I'm looking for information that would help identify the parents of my grandfather, Edward Lafayette (Lafe) DAVIS. According to his death certificate (information provided by my grandmother), he was born in Blanket Hill, OH on March 9, 1872 and his parents were Albert DAVIS and Mary SHELL, both born in PA. However, for the 1900 census, Lafe stated that he also was born in PA. I have not been able to locate a Blanket Hill in OH, but there is such a place in Armstrong County, PA. Lafe married Harriet SNYDER in New Haven Twp., Huron County, OH on October 14, 1896 and he died there on September 22, 1923. According to a distant cousin, who published a history of the RUBINS family in 1973, "Edward's parents died young and he was raised by foster parents." I don't know where she got that information, but Lafe's daughter and one son was still living then, so maybe one of them supplied it. I could not find an Albert DAVIS with a wife named Mary and a son named Edward or Lafayette in the 1880 census soundex for PA, but did find an Albert DAVIS with a wife named Sarah and a son named Lafayette, all from PA, in the 1880 census soundex for OH. They lived in Plymouth Twp., Richland County, which is only 3 miles from New Haven. They reported that Lafayette was nine, but Lafe should only have been eight when the census was taken. They also had six children younger than Lafayette, but my mother said she never heard anything about Lafe having any siblings. The members of this family from Plymouth were- Albert, 39, b. PA; Sarah, 29, b. PA; Lafayette, 9, b. PA; Laura, 7, b. PA; Lurenza, 5, b. PA; Louisa, 4, b. OH; Harry G., 3, b. OH; Bertha, 1, b. OH; and a son, 2 mo., b. OH. I have not been able to locate this family after 1880. I would greatly appreciate any information that would help confirm or refute the possible connection of Lafe to the Albert DAVIS of Plymouth or could throw some light on the identity of Lafe's parents.

There appears to be two different Nathan KEITHs--one who died about 1816, the other who married a Fidelia M. POND 17 April 1845. Details- 1. Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications. Nathan KEITH m. Fidelia M. POND 17 April 1845, old book 2, page 175. Charles KIETH (sic) m. Page 224 in Chapter on Greenfield Township. Under heading of "Mills"- "Nathan KEITH, who moved into Bronson with Judge Southgate and family in 1816, was injured in this mill (Carkhuff's mill) during its erection, which caused his death a short time after." Page 229. Mentions Caleb KEITH, Carlos KEITH, Joshua Freeman and Jonathon Fish accompanied Robert S. Southgate of Barand , Vermont, to Ohio in the winter of 1815. Carlos KEITH married, April 22, 1824, Elvira POND, daughter of Munson POND who moved into Peru from Knox County the year previous. Ray Tompkins Look Up Results - To the best of my knowledge and research, thus far, none of my TOMPKINS family lived in Ohio. Having said that, I cannot be sure what route my Daniel "D" TOMPKINS took when he came to California from Michigan. He arrived in California about 1852. My relationship with Huron County is through the Epenetus and Cyrenius STARR family and their daughter, Alvria Mercy STARR. Alvira (18 years old), with her brother Matthew (with his wife and child(ren)) and sister Philena (15 years old) came to California around 1860. Daniel and Alvira were married in 1861 in Paskenta, Tehama County, California. Paskenta was a very small place (still is) and the lure of farm land drew people there. I don't know enough about Daniel except to say he was born on 26 Feb 1829 in New York (Father Gideon, Mother Maria), raised in Michigan (I can find no absolute proof this family was there), and died on 16 Nov 1886 in Lorenzo, Santa Cruz Co, California. Birth, Father's name Gideon, marriage, and death according to the family Bible. The reference to Michigan was in an Obituary column in the local M. E. Church. And, according to my cousin, there was never a mention of siblings.

