I'm trying to find out what happened to Matthew MCKELVEY STARR. I know the STARR family is very prevalent in Greenfield, Huron County, beginning in the late 1700s. The MCKELVEY name is also very prevalent in Ohio. Matthew came west (California) with his sister Alvira Mercy in 1860 but then disappeared. Alvira married my great-grandfather in 1861 in California. According to some of the information I have, Matthew was born in 1830 and died on 16 Feb 1873 in California. I have not been able to confirm through other sources if the dates are accurate. He supposedly married Loviah ARTHUR STARR on 27 Sep 1855 and they had three children: Carrie(1859), Julia(1862), and Frank(1865). Their birth dates might indicate that Carrie was born in Ohio and the other two in California.

I have traced an ancestor of my great-great grandfather (David A. BOOZ) by the name of Thomas POWERS to living in Norwalk in 1840 and 1850. He is probably the grandfather of David, but I do not have evidence of him. All the knowledge I have was that David was the son of David BOOZ and Sarah Jane POWERS, who married in St. Louis, MO on October 28, 1848; David was born in Macoupin County, IL November 6, 1849. Sarah died two weeks later on November 19, 1849, and David, Sr. moved to Sacramento where he died in December of 1850. Through guardianship papers and census information, David, Jr. was sent to live with Milton EDWARDS and wife Esther POWERS EDWARDS (Esther being a cousin of his), and that David was heir to the estate of Thomas POWERS. I have just found out that Thomas died in Norwalk on January 3, 1859. This information was garnered through the bible records of Milton EDWARDS. The Huron, OH Cemetery Inscriptions book lists Thomas as "an artist" and is buried in St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery. He is buried next to Caroline POWERS, who was probably his wife. Does anyone have any books or other information on this family or other POWERS?

Ken Shute Look Up Results - In our Huron County, Ohio publications I find the cemetery inscription for Thomas POWERS and his wife Caroline that you mentioned, as well as several articles written by Henry Timman for the Norwalk Reflector which refers to Henry POWERS as a portrait painter, residing in Norwalk. 1. Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions- St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Norwalk, Page 544. 189 Thomas POWERS, "an artist," d. 3 Jan 1859 AE 45y 3m 10d. 190 Caroline M. POWERS, w/o T. POWERS, d. 28 Mar 1851, AE 33y 7m 4d; "The Star of hope that Beams on high, Hath lit her Spirit to the Sky." 2. History of the Firelands, by W. W. Williams, 1879, Page 148. Section on Norwalk- In an item on the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.), it mentions that the Huron Lodge No. 37, I.O.O.F., was instituted at Norwalk April 14, 1845, by authority of a charter granted by the Right Worthy Grand Lodge of Ohio. Among the charter members was an A. POWERS. Among members added by initiation was a Thomas POWERS. 3. Just Like Old Times by Henry Timman, published originally in the Norwalk Reflector. Book I, page 136, "Art in Early Norwalk," dated Nov. 15, 1974- This article mentions that Norwalk had its own resident artists during the time when portrait painting was popular, and that Thomas POWERS, who had a state-wide reputation according to his obituary, was one such artist. His wife Caroline died here in 1851, and Thomas died in 1859 in Sandusky, leaving a daughter 14 years of age. The article goes on to say that the family belonged to the First Baptist Church during the time that the Timothy Baker family was so active. Each family had its own pews, and at one time Thomas POWERS painted the portraits of the members of the Baker family on their pews. 4. Just Like Old Times by Henry Timman, published originally in the Norwalk Reflector. Book V, page 136, "Farms surrounded original town plot," dated Aug. 8, 1986- Two homes built in Norwalk, and their successive owners, are described in this article. One of these homes at 142 East Main Street, built about 1837-1839, was owned initially by Timothy Baker, and probably rented by him to others. Eventually, Timothy Baker sold the house to Thomas POWERS, a local artist. POWERS did portrait painting and once painted the portraits of the Baker family on the back of their pew in the First Baptist Church. Thomas POWERS owned this house for six years, when he sold it to the Nathan Wooster family. 5. Just Like Old Times by Henry Timman, published originally in the Norwalk Reflector. Book III, page 131, "The Sons of Abner Baker," dated Jul. 3, 1980- This article describes the family of Abner Baker who served in the Revolutionary War and who is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk, Ohio. The last paragraph of this article mentions that sometime around 1840, an itinerant artist (possibly Norwalk's own Thomas POWERS, or Jasper Miles of Berlin Heights) painted three portraits of Abner Baker, his son Theodore Baker, and of Theodore's son Henry. These are still owned by the family and are on display at the Allen Art Museum in Oberlin.

