Please look up the following marriages for me in your Huron County Marriages books- John LOVELAND + Calista CURTISS - about 1831 (probably not in OH). John SKINNER + Maria RUBINS - 1836. Ralph C. SNYDER + Anna SKINNER - 1873. Jesse SNYDER + Elizabeth LOVELAND - 1850. Question was asked if anyone was researching the DEWITT family of Huron County. There was a Margaret Dean DEWITT, who was the second wife of my 4th great-grandfather, Josiah CURTISS. I don't know where she was from, but have that they married in 1832 and that their daughter, Louisa, was born in New Haven Township in 1834. I have a little data about Louisa's husband and their children but none about Margaret's parents. I also have a Margaret DEWITT, who was the wife of Josiah and Mary (ROCKWELL) CURTISS' son, Reuben Rockwell CURTISS. I have that they were married March 06, 1839. I don't have the location of this marriage, but assume it was New Haven. I don't have any data about Margaret's parents or Reuben and Margaret's children. I have not actively researched these DEWITTs because they were not directly in my line.

I was wondering if your cemetery book would give the location of the cemetery where she is interned. I have looked at the Lorain County Cemetery's but could not find her. Thank You in advance if you have any information. PS Someone told me she was born in Hitcherhausen Rhyen Bayren. I haven't been able to find this city in Germany at the LDS library.

James DURY (1799-1848) m. Sally Ann VAN SCOY. The oldest daughter of Abraham VAN SCOY (1788-1848) and his wife Mary KNAPP (1795-1883) was (according to family reunion records) Sally Ann VAN SCOY. She was born 17 May 1812 in New York. She married James DURY. Their children (probably all born in Huron County, Ohio) were- (1) Mary E. DURY(1835-1893) married William SHELDON, lived in Hillsdale County, Michigan (2) John David DURY (1834-1902) married in Huron County, Ohio, Esther Ann JOHNS, lived in Williams County, Ohio, and later in East Gilead, Michigan. (3) James Leonder DURY (I don't know his wife's name but do have a list of three children of his.) (4) Ceylon Sherman DURY (1842- ) (I don't know his wife's name but according to a 1909 letter from one of their daughters she was living in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1909. She might be the Jane DURY, daughter-in-law of S. A. DURY in Greenwich Township, Huron County, Ohio, in the 1880 census) (5) Lidda Jane DURY (1846-1924) married (1) -- BUTLER, (2) in Huron County, Ohio, Alanson SHELDON, lived in Fitchville Township, Huron County, Ohio I think "Sally" Ann (VAN SCOY) DURY appears in the census records in Greenwich Township, Huron County, Ohio, as a head of household as follows- 1850, Sally DRURY, age 38 (living next door to daughter's future Sheldon in-laws). 1860, Sarah DRURY, age 47. 1870, Sarah A. DURY, age 56. 1880, S. A. DURY, age 66. I have not found her in the 1850 census. The Huron County cemetery inscriptions book shows in Nineveh Cemetery (Greenwich Township) a gravestone for "James DORY" next to that for Abraham and Mary VANSCOY. The date of death is 26 January 1848 at age 48 y 6 m 3 d. I suspect this is James DURY, husband of Sally/Sarah. I'm looking for others who are interested in this family.

Dave Lookup Results-- In a quick check of the Huron and Seneca Co. cemetery indices, I didn't find either Eva or Christopher listed. The village you want is probably Htschenhausen, which is in the Rhineland Platinate area where many Huron Co. Germans came from. The church books have been filmed by the LDS for the period 1800-1930, so you can look at them at your local LDS family history center. The surname BEAL occurs in the area and was usually spelled BIEL. 2/6/03

Earlier this week I posted some information about James DURY/DORY and his wife, Sally/Sarah VAN SCOY, and said I had been unable to find a record of their marriage. I think I may have found it in the published marriage records of Huron County, Ohio, (Scheuer Publications)- DAY, James; CANSCOY, Sally Ann; 9 Jul 1832; o1 160. This is consistent with Sally DRURY age 38 in the 1850 census and other census entries for her and with the Nineveh Cemetery inscription for James DORY who died in 1848 at age 48.) There are several marriages of DAY men given. Are there any DAY researchers on this list who recognize this as a DAY marriage rather than a DURY marriage? Has anyone run across a family name of CANSCOY? I really think this is a misreading or mistyping of VANSCOY.

