I have been searching for a Benjamin CRAIG who had a son by the name of Lewis CRAIG. Lewis was born appx. 1827 or 1828. I have found only two Benjamin CRAIGs in the 1850 Ohio census index. One was in Huron County, and the other was in Washington County. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a reply from someone on this list who is either researching the CRAIG family or has any knowledge of either Lewis CRAIG or Benjamin CRAIG.

I am new to this list as I just traced my ancestry to (thru) Huron County, OH. Until recently, all I had was some 'oral tradition' regarding farming in the Western Reserve. My Gr-Gr-Gr-Grandfather is Nathan HATFIELD who was married to Cynthia WETMORE in Wyoming County NY. They moved to Huron County in 1833 with at least 4 children and bought and cleared land in Peru Township (Section 2-30). They had six children, Mary A., who I know nothing about; Elmirea moved to North Dakota with her husband Cyrus FRANCIS; Hanna L. resided in OH with her husband James HOWELL; William H. moved to Rock County WI in 1856 [this is my line], after his mother's death; Harriet moved to Peoria County IL with her husband George ROWCLIFF; and Charles N. who died at age 13. Nathan died in 1846 and Cynthia died in 1855. They along with Charles, are buried in Peru Center Cemetery.I would appreciate any other information that someone may have. The dates I am most interested in are 1833 to 1856. I am planning on visiting the area and would like some help finding the original farm and the Peru Center cemetery

I am just learning about my mother's ancestors and recently joined the OGS & HCC. I found the List site trying to determine the address of the land where my mother's mother was born so I can see it when I come up there July 11, 2002. My mother's mother, Bertha Roselle BOWLBY was born in Plymouth, 10 October 1871, the daughter of Edward Thomas BOWLBY and Mary (MCCLURE) BOWLBY. Mary was born 4 July 1835, the daughter of Thomas & Rachel (TOWNSEND) MCCLURE of Havana, New York. I don't know if their farm was in Huron or Richland County. Edward was born 13 March 1829 in Hunterdon County New Jersey, the son of Samuel BOWLBY and Martha (GARMEN) BOWLBY, who settled in Huron County, Ripley Township by 12 May 1846. Samuel died 10 September 1850 and is buried in Delphi Cemetery. Edward and family bought a farm in Plymouth by 1870 and moved to Dixon, Illinois by 1878.

I am looking for Ezra Allen SMITH (his father was Hezekiah) and his wife Harriet Melissa SANDERS. They lived in Berlin Heights or Berlin for a while before moving to Indiana. So, I was curious if there were any SANDERS/SAUNDERS in that geographic region earlier? I don't know where Melissa's family came from but possibly from NY into Ohio early.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - In our 1873 Atlas, Huron County, Ohio, I find the following- M. BOWLBY, (Town of) Delphi, Ripley Twp, lot 20, page 71. (This lot faces New Haven Street.) S. BOWLBY, Ripley Twp, Section 3, Lot 15. page 43. (This property is on the northern outskirts of Delphi.) (I could find no reference to a Thomas MCCLURE in our Plat Book of 1845, nor in our Atlases for 1873 and 1891, Huron County, Ohio.) The 1850 census for Huron County, Ohio, appearing as a link on the HCC/OGS home page (sites.rootsweb.com/~ohhuron), lists the following "BOUBLYs" for census page 212b. Read line #, first name, age, and place of birth- 29, David, 3/12, OH; 35, Dennis S., 3, NY; 33, Edward, 20, NJ; 26, Emanuel, 29, NJ; 27, Lucretia, 25, NJ; 31, Martha, 50, VA; 28, Martha, 2, IA; 32, Matilda, 25, NJ; 30, Samuel, 74, NJ; 34, Samuel, Jr., 16, NY. The biggest plum, however, came through the use of the Google search engine. If you go to the web site www.bowlbyfamily.org/ancestor/index.htm, you will pull up a lengthy and detailed description of the "Descendents of Richard BOWLBY." You will be particularly interested in the "Ninth Generation" which discusses Samuel BOWLBY and his children from his first wife, Ann HENDRICKSON, and his children from his second wife, Martha GARMON/GARMAN. The web site for this "Ninth Generation" is www.bowlbyfamily.org/ancestor/d4644.htm. The "Eleventh Generation" describes the connection between Lydia BOWLBY and Wheeler HACKETT. The web site for this is www.bowlbyfamily.org/ancestor/d10419.htm.

