This is the letter I received when I inquired about Erie Co. I hope someone can help me find records of these people. They were pioneers. According to the "Erie County, Ohio, Cemetery Census Before 1909" I found the following- Florence Twp, Birmingham Cemetery- DALEY, Anna M, d 11 SEP 1854, 2y 2m 24d, d/o J M & H M " , Catharine R, d 10 MAR 1855, 64y 10m 6d, w/o James. " , James, b 9 JUL 1815, d 8 FEB 1893. " , John M, d 13 MAR 1866, 46y, Capt of Co 7 ?, USSS. " , James, Sr, 27 SEP 1768 - 18 SEP 1852, 83y 11m 21d. " , Sarah H, b 14 MAY 1870, d 4 FEB 1901, w/o James. This is all that is listed. Unfortunately, there are no death records in Erie County that early. We weren't formed until 1838. Before then the area was part of Huron Co, est. 1809, but I doubt they have anything that early either. I would check out the Huron County page and post some queries there. Such an early settler may be recorded somewhere in their history. Their Historical Society is one of the oldest in the state.

My G-G grandfather was Ezra ROOT. He was born in Loraine Co, Ohio 11/1839. I believe his father was Solomon ROOT. I found a Solomon ROOT in Huron Co in the 1830 census. It looks like the township is on the county line. Was there ever a division or relocation of county lines between Huron and Loraine? Is it possible that these would be the same person at the same location? Are there church or school records for the area that would help be identify the children in the family? There were several but of course names weren't listed.

I came upon this index at the Tombstone Project site and noticed a Kunigunda HILTZ. I hadn't been told about that burial. My great great grandmother was Kinegunda (possibly misspelled) HILTZ BAILEY. She was buried in Lucas County as Kinney BAILEY so this might be a relative of hers. I've transferred the list to here and wonder if you could look up some of them for me. I have some names already looked up from St. Paul's and St. Joseph's. Is this a different book because the names I have been given were on pages 508 and 791. I also received some SIMON names. But I don't have these others. I'm wondering if you could send me the information on the remaining names. Or, are these names just mentioned on those pages and not necessarily buried there because I notice I have Kunigunda's name from page 508 but it only shows that she arrived here with her parents. Marilyn Lane Look Up Results - I saw your posting today and couldn't help notice that you are researching UNDERHILL and DAY. I have these names in my ancestry. Here is what I know- Henry TAYLOR married Hannah UNDERHILL. Hannah was the daughter of James UNDERHILL and Deborah SOUTHERLAND. She was born 27 Jun 1798 in Easton, Washington Co., NY. I first find her and Henry TAYLOR living in New London, Huron Co., OH in the 1850 census. I'm not sure when they married because when Hannah died in 1883 in Quincy, Branch Co., MI the obituary said that it hadn't been long since their 50th anniversary. If that is true, they would have been married about 1852/53. However, there are TAYLOR children who were born as early as 1826. Henry must have been married to someone else before Hannah and she may not be the mother of any of his children. Now for my DAY connection- Henry's son, William H. TAYLOR, born 1826, married Eunice DAY, born 1826. They married 8 Jan 1850 in Huron Co., OH. They moved to Branch Co., MI in the 1850's and both died there. I don't know who Eunice's parents were.