Could someone who has a copy of volume 2 of the Scheur abstracts of the Huron County, Ohio, marriage record do a look up for me? I'm looking for the marriage of Abraham Brundage VAN SCOY and Matilda ? in the 1850's. (I do not know if they married in Huron County.) "VAN SCOY" may be alphabetized in several ways- VAN SCOY, VANSCOY, VANSCOY. According to family reunion records, Abraham Brundage VAN SCOY was born 7 April 1827. In 1850 he was age 23 living with his widowed mother Mary in Greenwich Township, Huron County, Ohio. In 1860 he (age 33) and Matilda (age 28, born in Pennsylvania) were living in Camden Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan. I have not yet found them in later years.

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- In checking our Huron County, Ohio publications, and the internet, I was unable to find the marriage of Abraham (III) Brundage VANSCOY and Matilda____. However, I did find one item of possible interest. The 1880 U.S. Census (from www.familysearch.org) shows the following family unit in Bedford, Westchester, New York. Read name, relation, age, birthplace, occupation, Father's birthplace, and Mother's birthplace- Abraham VANSCOY, self, 40, NY, D. Sherif (sic) & Constable, __, __. Marilda M. VANSCOY, wife, 40, NY, Keeps House, NY, NY. Clarance A. VANSCOY, son, 19, NY, Bar Tender, NY, NY. Henryetta A. MILLER, sister, 36, NY, Genral Work, NY, NY. The birth year (abt. 1840) would seem to rule out this Abraham as the Abraham (III) who was born 1827, but the wife's first name (Marilda) is remarkably similar to the name Matilda, wife of Abraham III, and the county of residence (Westchester, NY) is the same as that which I found for Abraham (II) VANSCOY. In the course of my research I found the names of Abraham II's siblings;the marriages of siblings Bishop K. and Hannah VANSCOY to BENNETTS; the family composition of Bishop K.'s in Huron County, Ohio in 1870, the marriages of two of Bishop K.'s children; the re-marriage of Bishop K.'s wife (Rachel A.) after his death; and the cemetery inscriptions for (1) Bishop K. & wife Rachel A. VANSCOY, and (2) Abraham (II) and wife Mary in Nineveh Cemetery, Greenwich Twp, Huron County, OH. I have a feeling that you already have most, if not all, of this information, but if not, let me know which ones you would like further details on, and I will be glad to send them to you.

