Linda Look Up Results - I am not connected with UPDEGRAFFs, but I may have a hint of two. UPDEGRAFF, with this spelling, is an old Lorain Co name, and there were still many UPDEGRAFFs there in the 1960's. Lorain Co was created in 1822, and a large chunk of eastern Huron Co was made a part of Lorain Co. That ten year span between 1822 and 1833- Sounds like any county-line confusion should have been cleared up by then, But it all depends on where the IGI reference came from. If I were you, I would search Lorain Co records for the marriage in question.

I would like to ask for help in scanning the cemetery book for any reference to my 4th Great Grandparents and their family. They would have immigrated to Huron County in the period of 1812 to 1817 from New York State. I am wondering if you could look-up the FLICKINGER family in the 1845 Plat Book and in the Huron County, Ohio Marriages 1815-1900. Is the marriage book indexed for brides as well as grooms? The family I am searching consists of Nicholas FLICKINGER and his wife Rebecca (RICE) FLICKINGER. Their children are: William, Robert, Samuel, Benson, Louisa, Maria and George. Nicholas died in 1854 and Rebecca died in 1851. The children continued living in Ohio, however, all had relocated by 1880. I would be interested in anyone found with the surname FLICKINGER as they will, no doubt, be related.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I'm afraid I don't have anything definite that would tie in with your MCKENNEY forebears. In addition to what was found in the Cemetery Inscriptions book for Huron County, I found a few other references that might or might not relate to this line. You mention one MCKENNEY forebear who "died in and around Sandusky in 1817." Since I wasn't sure if this referred to the town of Sandusky in Erie County, or to Sandusky County, I checked the very few books we have for these two other counties, but without success. Here are the Huron County references- 1. Death Index, 1867-1908, Huron County, Ohio, by HCC/OGS, 1998. Clinton C. MCKENNEY d. 01/15/1901, Vol. 2, Page 145. 2. I am currently looking for a marriage record of Jonathan WAINWRIGHT to Pertina BLODGET on Oct, 16, 1834. All of the information that I have ever had stated that they were married in Lorain Co. However, I just had a letter from the Lorain Co. Probate Ct. and they do not have this info on record. I know that there were BLODGETs in Huron Co. as well. Can you help me out in any way? Thank you so very much. I don't get to your area very often because I live in Fla. and I have just started my research. I am related to this family (maybe) because they had a daughter named Mary who married James Washington LONG in Ottawa Co. Ohio.

I'm researching the Ohio origins of my grandmothers grandparents Mary E. MARTIN (d. of William W. MARTIN and Ruth LINTON) and Abraham KIRBY (native of Moulton, Lincolnshire, England). I found your list while stumbling around the Internet. I have a series of letters from my gg-grandmother Mary E. MARTIN to her fiancee Abraham KIRBY (written between 1864 and 1867, when they were married). Mary MARTIN was born in Vermillion, OH but the family then settled in Norwalk, Huron Cty. Mary MARTIN's gandparents (I'm not sure which ones) lived in Camden. The KIRBY family settled in Hudson, Summit Cty. The letters (about 50 of them) have brought me close enough to Norwalk, Townsend Station/Kent, Monroeville (where Mary MARTIN divided her time) and Toldeo (where Abraham KIRBY worked under Druggist Thomas DANIELS) that I have a lively desire to learn more about the towns and the people who lived there. I'm gathering together all of the names from the letters, if anyone is interested, but all references are fairly cursory. I look forward to learning more-and to hearing from anyone associated with the family branches listed below. (I have pictures of most of these people, but none, I think, of the Ohio environs.) Polly BENNETT (b. 29 Jan 1800 in NY, d. ?) m. Adam LINTON (b. 14 Feb 1785, d. ?) on 13 Jun 1819. Daut., Ruth LINTON (b. 9 Nov 1825 in NY, d. 5 Jun 1910). Ruth m. William W. MARTIN (b. 1822, d. Oct 1856 in Norwalk, OH) on 14 Nov 1842 or 15 Dec. 1843 in ?Seneca, OH. Children: 1. Marth(a) MARTIN, b. 7 Oct 1844, d. 21 Nov 1917, m. ? KILBURN 2. Mary E. MARTIN, b. 29 Sept 1846 (in Vermillion, OH), d. ?, m. Abraham KIRBY on ? Sept. 1867, in Norwalk, Huron Cty. 3. Ervada MARTIN, b. 2 Sept. 1848, d. Nov. 1848. 4. Emma S. Ken Shute Look Up Results - Ref. our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992- Mary Ann MESNARD m. John WOOD 14 Jun 1865. Ellen M. MESNARD m. Calvert A. MEAD 24 Mar 1857. (Ellen M. appears to be the sister of Mary Ann. See below.) In our History of Huron County, Ohio, by A.J. Baughman, 1909, Vol. 2, Page 74, there occurs a reference to Ellen MESNARD. It appears in a biographical sketch on Calvert A. MEAD. It mentions that Calvert MEAD married Ellen MESNARD in 1857. Ellen was born April 30, 1836. Her father, Eri MESNARD, was of French descent and served as standard county surveyor of Huron County for fourteen years. He surveyed the first railroad in the state of New York, and in early life engaged in teaching school in Ithaca, New York. He died in 1879; his wife died in 1881. There is a short biographical sketch on Eri MESNARD on page 153 (facing) in our History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879. The narrative is accompanied by a pen and ink drawing of Eri. The bio reads- "Eri MESNARD was born at Norwalk, Conn., Oct. 16, 1797. He moved with his father's family to Saratoga Co., N.Y., in the year 1806; thence, in 1818, to Onondaga Co., N.Y., where he married Lucy, daughter of Ebenezer HILL, in the year 1826. His wife died in 1830, and in 1835 he married, for his second wife, Harriet, daughter of Seth BAKER, of Lafayette, Onondaga Co., N.Y., and resided at Ithaca , N.Y., until 1836, when he moved to Fairfield, Huron Co., Ohio; thence, in 1843, to Norwalk, in said county, where he remained until the date of his death, Jan. 28, 1879, in the eighty-second year of his age. He was employed as civil engineer, about 1831, on the Ithaca and Owega Railroad, one of the first railroads built in the United States. He officiated as county surveyor of Huron County for fourteen years, and did more or less surveying during all the yeas of his residency in Ohio, though he made farming his principal occupation, being proprietor of the fine farm now owned by his son, Capt., L.B. MESNARD, and located two miles south of Norwalk..He leaves a son and three daughters, all residents of Huron County."