Other first names that may be brother or cousin of Jacob would be Benjamin, Daniel, and Edgar. If you run across their names it would be helpful. JOHNSON (could be her father, Marshall JOHNSON, or her mother, Marinda BRADLEY JOHNSON). Also, Sarah A. JOHNSON-I have Sarah's signature on a document, but have no clue how she was related to Antoinette, and am hoping the cemetery inscription might help. Ken Shute Look Up Results - I checked all of your UNDERHILLs in our Huron County, Ohio publications, and could find references to them, in general, only from 1845 to 1873, although two members of the family, Andrew and Charles, appeared to stay till at least 1880. There were no references to them in our marriage book, cemetery inscription book, death index 1867-1908, History of the Fire Lands, Baughman's History, etc., suggesting they moved on to other pastures sometime after 1873. Here is what I found- 1. 1870 Census Index, Huron County, Ohio, by HCC/OGS, 1999. Following UNDERHILLs appear on census page 312 for Greenwich Township. Read first name, age and place of birth. UNDERHILL, Ruggles Twp, page 79, section 3, lot 6, 59 acres; section 3, lot 10, 32 acres. (Note- If this is your Jacob, have you checked for Jacob and family in Ashland County, Ohio? Ruggles Twp, Huron County, became part of Ashland County, Ohio in 1846 when Ashland was created.) 4. Atlas of 1873, Huron County, Ohio. H. UNDERHILL, Greenwich Twp, page 45, section 1, lot 50, 118.5 acres. (Note- I assume this is possibly Harvey UNDERHILL. When I checked this same section 1, lot 50, 118.5 acres in Greenwich Twp in the Atlas of 1891, I find it is then owned by an Abarella Cowgill). In addition to the above, I checked the online IGI web site (www.family search.org) for Harvey UNDERHILL and found references to him in items 10, 11, 18, and 30. (Set options for United States, and search all states.) In item 10 he is shown as born 11 Oct 1821 in Morrow (Warren County), OH, with Jacob UNDERHILL and Rachel AMES as parents. In item 11, Harvey is shown marrying Anna SEYMORE 6 Jan 1848 in Morrow, OH. In the latter items, Harvey is shown with the same birthdate, but with the birthplace location given as Yorktown, Westchester, NY. He died 8 Jan 1904 and was buried in Neosha, KS. Also, in the last item, Harvey's parents are shown as Jacob UNDERHILL and Sarah UNDERHILL, with wife Anna SEYMORE who was listed as born 4 Sep 1824; died 6 Dec 1900; and was buried 8 Dec 1900 in Neosha, KS. This last item has additional clickable details on pedigree and family. You probably have all this IGI information, but I thought I'd include it just in case. I am not including any information on your SINGERs since, because of the time required, I restrict my look ups normally to just one surname at time. If you definitely know the SINGERs you named settled in Huron County, tell me which one(s) you are most interested in, and get back to me with their full names, including middle initials if you have them, along with any other helpful information such as township, period of settlement, etc.

Then if that's so, why were they buried with their parents instead of spouse's? Oh dear!!! What I'm wondering is, if you could find someone to turn the stone over so it could be read. Maybe I'll see if I can talk hubby into going with me and we will look to see what can be done. Please contact me in a few days to remind me. What is encouraging is the fact that M.& M. JOHNSON were listed as parents of Victoria.

Andrew and Charles UNDERHILL were my Gr.Grandmother's brothers, they left Ohio in about 1880-81, we don't have a exact date. Rachel UNDERHILL and George W. SINGER, were in the 1880 Census for Ashland, but it's reported they left at that time, maybe just afterwards. Harvey and Anna SEYMORE UNDERHILL also left with them and Paris Cox, a Quaker minister, who took up to 200 people, all Quakers except for George who was a German Lutheran, to Estacado, Texas. From there they went to Lubbock, which George helped to found. Lots of history about him there. Then they all went up to Nesho Co. Kansas about 1890 something. My grandfather who was born in Estacado started a diary in 1889, at age 15, said they had lived in Nesho Co. for about 10 years I think. Andrew had left Texas before, the farming they went for just wasn't productive. George and Rachel had a trading post, and Paris Cox, died in Estacado, the other Quakers didn't stay as long and went back to Ohio and other parts. Jacob and Rachel were living with Harvey and Anna in 1850, but not in 1860, I think they must of died, as they were 64 and 66 years of age, but I haven't been able to find out where. Evidently it wasn't in the old Huron Co. I think Jacob sold or gave Harvey his land and when Harvey left for Texas he gave it to a Daniel UNDERHILL who I don't know. He is 10 years older than Harvey, but I don't have him as a brother. Next Daniel transfers the same land to a Charles and a Edgar UNDERHILL who must be his children. All this from 1861-80 as far as I can tell. It gets so confusing. There is a Benjamin too, and what I'm trying to do is see if there is a link as such. Is Benjamin Jacob's brother, and Benjamin had Daniel? Whereas Jacob had Harvey? So Harvey and Daniel are cousins? See what I mean? I was hoping for a easy answer, but perhaps there isn't one. Harvey was born in NY. That is in the Quaker records, and is buried where you said. The IGI is incorrect, it was placed there by Charles UNDERHILL's Gr.Grandson, the one you first mentioned along with Andrew. He got Sarah from out of the sky I believe. He hasn't responded to my letters, and it's a wonder he has any of it right, I don't think he researched very well, he has George and Rachel's wedding date off by some years. I think he was just interested in getting tied to Capt. John UNDERHILL, which we are, but didn't spend enough time checking his sources. I'm not sure just which county my Singers were in, as the lines changed as you said, and I think they were on the border and probably it moved around. Jacob b. 1846, Orange Twp., and Mary Singer were in Orange Twp. it looks like prior to 1900 and also Troy Twp. appears to be the same piece of property, I have a plat for 1900 & beyond from the Ashland Courthouse, so they must of become part of Ashland. I just don't know very much about him, only have him in one census of 1880 with his parents living with him and Mary, they are John and Catherine SINGER.