I am looking for any information about a small printing shop that my Grandfather and Grandmother, Emmet and Elizabeth (ZIMMER) AUSTIN, opened in New London, about 1900 or maybe as late as 1905, named the Austin Printing Company. It was located near the railroad tracks in New London. They owned and operated it until 1912, when Emmet died as a result of injuries sustained when he visited CE Ward Regalia Company in New London. As Emmet walked through the CE Ward plant, to see if they wanted him to print advertising flyers, a large beam fell on his head. He died a several months later, as a result of that injury. They never admitted being at fault. In fact, they denied that the accident even occurred. With no insurance, and no settlement from CE Ward, Elizabeth (Lizzie) kept the printing business running for a few years, but couldn't keep up with running the business and caring for her two small children, Cora and Catherine (my Mom!), so she sold the business, around 1915. If you have any information about the Austin Printing Company, pictures of the building, flyers or products, who it was sold to, or any ideas where I might find information, please let me know! I live in Columbus now, and am only 10 minutes from the OHS library, so I would be happy to trade any digging I can do here with anything you can find in New London!

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I checked our Huron County, Ohio publications for any references to Emmet and Elizabeth AUSTIN, and to the Austin Printing Company, without success. However, I did find a picture of the C.E. Ward Co. in New London where your grandfather met his unfortunate accident. It is shown in our Huron County, Ohio, A Pictorial History, published by the Norwalk Reflector, 1993. The picture appears on page 84. The caption reads: "A 1908 postcard shows the employees of New London's C.E. Ward Co., manufacturer of regalia, caps and gowns and uniforms. (Photo courtesy of Paul Wireman)." The picture shows a long line of the employees standing outside of the building. The building is a long, two-story structure with the sign "LODGE SUPPLIES" on the front. Perhaps you can view a copy at the OHS library, or obtain one through inter-library loan.

Does anyone have anything on Warren WEBSTER? My great grandmother's obituary states that she was the daughter of Warren and Adelia WEBSTER born in Olena, Huron County, Ohio December 25, 1865. I have searched all the censuses and other records from Huron County and can find no mention of this family. Other sources said she was born in Wood County, but I couldn't find anything there either. This is my brick wall I guess. I thought because I never heard mention of him, but have heard a little about Adelia with another husband, that perhaps he died in the Civil War, but can't find him there either.

