I am researching the family of Gordon CHAPIN, b. 1786 in MA. Gordon moved to Canada before 1813. In 1840 he left with some or all of his family and went to Ohio. We are unsure of what area as we haven't found him in any census records yet. (afraid he may have missed the census). I know there were CHAPINs in Huron Co., even a Gordon CHAPIN, but he doesn't seem to be ours, but are hoping he is related. Gordon and three of his children moved on to LaGrange Co., IN abt 1844. It is very possible that some of his children stayed in Ohio.

Perhaps this is a nickname?) 3.Gateway to the West by Bowers & Short. Page 556. Stark County, Ohio. Will Abstracts, 1811-1822. I can eliminate Iowa for this Phineas WATROUS, however they may be related somehow. There's no doubt as to the name patterns as his son Sears would have been named after Sears WATROUS who married Anne TAYLOR. I think that's his uncle but I have no proof yet. I checked the Ohio 1880 census and this is the right Phineas and he did marry this Jane WATROUS whose maiden name is CARSON, then she married a person called WILLIAMS and then married our Phineas WATROUS, and he died, and she married Jonas MOTTER, then she married David BROWNELL. At present I have a search for an obituary for her to see if there's anything in her obit (if she had one). She died in Chicago Junction, OH. This Phineas died in 1882 and I just can not get a trace on where they would have buried him. You'd think in Huron County because the Norwalk, Probate Vital records index says he died March 18, 1882 in Bronson. Wouldn't you think they'd bury him in Huron county? But the Huron County indexed cemetery records has no Phineas WATROUS grave in the index. Any ideas? Maybe he is buried there somewhere but the grave listing got lost. Where could I write or look for such a thing? I didn't find him in the cemetery with his wife and son. That's why I trying to find a newspaper of the area. Does any know of archived newspapers for 1882 - Bronson Township area? I'll stay tuned to anyones' suggestions.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - In our Huron County, Ohio publications I found references to various COLEs in Bronson Twp, including a David COLE. The Bronson Twp COLEs seem to have arrived in Bronson mainly from Cayuga County, NY and Ontario County, NY. I could find no references to your David COLE family in our cemetery Inscription book except for a reference to an "Experence" COLE," wife of David COLE. In our marriages of Huron County, Ohio, I found a David COLE who married, in 1843, a Keziah ROBERTSON. This might be your David COLE since his wife, "Experence," died in 1842 according to the cemetery inscription. You mentioned you were trying to connect your "group into the larger scheme of things." I assume you meant you would like to see if your David COLE family related in any way to these Bronson COLEs. I'm not sure if the information I give will help, but hopefully, this information may serve as a basis for your further research into this question. I usually don't get involved in this kind of generalized query, since it can be way too time-consuming to research, but it piqued my interest so here is what I found- 1. Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions. Peru Center/School House Cemetery, Peru Township. Page 720. Row 15. 4 Experence (sic) COLE, w/o David COLE, d. 27 Mar 1842, age 45y 6m 23d. 2. Old Book 1, Page 52. 3. Plat Book of 1845, Huron County, Ohio. David COLE, Greenfield Twp, page 47, section 3, lots 31, 32, 41; and Peru Twp, page 28, Section 4, lots 6 & 9. (I could find no other references to David, Alexander, or Franklin COLE in the 1873 or 1891 Atlases of Huron County, Ohio.) 4. History of Huron County, Ohio by W.W. Williams, 1879. Page 81. Alexander COLE is listed as a Private in the 3rd Regiment of Ohio Volunteers, called into service May 13, 1846 for the Mexican War. The members were discharged Aug. 31, 1846. Chapter on Bronson Township. Page 230. Mentions that Edward L. COLE moved into Bronson from Scipio, Cayuga County, NY in 1821. He settled in the 4th section where his son Joseph now lives. He died June 13, 1859 at age 60. Page 230. Mentions Lemon COLE came out (to Bronson) with his brother Edward when the latter first came. He returned to New York, then subsequently married and moved to Bronson about 1824, settling on lot 33. He died there in 1861. None of his family now (1879) are still in the township. Page 231. Includes the information that the first settlers on the old State road in Bronson Township were David COLE, Abijah Rundell, and Nathan Tanner. They came to Ohio from Cayuga County, NY with their families in the spring of 1815 and remained in the township of Avery (now Milan) until 1817 when they moved into Bronson. COLE made his location on lot 16, section 3. He resided here for eight to nine years, then, his wife having previously died, returned to NY, joined the Shakers and his children became scattered. His oldest son Hylas was killed in 1825 by the fall of a tree. Page 231. Mentions Bethuel COLE, brother of the above mentioned David COLE, moved into Bronson with his family from Ontario County, NY, in Oct., 1823 and settled on lot 19. Bethuel COLE died at his original residence in 1873, at age 78. Mrs. COLE, now an octagenarian (1879) is making her home with her son-in-law T.J. MCCAGUE. Page 232. Mentions, Attrusha COLE, brother of David and Bethuel, arrived (in Bronson) in Feb., 1829, and settled on lot number 22, section number three, where he has since resided. He came out first in 1818. He is now (1879) nearly 80 years old. His wife died in Jan. 1876. Page 232. States- The first settlement in section two was made by David Clark in 1816. He emigrated to Ohio from Middletown, CT, and took up some 400 acres of land in the above section, building his cabin on lot number one. He died in Bronson about the year 1830, quite advanced in life. His wife died afterwards. There were five sons and a daughter, who became the wife of Mr. John Laylin, of Norwalk. One of the sons now lives in Iowa, and is the only surviving member of the family. In Williams' History of Huron County, Ohio he gives the census results, by name, for six of the 19 Huron County, Ohio Townships, taken from the 1827 Census of Huron County. This census gave the names of white male inhabitants over the age of 21. Only two of the six townships listed the name COLE. They were Greenfield- Jeremiah COLE, and Bronson- Lemon, James, Edward E., and David COLE. 5. Just Like Old Times, Book V, by Henry Timmin, published originally in the Norwalk Reflector. Page 75. "Take a ride along Ridge Road," dated Jun. 7, 1985. Refers to Hester Cemetry in Bronson Township which began on the farm of Lemon and Hannah COLE whose son, Alfred B. died Aug. 21, 1831.