My thanks to Ken Shute. I have been looking for the right Nathan KEITH for a long time and with his additional clues it is narrowed down, perhaps as much as it will ever be. In Huron co I have a Della Jane LYON who was born to David LYON (1822 to 1900) and his wife Eunice CARPENTER. Eunice was born to Rev. Orson L. CARPENTER and his wife Ester (Esther) KEITH. She was born in 1813 in Coventry, New Hampshire coming to Ohio with her parents as a child. My only clue to her parents that I have is a list of heads of households in the town papers in 1811. The only KEITH mentioned is a Nathan. Now thanks to Ken I have some other family members who accompanied them and with that I found a matching family in "The KEITH Book" by Larry KEITH. I'm still wondering about the Rosetta KEITH that I've seen mentioned and wonder if there is a connection.

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- From what I found, it appears that the Huron County Reuben STOTTS, b. 1806, is a different person than the Reuben STOTTS who married Rachel CLARK and had a son named William STOTTS. The Huron County Reuben was born 1806, married a Martha FISHER in 1865, and was still married to her in 1880 according to the Federal census for Ripley Twp, Huron County, of that year. I found no record of any other marriage of this Reuben, either before or after 1865. His family in 1880 consisted of Martha, age 33; a daughter Ella, age 18; and a son Reuben, age 6. I could find no death date for Martha. The Reuben STOTTS who married Rachel CLARK was born about 1829. Rachel CLARK was born in 1831 in Allegheny County, MD, died Oct 1870, and was buried in Tedrow Cemetery, Dover Twp, Fulton County, OH. They had one son named William W. STOTTS born 1845 in Wauseon, Fulton County, OH. William was listed as having four wives (sequentially, not concurrently). Apart from this Reuben being born about 23 years after the Huron County Reuben, his wife Rachel died in 1870, five years after Martha FISHER married the Huron County Reuben. Details- 1. Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, published by Scheuer Publications. Reuben STOTTS m. Martha FISHER 18 Sep 1865, Book 1, Page 486. 2. Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions. Reuben STOTTS appears in the Federal Censuses for Ripley Twp, Huron County, OH in the years 1860 through 1880. This Reuben STOTTS thing is very difficult! 1. I have found no marriage record whatsoever for Reuben and Rachel. I would love to but I cannot. Rachel CLARK was 13 when William (my great grandfather) was conceived and 14 when he was born. I can find no marriage for her other than one to Nathaniel RIDDLE a mere 2 years after the baby William was born. I never saw him listed as a STOTTS on any census records. He was listed on the 1850 census and onward until adulthood as a RIDDLE if I am remembering correctly. The only marriage listed in the family Bible for her is the one to Nathaniel RIDDLE. 2. I cannot find one single reference anywhere to substantiate a birth for any Reuben in 1829. My own aunt was the one that submitted the work to the LDS Family Group Record. She admits she had no documentation at all! She guessed and based it on the birth of Rachel. Not very accurate. She admits the same thing for the place of birth. She just "figured" that he would have been born in the same place and time as Rachel. 3. I can find no earlier marriage for Reuben STOTTS before Martha FISHER. NONE! He was 59 years old when he married her. What was he doing those years previous to that? He traveled in various counties around Ohio and bought up properties. I have found a tax record in Williams County (I believe the same Reuben) right next to Fulton County. It looks to be a straight line of about 15-20 miles along the railroad to the CLARK family farm. It is easy to speculate at the point. He also bought land in Hancock county and possible in LaPorte County, Indiana where Rachel's uncles bought. At least, some Reuben did. 4. I have seen some of the pictures of the STOTTS people in Huron County or from there. There is a striking resemblance between a man named Abraham STOTTS and my grandfather Lee STOTTS the son of William born to Rachel and Reuben. 5. There are more than a few physical things that need to be considered. Not the least of which is the diabetes that was a contributing factor in Reuben of Huron County and my William and my own grandfather (not dead yet but suffering with it nonetheless). I am ok if you think the following is silly. They were circus performers right. Ella, the daughter of Reuben was very limber and lithe. Runs in the family very strongly. I can still at the age of 47 do things I could do as a cheerleader in school. My sister too is like a ragdoll. Not big people it seems. I am 5'. William was 5'6 according to his military records. He had auburn hair and hazel eyes. My dad has both. My dad is 5'8 or so. 6. Personality traits. Oh yes, I have looked into this as well. I am going to say some things I would not want repeated anywhere. My STOTTS people are mean. My grandpa was extremely abusive and could not control his anger. I have strong and unpleasant memories of cousins and others in the family being literally beaten by him. No thought for anything but what he thought he needed to do. That family has a real problem with uncontrollable anger and bipolar or manic problems. Very interesting. I asked a psychologist in the family (1st cousin) if there was any merit to building a family profile on such emotional and psychological things and was told that many of these problems are indeed familial and to keep researching it to see if I can find a solid paper-type link. I am going for it. Oh, by the way, he knew nothing of these things I found, only about our own grandfather. I found a story about a STOTTS guy who was institutionalized "not because he was insane,! but for his inability to control his temper". This man was from Huron County and ended up institutionalized in FT. Wayne, Indiana.... One STOTTS man through his baby up against a wall because he would not eat. One abused his son so badly that the boy hung himself... did not die but was never the same again. Just stuff like that from the fringes of the STOTTS family in Huron County. Not to mention how Reuben STOTTS Junior took the farm away from his renters just because he wanted to come back.... Unfair. Probably enough of that. Ok, just one more thing... Reuben STOTTS parents were divorced. That was Jacob STOTTS and Matilda CLARRY. She claimed (I was told anyway) that he beat her and slept around. Supposedly that is in the divorce papers. I have never read them, but the info was unsolicited and volunteered. 7. Every other Reuben I found was so much older than her that is was disgusting or so much younger that it was impossible. You are right, this guy was what? 35 years older than our Rachel? Seduction? Rape? Stupidity? Who knows? The more I read and look at their pix, the more convinced I become. It is difficult be cause there seems to be no paper trail that I can really sink my teeth in. Every thing I have is circumstantial. Everything thusfar that is. Because of computer problems, I have lost many of the letters that told me these stories. Not sure if I copied them off or not before I lost them. Do you know if there are any pix of Reuben Jr, the circus performer? I would love to compare them to my grandfather. If my hypothesis is true, they would be half brothers. I would love to see if there is a resemblance...