Debbie Lookup Results-- Biography from "Portrait and Biographical Album of Livingston County, IL" Chapman Brothers, Chicago, 1888. Warren WEBSTER, one of the most worthy and intelligent members of the farming community of Broughton Township, is a fine illustration of the self-made man, who commenced life without other capital than his strong hands and resolute will, and has built up a good homestead from a tract of land of which he took possession when it was little removed from its primitive condition. He has been a resident of this county for a period of over thirty years, and numbers scores of friends among its intelligent and most highly respected people. He followed general farming the first two years, but latterly has given considerable attention to stock-raising, in which he has met with unqualified success. He has been particularly active in the establishment and maintenance of schools, and has served as Director in his township for a number of years. His precepts have closely been followed by practice in his own family, as he has given his children the best advantages which his means would afford, and fitted them to take their station in life as useful and intelligent members of society. Our subject was born in Little Valley, Tuscarawas Co., NY, Jan 18, 1834, and is the son of Warren and Eveline (EWELL) WEBSTER, of New England ancestry, the father a native of Connecticut and the mother of Massachusetts. They removed to New York State after their marriage, where the death of both occurred when about forty and thirty-five years of age respectively. Mr. WEBSTER spent his early years at his father's homestead in Tuscarawas County, in the meantime receiving a common school education and becoming familiar with farm life. He started out for himself when a youth of nineteen years, and coming to Seneca County, this State, was engaged two years thereafter as a farm laborer. He then migrated as far east as Norwalk, Ohio, in the vicinity of which town he worked probably five years, and there met his fate in the person of Miss Phoebe KNAPP, to whom he was married on the 16th of October, 1855. The young people a few weeks later came to Kendall County where they remained a year and Mr. WEBSTER then purchased the 160 acres of land in Broughton Township, this county, to which he soon removed and where they have since remained. They were not exempt from the early struggles of life in a new settlement, but in looking around upon their comfortable home with its modern buildings and other embellishments, feel well repaid for their toil and sacrifice. The household of our subject and his excellent lady in due time included six children: Chloe Eudora was born July 5, 1866, and is now the wife of Michael KUHN, a prosperous farmer of Henry County, this State; Charles Emmet was born Dec 16, 1867, and is now living at home; Herman Alva was born Feb 20, 18679; Warren Alonzo, Aug 21, 1870; Geneva, Jun 19, 1874; Delbert Eli, Aug 17, 1880. Mr. WEBSTER has two brothers and four sisters living: Austin is a resident of Kansas; Levi is farming in Dwight Township, this county, Apphia is the widow of Matthew COX and resides at Seneca, IL; Julia is married and a resident of Iowa; Anise, Mrs. Eben NEFF, lives at Newark, IL; Eveline is the wife of Samuel BROUGHTON, of Indiana. The wife of our subject was born Dec 19, 1828, near Norwalk, Ohio, one of the most beautiful cities in the Buckeye State. Her parents were Ethan and Hannah (SMITH) KNAPP, natives of New York State, where they were reared and married, and whence they soon afterward removed to Ohio, where they spent the remainder of their days. Mrs. Webster has two sisters and one brother living, namely: Catherine, the wife of Lewis WILBUR, of Wood County, Ohio; Charles and Julia, Mrs. Herman TERWILLIGER, who reside near Norwalk.

I am seeking the obituary of Thomas POWERS, a well-known artist in Norwalk and Sandusky, who passed away January 3, 1859. He and his wife, Caroline (who died in 1851), are buried in St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Norwalk. I know he had a daughter named Francis living with him, but I am anxious to find out about other members of the family to fit my connection.

Rebecca Williams Look Up Results - From Commemorative Biographical Record of the counties of Huron and Lorain, Ohio, containing Biographical Sketches of Prominent and Representative Citizens, and of Many of the Early Settled Families, Illustrated, Chicago, J. H. Beers & Co., 1894, pg. 354-- C.B. TUDOR, a leading merchant of Chicago Junction [Willard], is the son of Salathiel and Mary J. (WILSON) TUDOR. His great-great grandfather TUDOR was born in Wales; the maternal great-grandfather of subject was born in Ireland, and the maternal great-grandmother was a native of Germany. Salathiel and Mary J. TUDOR were natives of Pennsylvania and Ohio, respectively. Salathiel TUDOR was a tailor, but later learned carpentry, and applied himself to that trade for some time. About 1827 he came with his parents to Richmond Township, Huron Co., Ohio, but some time afterward removed with his father to Muskingum County. He was married in Muskingum County, where he resided for a short time, until the glowing accounts of the prairie lands of Illinois urged him to move farther west. For thirteen years he lived in that State, but in 1859 returned to Muskingum County, Ohio, where he made his home until his removal to Chicago Junction in 1883. His wife died in Illinois in 1855. They had three sons and three daughters, four of whom grew to maturity, namely: William, who enlisted in the One Hundred and Twenty-second O.V.I., when seventeen years old, and was killed at Locust Grove, Va., in 1863; J. W., a farmer in Clarke county, Ill.; Lyman, residing in Guernsey county, Ohio; and C.B., a resident of Chicago Junction. The father entered the army in 1862, served through the Civil war, and is now a veteran of the G.A.R. C.B. TUDOR was born March 18, 1851, in Edgar County, Ill., received a somewhat limited education in the district schools there, and came to Ohio in 1859. He was engaged in farm work until the age of nineteen years, when he was employed for the bridge and carpenter department on the B. & O. R.R., where he remained from 1873 till 1880. In that year, he and George DILLON established a hardware store at Chicago Junction, but at the close of the year's business Mr. TUDOR purchased his partner's interest, and for the succeeding years conducted it alone. His brother-in-law, D.A. BISHOP, then entered into a partnership with him, and the firm carried on trade until the spring of 1892, when Mr. TUDOR again became sole proprietor. He began business on a capital of twelve hundred dollars, and now carries a stock ranging in value from seven thousand to ten thousand dollars. His interests are not altogether mercantile. In 1889, in partnership with Otis SYKES, he bought fifty-six lots in Matson's west side sub-division, and of these only twenty remain unsold. Seven years before, in 1882, he and Mr. SYKES built the brick block in which our subject's large hardware store is located. On October 8, 1878, Mr. TUDOR was united in marriage with Miss Della SEVAULT, who was born in Huron county, of which her father, Jacob SEVAULT, is an old settler. Of their two children, Ebert died in infancy, and Glenn, a bright boy of eleven years, resides with his parents. In political life Mr. TUDOR votes with the Republican party in State and National elections, but is not a politician, as his business interests are too numerous to warrant him in giving his attention to public matters, though he has served four years on the school board. Socially he is a member of Lodge No. 748, I.O.O. F.; in religion he is a member of the United Brethren Church.