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- The only information I could find on this couple was in our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992. I checked all the other Huron County publications we own without success. Here is the marriage record- Jacob FORTRESS m. Julia Ann BLODGETT 19 Aug 1837. I did check the online IGI web site (www.familysearch.org/), and found an ancestral record for Jacob and Julia FORTRESS. This record shows their first born, Francis E. (Frank) FORTRESS was born in 1838 in Seneca County, OH, less than a year after their marriage. So the couple, if they had been living in Huron County, OH at the time of their marriage, apparently had moved from Huron to Seneca County, OH sometime in the period 1837-1838. The second born, Chloe Adelia FORTRESS, also was listed as born in Seneca County, OH in 1842. Their third child, Harmon G. FORTRESS was born in Medina County, OH in 1844. So it appears the family moved again , sometime 1842-1844, from Seneca County to Medina County, OH. The mother, Julia BLODGET FORTRESS, died in Medina County, OH in 1846, according to this ancestral record. Jacob FORTRESS died in Shiawasee County, MI in 1892.

I'm trying to learn more about one small cluster of relatives who were buried in Huron Co. Ohio. They are mainly listed on three pages of your book, pgs 15, 16 & 645. The two main surnames are NYE & HASKELL with one daughter marrying a CRAWFORD. I'm not sure which is the best way to do this. Most of the data I have collected so far is from either Bronson or Perus in Huron Co, so I'm guessing the cemetery is probably in one of those two towns. First I will list the names I found indexed for each page, and then I will list more information that I have on each person just in case that will aid in the identifying process. Page 15 - [NYE] - Alonzo; Elnora; A; M P; Moriah P; [CRAWFORD] - J H; John H. Page 16 - [HASKELL] - Prince [4]; Leah [2]; Harriet; Susanna. Page 645 - [CRAWFORD] - John H; Frances M NYE. My information on Alonzo NYE indicates he was born 14 Jan 1805 in Woodstock, Windsor, VT and died Sep 1884 in Bronson, Huron, OH. He married 06 Mar 1832 in Barnard, Windsor, VT to Maria POWERS HASKELL [aka Mariah/Moriah] b. 14 Jun 1805 in Barnard Windsor VT and died aft 1884 in Huron Co [prob Peru]. I was only aware of two daughters, the first, Lenora WILDER NYE, who was born 02 Dec 1835 and died 30 Jun 1892. And the second, being Frances Maria NYE who was born 04 Dec 1846 and who married on 03 Jul 1867 in Ohio to John H. CRAWFORD who was born on 08 Jan 1841. However there are gaps between the births of the two sisters and their two known brothers that would permit for another couple of siblings which might be the previously unknown "A." & "M.P." Maria/Mariah/Moriah's parents were the HASKELLs listed on page 16. Prince was born 26 Apr 1758 in Hardwick, Worcester, Massachusetts and died 23 Mar 1841 in Peru, Huron, OH. He married 04 Oct 1781 in Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts to Leah WILDER who was born 13 Jun 1762 in Hingham, Plymouth, MA and died 03 May 1848 in Perus, Huron, Ohio. They had ten other children besides Maria. Harriet was born 09 Jun 1786 in Barnard, Windsor, VT and died 23 Jul 1854. I have no idea who Susanna is at present.