However, from the census, he was from Connecticut. So far I've not found his parents. Orson is buried in "Christian Church Cemetery" Ripley, Ohio. I'm trying to find the church that might have the old records of this church, in the hopes the marriage records might list the parents. So far there has been no reply. If you live close-by you might persue this avenue in person and get better results (I'm in Illinois). I've asked my son to check for CARPENTERs in my grandmother's autograph book. Asa CARPENTER has with him one son under 5, himself - between 20 and 30, one male between 70 and 80, females- one under 5, one between 20 and 30, and one between 60 and 70. Orson and his new wife have set up their own home on a later page. There is another CARPENTER listed in Faifield that I wonder might be another brother. He is Harry CARPENTER. He also is in the same age bracket and has a young family.

I have a notation in my notes that Asa CARPENTER is buried in the "Houstotter Cemetery" in Ripley Twp. I am not sure where this came from. Could this help locate the actual church?

I am researching Philip BEAL, his wife Eva SMITH BEAL, and their oldest daughter, Eva BEAL DECKER, spouse of Christopher DECKER. She was born in 1800 in Germany and died April 8, 1913. I understand she is buried in Vermillion. Is she listed in the cemetery book? I would like to know the place in Germany where she was born. Her father's citizenship just says Prussia and her mother's just Germany. I know they came to the US in 1831 and they bought land in Lorain County in 1832.