The Mary Ann BROWN that died Nov 7, 1905 in Huron County may be the answer to my question. She would fit the time line. Would there be any way of knowing if that was a baby or very young child?-that Mary Ann BROWN. Would there be a record of the Cemetery she is in? I could write to get the death cert on her if you do not have it in your books. Let me know. Would there be any "Infant" BROWN deaths in Huron County between 1895-1911? Perhaps Ira Augustus was recorded as "Infant" or "Boy" BROWN.

I am looking for early info on Ebenezer DUNTON. He was in Peru Township until about 1850-60 at which time he was in Huntington County, Indiana. The information I have- he married Cornelia ASHLEY. His children were Stephen, William, Alida, Oscar, and Ella. Stephen, the first child, was born in 1826 in Huron Couty, Ohio. The 1830 & 1840 Census list Ebenezer in Huron County. The 1850 Census lists him as being in Peru Township, Huron County, and his birthplace as Vermont. Ebenezer was born 15 Dec 1799. Any light you can shed on him would be greatly appreciated.

Ken Shute Look Up Results-- I found several references to a Dr. Waitstill HASTINGS and family in our Huron/Erie County, Ohio publications. They are- 1. History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879. Page 466. Section on Oxford Township, Erie County, Ohio. Mentions that Dr. Waitsell HASTINGS, Thomas Hamilton, and John Dillingham settled at Bloomingville. Page 468. Section on Oxford Township. Under heading of Physicians. States "The first doctor to locate in the township was Waitsell HASTINGS who came.....in 1811. He eventually removed to near Parkerton, in Groton Township, where he died a few years since." 2. Just Like Old Times by Henry Timman, published originally in the Norwalk Reflector. Book III, page 92, article titled "They Kept Going West," dated Oct. 5, 1979. This describes Lansford HASTINGS of Groton Township, Erie County, as an early western guide and explorer. Lansford was the son of Dr. Waitstill HASTINGS, pioneer physician and justice of the peace in (Groton) township. The article conjectures that Hastings, Nebraska may have taken its name from Lansford Hastings. Book I, page 43, "Doctors of the Fire Lands," dated Jan. 26, 1973. This article describes Waitstill HASTINGS, who settled in or near Bloomingville, Erie County, Ohio in 1811, as one of the first physicians in the Firelands. Book V, page 146, "Local Man Wrote Ill-fated Guidebook," dated Oct. 17, 1986. Lansford W. HASTINGS is described as the author of an emigrant's guide to Oregon and California. It was published in 1845. In it he describes the route to California--known as the Hastings cutoff-- that the ill-fated Donner party later took in the winter of 1846-47. It also identifies Lansford HASTINGS as the son of Dr. Waitstill HASTINGS and his wife Lucinda WOOD HASTINGS. Dr. HASTINGS was the pioneer physician in the Bloomingville and Parkertown area in western Erie County, Ohio, having settled there in 1811. Waitstill and Lucinda HASTINGS lived out their days in Erie County, and Waitstill died there about the time of the Civil War. It is thought that Waitstill and Lucinda are buried with other family members in the DeYo- Bolles Cemetery on Portland Road near the Pickett Cherry farm south of Castalia. The rest of this article is essentially a biographical sketch of Lansford W. HASTINGS. 3. Erie County, Ohio, Cemetery Census Before 1909, by the Erie County Cemetry Project Volunteers, 1989. Oakland Cemetery, Perkins Township. Page 465. Lists Waitstill G. HASTINGS b. 1826 d. 1892. (But obviously not the same person as Dr. Waistill HASTINGS because of the later birth year.) DeYo-Bolles Cemetery, Groton Township. Page 103. Lists Amanda D. HASTINGS, d. Sept. 13, 1864, d/o N. HASTINGS, and James H. HASTINGS, d. Unfortunately, there's no every- name index for this book, so you have to search each township in turn, and each cemetery within each township for the person you're looking for. The names are alphabetized only within each cemetery. The Erie County Cemetery book did list a KERSHNER in the DeYo-Bolles Cemetery, Groton Twp, Erie County- Page 103. Elizabeth C. KERSHNER b. 1839 d. 1894. Our Huron County Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheur Publications, 1992, gives the following marriage- Ephraim HASTINGS m. Sally PARKER 8 May 1825. Finally, our History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879, gives the following reference to Ephraim HASTINGS- Page 454. Section on Groton Township, Erie County, Ohio. Under "Organization" Mentions the first officers of the township were elected on June 2, 1834. It is dated Oct. 1, 1982, and can be found in Book IV, Page 92. The article mentions that the West Hartland United Methodist Church, southeast of Norwalk, is celebrating 150 years of continued existence. The original congregation was organized in 1832 by Rev. Leonard HILL. It goes on to state that the present church building was dedicated in 1873. In 1871, a George W. MANAHAN donated land for church use on which the West Hartland (United Methodist) Church now stands. Finally, it mentions that the Sunday School at West Hartland was organized by Rev. True PATEE in 1834, and has continued until this day as one of the oldest continuing Sunday Schools. Perhaps this clears up the denomination of the church you're seeking.