In the 1980's, Melwood VAN SCOYOC published a 3 volume work "The Descendants of Cornelis Aertsen Van Schaick." It shows Abram VAN SCOY, born January 1839, North Salem, Westchester County, New York, married Marilda _____, born September 1840. This Abram was the son of Timothy VAN SCOY (b 1805 North Salem) and Hannah TOTTEN. This Timothy was the son of Abraham (I) and his second wife Hannah BOSTWICK. He shows a line of 4 Abraham VAN SCOYs. (I'll use Ken Shute's numbering, adding "0" to the name of the oldest.) Abraham VAN SCOY (0) 1731-1837 married in 1754 Priscilla WANSER 1734-1796. Lived in Westchester and Yates counties, New York. Children include Abraham (I) and Timothy 1772-1852. This Timothy also lived in both Westchester and Yates counties, New York. Two of his sons, Cornelius and James, moved to Huron County, Ohio. (I'm a bit skeptical of the dates for Abraham (0) because of the long length of life.) Abraham VAN SCOY (I) 1760-1844 married (1) in 1784 Abigail SLOKUM/SLOCUM at Church of Christ, Salem, Westchester County, New York (NYGBR v31 p239). Children with Abigail- Sally 1785-1805 and Abraham (II) 1788-1849. Abraham VAN SCOY (I) married (2) in 1797 Hannah BOSTWICK 1778-1851. Abraham and Hannah are buried in the Cat Ridge Baptist Cemetery, North Salem, Westchester County, New York. Children- John Bostwick, Lewis, Jonathan, Cornelius, Timothy, Sarah, Rebecca, Stephen, Abigail, Amaziah, and Isaac. Abraham Van Scoy (II) 1788-1849 married in 1811 Mary KNAPP 1795-1883. Both probably born in North Salem, Westchester County, New York. A biography of son G. W. in Baughman's 1901 Centennial Biographical History of Richland County Ohio says this couple moved from New York to Geauga County, Ohio, then to Erie County, Pennsylvania, and then to Huron County, Ohio. I have found an entry for Abraham VANSCOY and family in the 1830 census in Fairview Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania. The October 1838 school census of Greenwich Township Huron County, Ohio, shows Abraham with children between age 4 and 20 including George W. and Abram B. Abraham and Mary are buried in Nineveh Cemetery, Greenwich Township, Huron County, Ohio. Children include George Washington 1822-1903 and my great(2) grandfather, Abraham BRUNDAGE (III). Abraham BRUNDAGE VAN SCOY (III) 1827- Melwood VAN SCOYOC says Abraham BRUNDAGE VAN SCOY was born 7 April 1827 and married Matilda. In the 1850 census Mary VANSCOY age 55 is living in Greenwich Township, Huron County, Ohio, with George age 27, Abram age 23, Harriet age 20, Bishop age 17, "Helen" age 14, and Hannah age 11. The 1860 census of Camden Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan, page 135, shows A. B. VANSCOY age 33 born in Ohio with Matlida age 28 born in Pennsylvania. The 1870 census of Michigan is online at the Library of Michigan at http://envoy.libofmich.lib.mi.us/1870_census/. I have searched it but not found anyone who seems to match Abraham BRUNDAGE VAN SCOY born in 1827. Ken Shute found the most likely match in the 1880 census. It shows these men in the 1880 census- *Abraham VANSCOY age 75 with daughter Phebe J. age 31 in Pawling, Dutchess County, New York. *Abraham age 40 with wife Marilda age 40 and son Clarance A. age 18 in Bedford, Westchester County, New York. *A. VAN SCOY age 46, guard-brickmaker, Penitentiary, Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska. *Abram VAN SCOY age 25 born in Pennsylvania, laborer in household of Stephen A. Edward, Kingston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. *Abraham VAN SCOY age 24 born in New York, with wife Alice age 27 in Sandwich, De Kalb County, Illinois. Concerning the siblings of Abraham II- I've only found one full-sibling, Sally. However I've found a large number of half-siblings as listed above. Concerning the VANSCOY-BENNETT marriages- Bishop KNAPP, son of Abraham (II) married Rachel BENNETT, and his sister, Hannah, married John BENNETT. They were the daughter and son of John BENNETT and his wife, Sally Ann, of Richland County, Ohio. Concerning the children of Bishop KNAPP VAN SCOY and Rachel BENNETT- I know some of the descendants of their children, Judson L. VAN SCOy, Clara (VAN SCOY) WILLIS, and Ida (VAN SCOY) LINDSAY. I know of no children for possible daughters, Allie C. VAN SCOY or Lidda Ann (VAN SCOY) SARLES. I found a typed copy of the obituary of "Mrs. Rachel Ann (BENNETT) (VANSCOY) FORD" in the New London Public Library in the "VAN SCOY" vertical file. Her obituary only mentions children, Judson, Clara, and Ida. Daughter Allie, age 17, is listed in the 1880 census. Lidda Ann SARLES is listed in family reunion records as a daughter of Bishop and Rachel. Also, I have a postcard written in 1916 by "Mrs. Lizzie SARLES" of Rocky River, Ohio, to the reunion secretary, "Mrs. D. W. Willis." However, this note begins "Dear Friend."

Is any one working on the name MOSER and/or MOSIER? I have a MOSER/MOSIER family that arrived in Huron Co. in the fall of 1850. They came from Switzerland with three boys and one girl. A newborn baby boy, Fred, was left in Switzerland with a grandmother. Fred came over later. This part of the family is documented in Swiss records. A daughter and four more boys were born in or near Bellevue. The Ohio 1860 census of Bellevue lists the family as German. They spoke German but they were born in Bern, Switzerland. The Swiss born part of family was father Nicholas MOSER/MOSIER, b. 1817. Mother Elizabeth (FURRER) MOSER/MOSIER, b. 1812. Children- Nicholas 1839, John 1841, Ann Elizabeth 1846 (Ann also used the name Mary. She married a Wm. CANNON and they moved to Cleveland.), Christian b. 1849, and Frederick b. 1850. Children born in Ohio- Mary b. 1854, Wm. b.1856, James b. 1857, Edward b. 1859, and Adam b. about 1861. I tie in to the oldest son, Nicholas, b. 1839 in Switzerland.

The only thing I have found on my grandfather, Daniel BECK, was that he died at Hunt's Corners near Bellevue, Ohio and apparently committed suicide.