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- There is no Eva or Christopher DECKER listed in the index to the Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book. (You can see the names of DECKERs listed in the index to this Cemetery Inscriptions book by going to the web site for HCC/OGS-- sites.rootsweb.com/~ohhuron--, then clicking on "Archives', then clicking "Cemeteries", and finally clicking on the category "C-D" and scrolling to the surname DECKER.) You cite the burial place of Eva as "Vermillion." Actually, this is a township in Erie County, not Huron County, Ohio. I have only two publications dealing with Erie county. One is the History of the Firelands, Comprising Huron and Erie Counties, Ohio, by W. W. Williams, 1879. The other is the Atlas & Directory of Erie County, Ohio, 1896. The former has no reference to Christopher or Eva Decker. The latter lists the following DECKERs who appear to relate to your forebears- Property Owners- C. The only church in Ripley that I am aware of is the Ripley Congregational Church with the Edwards Grove Cemetery. A sister, Ida Sclesta TILTON, of my grandmother, Lucy Belle TILTON, married a William Carpenter, 12/9/1903. I'm wondering if he is a descendent of ASA or ORBON CARPENTER. Does anyone know the answer to this question?

There is also an Albert CARPENTER (22) living with the TURNERS, and a Huldah CARPENTER with the BERRYS. In 1860 Leonard CARPENTER and family are listed in Fairfield. Perhaps if you trace these on out you will find your William. I'll watch for him.

Would it be possible to obtain a copy of an obit for Lucy Ann SEYDELL-SQUIRES-MAYNARD Died January 29, 1939 in Norwalk. The info is from the I.G.I. except for the last name MAYNARD. I think the MAYNARD part is correct and would like to prove it. Lucy SQUIRES and Ira MAYNARD were living in Greenwich in 1880. Both of their spouses died in 1882. The Huron Co. marriage index shows a Ira MAYNARD and Lucy SUIRES marrying in 1883. 99.9% sure but... In 1900 there is no female in the household of Ira MAYNARD. Only a 15 year old son named Leon.

I am looking for information on Minshall BROOKS and his wife Sarah who farmed 160 acres in New London Township, Huron County. They appear in the 1850 census. They had 10 or more children. Alzina BROOKS was 8 in 1850 and had a twin sister named Polly. Alzina is my great grandmother. She married Robert MCELROY in 1859 and no record of marriage exists in Indiana, so I think she maybe married near home. Other children were Samuel, Elizabeth, Catharine, John Aaron & Rhoda. I would absolutely love finding out I have relatives still in Huron County. My grandfather, Robert, enlisted in the Ohio 12th Battery in 1862 in Huron County. Hoping to hear from BROOKS' relatives,

Windfield Scott PURDY b 1827 or 1828 in Ohio. I think it was Huron County. He went by W. S. PURDY too. He married Abt. 1854 in Ohio to Julia (don't know her maiden name). First child was born Abt. 1855, named Harriet Eliza PURDY in Ohio, found him on the 1860 Illinois census under W. S. Purdy. This is my brick wall, I would dearly love to find some information on who his father, grandfather might have been, while my husbands two sisters are still here to rejoice with me. They are in their late seventies, and have been having health problems lately. This man has been the most allusive man on my tree, I found him by his middle name in the 1870 census in Illinois. I don't know if this man is running from the law or something. After 1870 census I can't find him, on any of the later census. Its like he disappeared in a puff of smoke. I would love to also know what his wife's maiden name was too. Are there any marriage records for the 1850s in Huron County.

I had a hunch that this was your Lucy, so I tried looking at the death certificate. The death certificate lists her date of birth as 9 Jan 1853 in Plymouth, Huron County, OH. Date of death as 30 Jan 1939 at 195 Benedict Ave, Norwalk, OH. Father's name is Samuel Seydell and the mother's maiden name is Susan Pettit. The informant was a Mrs. Childs at 195 Benedict Ave, Norwalk. I couldn't read the first name. I then checked the address of the informant in the directories and found Burton & Edith CHILDS living at 195 Benedict Ave. I went back to the obituary and this is the information from the obituaries- January 30, 1939 Page 6. Age 84, Former resident of Greenwich died at her daughter's home on Benedict Ave. Died today (Jan 30). Daughter is Mrs. B. U. CHILDS. Survived by daughter and son, Charles of Klamath Falls, Ore.
