In searching my MILL/MILLS family who moved abt 1834 from Northampton Co., PA to New Haven, Huron Co., OH, I have found a Benjamin MILL whom I believe is a member of this family but I cannot connect him other than the fact that he was in Huron Co., Clarksfield Twp in 1840 when my Johann Heinrich MILL (Henry MILLS) was in New Haven Twp in the same year. Would like to hear from anybody who knows anything about Benjamin.

I'm trying to locate Israel STALEY in the 1840 Federal Census. An index says he should be on Page 100 of Milton Township, Richland County, which I believe Huron was part of before it became Huron. I know Israel and family were in Clarksfield Township on the 1850 Huron County Federal Census but haven't been able to find him in the 1840 census where the index listed him. If someone has the census, I'd sure appreciate a look up.

Here's the little I know on Israel STALEY, born about 1825/26 PA. Married Louisiana (aka Lucy Ann) HELTMAN in Ashland on 3 June, 1827. Children born to this marriage- Joseph, b. 6 Dec 1849; Almyra b. 1851/52; Mary Ann b. 24 Feb 1856; Jeremiah Heltman b. April 1859 (all born in Ashland OH). According to Jeremiah's biography, his father Israel was a "well respected businessman in Ashland, Ohio for many years." I suspect Israel's father MAY have been Joseph as his first born son was so named, BUT Lucy's father was Joseph HELTMAN so they may not have followed "usual" naming patterns! Lucy's parents (Joseph and Catherine HELTMAN) lived in Milton Township for many years. When Lucy died 18 May 1868 she was buried in the Ashland City Cemetery in a lot her parents owned and Israel was NOT mentioned in her obit; also all four of their children were living in the HELTMAN household in the 1870 Federal Census and I have found no sign of Israel anywhere after the 1860 Ohio census!. That is all I know of him and he is as far back as we've ever gotten on the STALEY line! If you have any suggestions or sources you would check, I'll be more than grateful.

Ken Shute Look Up Results-- I could find no earlier record of Israel STALEY and family than what you describe, but I did find an Israel STALEY/STEALEY and family in the 1870 and 1880 Federal censuses that might match your Israel STALEY. If he is your Israel STALEY, then it would seem that he remarried a Phebe J. __ (after the death of Lucy Ann STALEY on 18 May 1868). Details- 1. 1870 Federal Census (Ancestry.com). Name- Israel STALEY. Age in 1870- 41. Estimated birth year- 1828. Home in 1870- Joliet, Will County, IL. Occupation- Physician. Birthplace- PA. Wife's name- Phebe J.. Age in 1870- 36. Estimated birth year- 1834. Occupation- Keeping House. 2. 1880 Federal Census (FamilySearch, and Ancestry.com). Read name, relation, age, birthplace, occupation, father's birthplace, mother's birthplace- Israel STEALEY, self, 54, PA, pedler, PA, PA (estimated birth year is 1826). Phebe STEALEY, wife, 50, NY, keeping house, NY, NY. James Ford, son, 30, NY, at home, NY, NY. Princes Ford, daughter, 24, OH, at home, NY, NY. Cora Shreffler, daughter, 6, IL, at school, NY, NY. The home of this STEALEY family in 1880 was Morris, Grundy County, IL. This Israel STEALEY (presumed to be the same as Israel STALEY in the 1870 Census) seems to match your Israel STALEY in terms of birth year and place of birth. If true, it would indicate that both his parents were also born in PA. Perhaps the children here, with the different surnames, are childen of Phebe's from a previous marriage. In comparing the 1870 Israel STALEY with the 1880 Israel STEALEY, the estimated birth year for the 1870 Israel STALEY is a bit off, and the occupation is different (physician vs. pedler), but the birth place is the same (PA).for both. In both 1870 and 1880, the wife's name is given as "Phebe (J.)." Also, from a map. I see Joliet, Will County, IL (residence in 1870) is fairly close to Morris, Grundy County, IL (residence in 1880). I could find no record of an Israel or Phebe STALEY/STEALEY in the 1890 Census. Your additional details on your STALEY family were very helpful in checking the various possibilities.

I am looking for information about August A. ZELLER. He was born in Ridgefield Township, Huron Co. on March 12, 1841. I have come to a brick wall trying to find out who his parents were. August's death certificate listed his father as John ZELLER but this is not enough to go on to find out about them. Does anyone know if there are any records from that time that might have listed this family (churches, schools, directories)? I have found nothing on the census records. They must have lived in the area for some time because he married Dorothy BAHR in Monroeville, Ohio in October, 1864. I have no idea what kind of work his father did.

Ken Shute Look Up Results-- In our Huron County,Ohio publications I found only two references to August ZELLER. Our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, published by Scheuer Publications, shows the marriage record for August A. ZELLER as follows- August A. ZELLER m. Dorothy BAHR 23 Oct 1864, Book 1, Page 448. Our Huron County Probate Court Naturalization Records Index, 1859-1903, published by HCC/OGS, 2003 lists the following- August ZELLER Germany 1902 FP4/437. The information was compiled by Henry R. Timman in 2001, when he was Chief Deputy Clerk in the Probate Court Office. There are no column headings for this list. My assumption is that they are name, country of birth, year of naturalization action, and comments "FP4" is stated as meaning "First Papers 1886-1906." I assume the "437" could be a page number. If "Germany" actually means country of birth, then this would be at odds with your August's birthplace as Ridgefield Township, Huron County, Ohio. Further, If August A. ZELLER was born in this country, I believe he would gain automatic citizenship and have no need to apply for citizenship. It would seem that this August ZELLER is not the same person as your August A. ZELLER. I found more on the internet about August A. ZELLER regarding his family, but they match what you have already reported. One source, Ancestry.com's Family Trees, has the following record- August A. ZELLER, b. 12 Aiug 1841, Ridgefield Township, Huron County, Ohio. Father- John ZELLER. Spouse- Dorothy BAHR. I couldn't find anything more on August's parentage.

I need help finding some proof that the parents of Julia BERRY (b. abt. 1814, who married Otis G. CARTER on May 13, 1835 in Fredonia, Chautauqua County, New York) were Samuel BERRY and Esther MORTON BERRY. Julia had a brother, Samuel Homer BERRY, who was a dentist in Norwalk, and died there in 1872 at age 59. His wife was Mahetabel A. BERRY, who died in Norwalk in 1859. The elder BERRYs lived in Fredonia, and Samuel died there in 1842. Esther came to live with her daughter in Norwalk and died there in 1844. At the same time, I'm also looking for the names the parents of Otis G. CARTER, who was born in Becket, Berkshire County, MA, in 1811. The census isn't much help, and birth, marriage and death certificates either are not available or don't show the information I'm looking for. I know they were active in the Baptist Church. Does that Church typically keep records of their members that might include parents names? Would there be Cemetery or Funeral Home information that would show that information? There are several articles about Otis G. CARTER in "The Firelands Pioneer", (none name his parents or the parents of Julia) but I am not sure whether there are any about the BERRY family. Does anyone have access to those books? Is there somewhere else I should be looking? I'm stumped. Any help or ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated.
