Ken Shute Lookup Results-- Assuming the father of Isaac Tice was living in Ohio just before the birth of Isaac abt 1826, or still living in Ohio just after the birth of Isaac, I checked the census indexes for Ohio from Ancestry .com for 1820 and 1830. The images for these indexes just give the name of the head of the household. Members of the family are tallied according to gender and age group. There were 11 TICE names for the Ohio 1830 census, and six TICE names for the Ohio 1820 census. For the 1830 census they are (read name, county, and township)- John R. Tice, Belmont, Kirkwood; William Tice, Guernsey, Fairview; Solomon Tice, Hamilton, Cincinnati Ward 2; Snowden Tice, Hamilton, Sycamore; John Tice, Harrison, Freeport; William Tice, Sandusky, Sandusky; James Tice, Washington, Ludlow; John Tice, Washington, Ludlow; Solomon Tice, Jr. Washington, Ludlow; Solomon Tice, Washington, Ludlow. For the 1820 Census, they are- Peter Tice, Huron, Perkins; Abraham Tice, Lawrence, Decatur; Solomon Tice, Washington, Laurence; David Tice, Washington, Ludlow; James Tice, Washington, Ludlow; Solomon Tice, Jr. Washington, Ludlow. In the 1830 census, male family members are tallied in the following 13 columns-- 1- age 0-5; 2- age 5-10; 3- age 10-15; 4- age 15-20; 5- age 20-30; 6- age 30-40; 7- age 40-50; 8-age 50-60; etc. up to 13- age 100-110. The female members are similarly tallied starting with column 14. Allowing for the actual birth year of Isaac to have been a few years earlier, or a few years later, than the approximate 1826 year, I looked for cases in the 1830 list of 11 Tice names where there were no tallies in either the first (age 0-5) or second (age 5-10) columns. The Tice named in these cases might be considered unlikely as a candidate for the father of Isaac. There were two such cases- William Tice of Sandusky County, Sandusky Township, and John Tice of Washington County, Ludlow Township. This would leave nine names as possible father candidates. In the 1820 census, male family mambers are tallied in the following six columns-- 1- age 0-10; 2- age 10-16; 3-age 16-18; 4- age 18-26; 5- age 26-45; and 7- age 45 & up. Using the criteria I mentioned above for trying to eliminate unlikely father candidates, I found only one who had no tallies in column 1 (age 0-10). This was Solomon Tice of Washington County, Laurence Township, leaving five names as possible father candidates. One of the remaining, Peter Tice of Huron County, Perkins Township, however, might still be questionable. According to our Huron County, Ohio publications, Peter Tice died 22 Sep 1823 at age 50. He is buried in St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Norwalk Township. His wife Elizabeth, who died 12 Jan 1829 at age 47 is buried with him, as is a daughter, Caroline Tice, who died Mar 1820 age 9 months.Peter Tice and Frederick Forsyth began a business in 1818 in the "Red Store" on the corner of Main & Hester Streets where the Norwalk National Bank now (as of 1876) stands. The business was discontinued about 1821. There is also a reference to a son John who, with his father Peter Tice in 1816, put up the first framed building in the region. However, in one of Henry Timman's articles in his Just Like Old Times series, there is a reference to a Peter Tice, who, with his wife Elizabeth and family, came from New York (to Huron County) in the summer of 1818. This runs counter to your statement that " 1850 census for Peoria , IL says he AND his parents all born in OH." Hope this may help to further narrow down , with the information you already have, just where in Ohio Isaac Tice was born, and who his parents might be.

I'm looking for a death of the first husband of my gggm Hulda HATCH. His name was either George or Charles HATCH and the time frame would have been between 1840-1850. I recently found evidence that some of their children were born in Huron, OH, but don't know if that means the town or the county, so checking both. If you do find other HATCH names in that time frame, that would be helpful as the only information we have on this man is his initials G or C. Based on children's names, we think given name is likely George or Charles.