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- I checked our Huron County, Ohio publications, including History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879, and Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions, for any references to Onstine. The only ones I found were in our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, by Scheuer Publications. They were- Frederick Onstine m. Remember Sherman 4 Mar 1819. Christine Onstine m. William Crawford 30 (sic) Feb 1824. (Note- the online IGI website-- www.familysearch.org-- shows this date as 3 Feb 1824). In our History of Seneca County, Ohio by Warner & Beers, 1886, I find, in a list of original land owners, Frederick Onstine owning land in Venice and Reed Townships, and Michael Onstine owning land in Venice Township. In the website www.ancestry.com these same names appear in a larger Onstine family. They are- Parents- Jeurg Fredrick Onstine; Elizabeth Walker. Parents of Jeurg and Elizabeth- Johan Jeurg Anstein; Catharina Beurger. Children of Jeurg and Elizabeth- Christina-- b.4 Nov 1798; Daniel-- b. 22 Jun 1784; Fredrick-- b. 1 Mar 1786; Henry-- b. 15 Sep 1793; George-- b. 15 Aug 1788; Elizabeth-- b. 19 Feb 1789; Michael-- b. 16 Sep 1790; John-- b. 8 Sep 1795; Philip-- b. 22 Mar 1804. Ancestry.com also gives census records which include the above Onstine children. Read first name, year of census, and location- George, 1870, Newburgh Twp, Cuyahoga County, OH. Daniel, 1820, Blackriver Twp, Huron County, OH. Frederick, Jr., 1820, Blackriver Twp, Huron County, OH.. Frederick, 1820, Blackriver Twp, Huron County, OH. Henry, 1820, Brownhelm Twp, Huron County, OH. Daniel, 1830, Amherst Twp, Lorain County, OH. Frederick, 1830, Amherst Twp, Lorain County, OH. Frederick, 1840, Amherst Twp, Lorain County, OH. George, 1830, Amherst Twp, Lorain County, OH. George, 1840, Amherst Twp, Lorain County, OH. Henry, 1830, Amherst Twp, Lorain County, OH. Henry, 1840, Amherst Twp, Lorain County, OH. John, 1830, Amherst Twp, Lorain County, OH. Philipp, 1840, Amherst Twp, Lorain County, OH. (Note- "Blackriver" and "Brownhelm" Townships for Huron County, Ohio are unfamiliar names. Perhaps they were very early names that did not endure as township names.) The Ohio Land Records in Ancestry.com shows Frederick Onstine owning four parcels of land in Seneca County, OH. They were issued 6 Dec 1830 by the land office at Tiffin, Seneca County, OH. In size they were 155.06 acres, 160 acres, 80 acres and 80 acres. The War of 1812 Service Records in Ancestry.com shows Daniel, Frederick and Henry Onstine as Privates in Chapin's Detachment, New York Volunteers. The New York Military Equipment Claims, War of 1812, shows Daniel Onstine as an applicant, with residence given as "Buffalo, Ohio." The amount allowed was $33.00. If you would like more specifics on the land owned by Frederick and Michael Onstine in Seneca County, Ohio, let me know.

Several deaths were mentioned and I found names in the Huron County Index on-line. I am looking for Solomon DAVIS who died October 22, 1886 and Jerome STEVENS who died around April 1, 1886 (was shot to death).