Although I get my namesake from him, I know the least about this side of the family because he left his family when they were fairly young. According to stories from my grandfather and great aunt, they found out he died in Norwalk, Ohio around 1944. I don't know if he is buried in Norwalk or not. I have requested a death certificate but I am still waiting to hear back. In previous searches I have found our last name spelled NETHAMER, NIETHAMER, NEITHAMMER, and NEIDHAMER. Ken Shute Look Up Results - Like Nancy Paramore, I had no success in finding the death location of your Albert F. NEITHAMER (and other spelling variations) in any of our Huron County, Ohio publications. However, in going to the internet, I found some interesting references to an Albert F. NIETHAMER which I offer for possible further investigation. You may already be aware of these, but here they are. From Ancestry.com World Tree- The spouse of an Albert F. NEITHAMER was given as Stella DARIO. The mother of Stella was listed as a Hattie SMITH. Google gives a picture and a brief commentary on a Stella M. DAVIS, Class of 1919, Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts. It was taken from the "One Hundred Year Biographical Directory of Mount Holyoke College 1837-1937." The commentary reads as follows- "Stella M. DAVIS 1919 (Mrs. Albert F. NIETHAMER). Address in 1937- 1948 C St., San Diego, CA; Cataloguer 1919-1921 Yale University Library; Married 1922; husband was a salesman; Children- Katherine born and died 1929." (This wouldn't seem to be a bad fit for the wife of your Albert NEITHAMER if you can accept that the Stella DARIO from Ancestry World tree above, and this Stella DAVIS, are one and the same. The fact that her husband was referred to in the past tense is of interest also.) The web site for this is- www.mtholyoke.edu/~dalbino/women26/stella.html. Further from Ancestry.com, California Deaths, 1940-1997-- First- Albert Ferdinand NIETHAMER; Birth Date- 20 Jan. 1889; Death Date- 20 May 1981; Birth Place- Pennsylvania; Death Place- San Diego; Mother's Maiden Name- HINTZ. (The birth year (1889) would appear to be roughly in line with one a bit later that's implied for Stella M. DAVIS of Mount Holyoke College. But the death year (1981) and the death place (San Diego) don't correspond at all with that which you have (about 1944 in Huron County, Ohio.)) Second- Reading Pennsylvania Births, 1876-1905. Albert F. NIETHAMER; Birth Date- 1-26-1889; File Number- 92.

I am on a fishing trip for Issac TICE b. abt. 1826 somewhere in Ohio. Have never found out his parents names or where he was born in Ohio. 1850 census for Peoria Illinois says he and parents all born in Ohio. All other census he was on say the same. Issac TICE lived in Peoria for an unknown amount of time, at least I know it was from 1849 to 1853, then he and his wife, Elizabeth ROSS moved to Oregon, Clatsop Co. where he bought land in 1854 and sold it in 1857. Then he and his family moved to Harrison Co. Iowa where he died shortly after 1870. I have contacted many researches in Washington Co.