I am researching HASTINGS/RATLIFF/HALE and LILLO/GARRETT. I just can't get past either of my grandparents. Both families were (are) residents of Willard, Ohio. This is what information I do have- Arthur W. HASTINGS (Born 04-10-1916) South Solon, Ohio - he had 14 brothers and sisters. I only can locate about 6 of them. Arthur married Irene Frances RATLIFF on May 28, 1938 in Norwalk, Ohio. Joseph Francis LILLO - born 06-14-1920 unknown where. He had 9 brothers and sisters, some still living. There are two Joe LILLOs in Willard and everyone always mixes these family lines up (they both married "Bettys"). My grandfather is deceased and the other I believe is still living. While they are related (still haven't made the connection - I think their fathers were brothers) everyone seems to mix up the families. My Joseph married Elizabeth ("Betty) Marie GARRETT on January 20, 1939 - it may have been in Alabama or Kentucky not sure. It's my understanding that Joe's mother, my great grandmother, is buried in a Catholic cemetery in Willard. I don't know Joe's mother's name for sure. I think his dad may have been Charley. Is there a Catholic cemetery in Willard? As far as Betty goes, I have all her sibling information but can't locate any information on her parent's families. They were Encil GARRETT who married Mabel Ethel (maiden name unknown) they had eleven children. If any of this shakes some memories loose would you mind sharing?

My great-great-greatgrandfather was Silas BOWERS and thanks to a posting in 2001 by Jim Lewis and a detailed answer by Ken Shute I believe he has a strong Huron County connection. From census information and family records I knew my Silas BOWERS was born in New York and married Mary Ann [?] in the early 1830's in Ohio. Their first child was William W. BOWERS born in Blooming Grove Richland County Ohio in 1835. There were many TRUCKS/TRUX in Richland Co. and some family records have the BOWERS in Trucksville/Ganges. The Ken Shute lookup points out the Huron Co. marriage for Silas BOWERS and Mary Ann TRUX on Jan 6, 1833. This fits with Truxville, and William's birth a year or so later. Now I am interested in more information and how to see the sources mentioned in the lookup. 1. History of the Firelands - given as mentioning the death by freezing of Silas BOWERS (father of the Silas who married Mary Ann TRUX) in 1818. Is there more in this history? Where can I access a copy? 2. Guardianship of Clarissa and Silas BOWERS in the Huron Co. Ohio Kinologist, Vol 7, No. 1 page 215 spring 1992. Is this available? I wonder who was the guardian and what was their relation? 3. Estate Record for Silas BOWERS. Ken Shute mentions Probate Docket #1, page 7, Inventory Reocrd #1, Page 179 Common Pleas Journal Feb. 1818. Is this something I can request a copy of from the Common Pleas Court or is there another route to go? I would appreciate any other information on the BOWERS or TRUX. The family legends have that part of the family was Indian and the 1885 Nebraska census lists Mary Ann TRUX BOWERS as born in Ohio in 1814 of a father from PA and a mother IND. That would either be from Indiana before there was even a territory called Indiana and any settlements other than Native American or French, or it might mean Indian.

From his second marriage to Mrs. Polly BARRINGTON, his additional children were- Malavery b. abt 1832, Hiram b. abt 1836, and Rhoda b. about 1837. I know that he resided in Norwalk in 1819. To my knowledge, he and most of his family never left Norwalk. If there's anyone who has any info on this line, I would be most grateful for your help.

I have just gotten information on what I believe may be the marriage of my GGGrandparents. Samuel W. CARPENTER married Sarah Fischer MCLAUGHLIN on 18 April, 1857 in Huron Co. Ohio. I have a divorce decree from Lenawee Co. in Michigan that I can link directly to my GGGrandfather through land records in which he was divorced from His wife Sarah F. in 1875. According to the1880 census my GGrandfather, James Wilson CARPENTER was born in Ohio and in 1881 he married in Seneca Co. Ohio. With all these dates, names, and places so closely related I am hoping that a fellow researcher in Huron Co. may have other information that can confirm my suspicions. Any help would sincerely be appreciated.

I am seeking a burial reference for a person named Susannah HEMMINGER. She was shown as a widower in the census of 1850 in that area as follows- 1850 OH Census, Huron Co. New London Twp. p. 339a, line 8 Series M432, roll 697, dwelling 38, family 39, 16 July 1850. Susanna HEMMINGER, 60, b. Penn., cannot read or write. I hope that you might be able to locate her in a cemetery in that area. Her husband, who was Henry HEMMINGER, appears to have died in the decade between 1840 and 1850, and I would appreciate having his information as well, if you are able to locate this family.