I'm looking for a marriage record of the second marriage for Peter WHITRIGHT/WITRIGHT. I believe that his first wife Elizabeth SHOEMAKER died, most likely in Montgomery Township, Ashland Co. and Peter married second to Deborah BERRY BOSLER the widow of George BOSLER of Ruggles Township, Huron County. Can anyone offer suggestions as to where I might find the death record for Elizabeth SHOEMAKER WHITRIGHT, ca 1835? Both the marriage and death record have eluded me for years. Does anyone know if there is a "gap" in birth, marriage, death records for the time period 1830-1840 for Huron/Ashland/Richland Counties? It appears that it is most difficult to locate them. Are there any printed church records? This family was Lutheran.

Ethel Look Up Results - I didn't find the marriage of Peter and Deborah, but I did find a couple of email addresses that might help you. Thomas A Stobi SFO, at [email protected] says that Deborah was in Hamilton Twp, Decatur County, Iowa by 1856. I found the 1860 census for Decatur and am listing it though you probably already have it- Peter WHITRIGHT, 74, b PA, farmer, worth 300/100; Deborah, 60, b PA; Lydia, 17, b OH. Found a military record for Peter - 2 Regiment (Hindman's), Ohio Militia, entered-Priv., exited- Priv., roll box 230, roll exct 602. Another note by someone was George BOSLER d bet 1836-1837 (possibly narrowing the year of marriage of Deborah to Peter). Another email address that is researching this is [email protected].

I am looking for the gravesite of George THOMPSON who died in late 1850. He and his wife Lucy Bell were married in Huron County in 1828 and, although he is shown as having real estate valued at over $8,200 in the 1850 census, he is not shown on the 1845 plat map for Huron County. He is listed living with his wife and children in the 1850 Ohio census in Ridgeway Township, Huron County. Is there any George THOMPSON listed in the cemetery book that died in 1850? Also, could you look to see when Lucinda THOMPSON died? Perhaps that is the long form of Lucy. Were there any more THOMPSONs near George or Susan?

I have 3 questions that I'm hoping you can help me answer, or can steer me to someone who may have the answers- 1. Was there a village or town, in Huron County in the early 1800's named Knowlton? 2. If there was a Knowlton, where was it located? 3. Where can I find a circa 1820 Huron County Map?

Tom Neel Look Up Results - Knowlton was located where the B&O Railroad crosses State Route 60 just south of New London across the line in Ruggles Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio. The railroad station was known as Hereford, and the post office was called Knowlton. There was some effort to call it South New London, but that name was never popular. Local residents call it Hereford today, although no buildings survive except the farmhouses at the top of the hill on either side. The depot was built at Hereford in 1891, so its creation date is well beyond the formation of Ashland County in 1846. It was not a town when it was part of Huron County. The Valley Hotel at Hereford caught fire and was destroyed in 1923, and the place died out quickly after that. In the 50's, I believe, the bridge was built for SR 60 over the railroad tracks. Now, you have to go down the old road via a private residence driveway to access the railroad. There are still remnants of foundations of railroad buildings and the like between the railroad and Buck Creek on the east side of Route 60. The Knowlton name came from the KNOWLTON family who lived at the top of the hill - Hereford Hill. The term Hereford came from the Hereford cattle that the KNOWLTONs raised. The KNOWLTON family lived there long before the railroad was built, and perhaps the post office is older. I'll have to check the postmaster records. The early town of Fiddler's Green, with lots on either side of the Huron/Ashland Co line, at the intersection of Rt 60 and County Line Road, was located just a stone's throw north of Hereford as you go into New London. When the railroad (Big Four) was built through New London in 1850/51, they physically moved the store buildings at Fiddler's Green into New London.

Richard died in 1883 and Louisa in 1882, both died in Toledo but do not appear to be buried there. A friend of mine who just returned from a trip to Ohio said that she found in "Cemetery Inscriptions of Huron County" an entry for "Laura daughter of R & L." buried in 1848. From what I can find on the net this must be an entry for Laura A. on page 706, and could very likely be a daughter of Richard and Louisa.
