). I don't think it necessary to caution, but will anyway, about the LDS site. Information not coming from official records, should not be taken as absolute fact. Stephen SAWYER was born in Kent, his first five children were born in Bexhill on Sea, Sussex, and his wife was from Ninfield and Bexhill. Still the LDS site a lot. No Nathaniel and Frederick who could possibly be mine are either listed for Connecticut or New York.

In the files of the VAN SCOY-KNAPP reunion is a letter dated August 9, 1916, from Cora Fullerton. The envelope has a preprinted return address of - Fullerton & Fish Milliners, Norwallk, Ohio. Cora May (KINGLSEY) FULLERTON (born 1873) was the wife of Sibley FULLERTON and the daughter of John KINGSLEY (born about 1845) and his wife Ida E. FISH (1852-1915). At the time of the 1920 census she was apparently living in Cleveland: 1920, Ohio, Cuyahoga County, Cleveland, p. 5A, 89?-69. (Her maternal grandmother was Lidda Ann VAN SCOY, and I know quite a bit about her ancestry in that line.)