The 1850 Ohio Census claims that Sarah and her parents both were born in the State of NY. Sarah GROW married Benjamin HOWE in 1835 in Huron County, OH. Since Benjamin HOWE was born in Genoa Twp, Cayuga County, NY, I thought maybe Sarah also might have been from Cayuga County, NY. Ken Shute Look Up Results - I couldn't find a specific location for the saw mill built by Levi SUTTON on Frink Run, in our Huron County, Ohio publications, but I did find some references that might be helpful in a general sense. They are- 1. History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879. Page 381. Section on Lyme Township. "Mr. (Levi) SUTTON built a saw mill on Frink run soon after his settlement. This was the first saw mill in the township, or for some miles around." "Hiel HUNT came to Ohio in 1816, remained at Venice (Seneca County) about two years, and assisted in building the first mills there." Page 389. Section on Lyme Township. "The first saw mill was built in the south part of the township on Frink run by Levi SUTTON in 1814 or 1815. 2. History of Huron County, Ohio, by A.J. Baughman, 1909. Vol. 1, Page 264. Section on Ridgefield Township. "Another stream flows from the southwest, and empties its water into the west branch, in Monroeville village. This is known as Frink run from the fact that William Frink was the first to build a habitation on its bank. Frink run and the west branch of the Huron river divide the township." 3. Just Like Old Times by Henry Timman, published originally in the Norwalk Reflector. Vol. 3, Page 130. "HUNT's Corners' most notorious resident," dated June 27, 1980. The article mentions that soon after his arrival (in Lyme Township), Levi SUTTON built a saw mill on Frink run, the stream south of HUNT's Corners. This was the first saw mill in Lyme Township. The article also mentions that HUNT's Corners was known also as SUTTON Settlement, the name "HUNT" coming from Heil HUNT who first came to Ohio in 1816. Vol. 2, Page 44. "Early Hunt's Corners," dated Dec. 12, 1975. This article mentions that Levi (SUTTON) built a saw mill on the creek known as Frink run (south of Rt. 547) not long after his arrival in Lyme township. I could find no information regarding the location of the schoolhouse at HUNT's Corners. I also could find no references to Horace Collins WAYMIRE after a search through all of our Huron County, Ohio publications. I did find a number of WAYMIREs cited in our Gateway to the West, by Bowers & Short, 1989, specifically in Montgomery County, Ohio. I don't know if these WAYMIREs could be related to yours, but here is what I found: Vol 2., Page 201. Montgomery County, Ohio Guardianships, 1826-1829. 3-3-1828. Does this same book list guardianships for other Ohio counties? I ask for two reasons- "Miss BRADLEY was a relative of the BRONSON family" is a quote from your earlier inquiry. Might Adam BRONSON be listed in this book somewhere as guardian of Marinda BRADLEY? And-Thomas Jefferson FARMER was described as "residing in Lancaster, OH" on Sep 4, 1866, when he was 14 years old, according to Civil War widow's pension papers filed by Antoinette FARMER. Is it possible someone had a guardianship of him, or do you supposed he was just "hired out"? Any light you can shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - Our Gateway to the West, in two volumes, covers 76 of Ohio's 88 counties ranging from Adams County to Wood County. Any given county may contain information in one or more of the following categories- common pleas court records; guardianships; naturalizations; deeds; birth/marriages/deaths; cemetery records; and wills. Thats the good news. The bad news is that the information shown in a given category is usually for a fairly brief period of time, often in only a one to five year "snapshot." The Huron County Kinologist, published by HCC/OGS, contains an Index of Early Huron County, Ohio Guardianships, Compiled by H. & M. Timman, in Volume 7, No. 1, continuing through Volume 7, No. 4. I checked this Index for any reference to Marinda BRADLEY or Thomas Jefferson FARMER without success. I also rechecked the Gateway to the West for these names, without any luck. Finally, I went back to our History of the Fire Lands to see if there were anything else that would identify the relationship between Marinda BRADLEY and the BRONSON family-but nothing.

After a lingering and painful illness, Philip Miller, a well known and highly respected pioneer farmer of Sherman township, died at his home Sunday evening, May 11th, at six o'clock, aged 71 years and nine months. The deceased had been in failing health since Easter and death was due to internal cancer. Mr. Miller was born in Germany and when a child of ten came to America with his parents in 1852. They located on a farm in Sherman township. Here he grew to manhood, and was married to Margaret Dehe in 1868. Mr. and Mrs. Miller first settled on a farm six miles south of Bellevue where they lived for six years, later purchasing the farm where the balance of their life was spent. Mr. Miller is survived by a widow, five sons and one daughter: Joseph, of Bellevue; Frank of Fostoria; Aloys of Franks; Andrew of Monroeville; Peter, at home and Mrs. Leo Gerber of Franks. I wish I could tell you his father's name but at this time I don't know it. I do know that he is buried along with his wife in St. Michael's Cemetery in Seneca Co. I would like to mention the other names I am researching, just in case someone out there may be researching them also. Most originate from Thompson and Reed Twp. of Seneca Co but I have seen bleed over to Sherman Twp and Lyme Twp in Huron Co. in my census research since they border on one another.

I am looking for information on one of my ancestors, Elias HUTCHINGS. According to other records, he was married 29 December, 1816 in Avery, Huron, Ohio. I have record that he married a Sarah (nicknamed Sally) SMITH. But other places say that he married a Sally SMITH, Sally COX, Sarah COX, or even Sarah Sally COX SMITH. Her mother's maiden name was COX, so I think COX could have been Sarah's middle name. I would really appreciate it if you could look their marriage up in your book, "Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900." It would be so helpful if there is a record of her name in there!

A long time ago you did a look-up for me on KERNER. I lost my web browser and the file. The piece I lost was about Adam KERNER. There are two Adam KERNER's that lived in Norwalk - brothers. I have a ton of information on Adam K. (butcher - 1859-1905; he died July 5th). What I lost was for his brother, who also died in 1905 - September. You had sent me something from a newspaper about the norwalk police department and how Adam was one of the three tallest officers. If you could resend this, I would sincerely appreciate it. My research is going very well. My big problems are regarding Adam KERNER, the policeman and his brother George, for whom I have nothing except an obituary reference from Adam K. KERNER. Adam K. had a son named George (1894-1967). The George I'm looking for this George's Uncle George, the brother of both Adams.

I could find no references to a George KERNER, Adam's brother. 1. Just Like Old Times by Henry Timman, published originally in the Norwalk Reflector. Book 6, Page 10, "Norwalk had a Sunday paper back in 1884," dated March 6, 1987. One paragraph mentions the weights of several men in the city administration of Norwalk in 1898. Among those were Marshall Leroy Burton, who weighed 170 pounds, and his three policemen: Adolphus Burton, Adam KERNER, and George Holmes who weighed 172, 200 and 210 pounds respectively. All these men were over six feet tall. Adolphus Burton and Adam KERNER were each 6' 4" tall. The item goes on to say that these men had to be big and threatening since they were often on patrol alone. 2. Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions, by HCC/OGS, 1997. I have a letter from my great grandmother, Betsey (SHEFFIELD) CAMPBELL, who mentions Theadore's marriage to Millie SANBORN on 31 Dec 1857 and then a letter dated 1861 in which she mentions that Theadore died last summer (i.e. 1860). Since she also lived in Lyme and wrote about him I assume that he is related to us, but I don't know how. I descended from Benjamin CAMPBELL, who died in Lyme in 1852. You have already sent me some information about Benjamin. I assume that Barney is the son of either Benjamin or one of his brothers- Hugh, Adam, David, or Thomas. She was b. ca. 1859 and d. ca. 1946 (this date may be incorrect). Elizabeth disappears from the city directory in Massillon. I wonder if she didn't die much earlier than 1946, or if she had family in your county and moved back there...which would explain why Moses was buried there. We Huron Co. Burgur MOTT researchers are having a problem and hope you can help us. There is a John MOTT in the 1870 Huron Co. census together with his wife, Helen, but it doesn't seem to be the John MOTT we think is a son of Burgur and Mary MOTT. This 1870 John MOTT was born in NY and according to the 1870 census, he would have been born in 1838, which would put him born 12 years after Burgur and Mary's last child, James Zalmon, and mother, Mary, would have been 53 - all possible but not too probable. One MOTT researcher seems to think that there is a John MOTT born 1823 in NY and lived in OH in 1850. Burgur MOTT (quaker) and his wife, Mary CARMAN, (wife not proven) are the parents of my Freelove MOTT, born 12 Dec 1811 in PA who married Jonathan Parker WOODWORTH, born 21 Nov 1805, in New London, Norwich Twp., CT. Note- if this is the same John MOTT as in the 1870 census above, then it appears he moved from Townsend township to Fairfield township where Burgur MOTT lived in 1870, and where Burger was buried. In checking the online IGI web site (www.familysearch.org) I found the following which might be of interest, if you're not already aware. Entering the name Freelove MOTT in the search box brings up the following marriage: Freelove MOTT, b. 12 Dec 1811; d. 12 Mar 1886, New Haven, Ohio, married Johnathon WOODWORTH 27 Oct 1828. Johnathon was born 7 Sep 1803 in NY. Of possible interest is that this item was submitted by Kevin Groenald, 4929 Quail Ave., Lime Springs, IA 52155-8344.