I am looking for any information on a D.E. CHAFFEE, or any other CHAFFEE, who belonged to this church. I am trying to link my Mary Jane CHAFFEE to who her parents were. She was born January 13, 1840 in Hartland, Huron County, Ohio. She married George Walace PATCHER/ PATCHEN December 12, 1860. George was born September 24, 1838 in NY and died November 19, 1909. I don't have her parents or siblings nor George's. I found record of a D.E. who might possibly be Mary Jane's brother and Calvin O. their father. Just a wild guess though. Does anyone have the 1850 census that could check to see if there were CHAFFEEs there, or even 1860? She should've been there with her family in 1860 since she didn't marry until December of 1860.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I could not find your Martha KERSHNER HASTINGS, nor your Ephraim and Sally HASTINGS, in our Erie County, Ohio Cemetery Census Before 1909, by the Erie County Cemetery Project Volunteers, 1989. Unfortunately, there's no every-name index for this book, so you have to search each township in turn, and each cemetery within each township for the person you're looking for. Only seven men living in the township at present (1879) were at this election and were old enough to vote. These seven included the name of Ephraim HASTINGS.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I was unable to find any information that would prove, or disprove, that Jane and Susan CURTISS were sisters. Here are a few references that appear to relate to these families, which might be of future help in answering this question- 1. Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992. Ken Shute Look Up Results -I checked all of our Huron County, Ohio publications, and could find only two references to Volney James WARD. There was no listing of this name in the Cemetery Inscriptions book. 1. Death Index, 1867-1908, Huron County, Ohio, by HCC/OGS, 1998. Volney Ward d. 12/11/1891 Vol. 1, Page 176. 2. 1880 Census Index, Huron County, Ohio, by HCC/OGS. Volney Ward, Fairfield Twp, 037. I imagine you already have this following information, but when I checked the IGI online web site (www.familysearch. org), there were quite a few references to Volney James WARD. The gist I got was that- a. He was born 16 Apr 1816 in Rochester, Monroe, New York. b. His parents were Jedediah WARD and Catherine GAYLORD, and c. He appeared to have been married up to five times- namely Married 1840 to Matilda SCOTT, Mercer, Mercer, Pennsylvania. Married Eliza Ann MCCOMBS 4 May 1842, Niles, Trumbull, Ohio. Married Rachel HORNBROOK (or DILLON) 4 Jul 1855, Wheeling, Ohio, Virginia. Married Hannah FADIS 1857, Enon Valley, Lawrence, Pennsylvania. Married Mattie A. BLAIN 18 Feb 1883, Monroe, Green, Wisconsin. (In this latter case he was listed as Volney J. WARD instead of Volney James WARD.) This is assuming all references to a Volney James WARD as the spouse in these marriages were references to one and the same person. If this is the case, and considering the territory covered, it would seem Volney was not only a fast stepper but a fast mover.

Silas (and Rebecca) WOOLEY (children- Aaron, William, Joel, Asahel, maybe one other). They came to Ohio from Tompkins Cty, NY in 1835-1850 and ended up in Ruggles township. About five years ago in the Ohio State Library in Columbus, I found some DAR recordings of Huron County marriage records. I have some reason to question one of the entries- Silas WOOLEY m. Betsy Ann MEAD 3/15/1856. There is another source that says he married Betsy Ann WOOLVERTON. If you can check that, that would be great. And if you would be further willing to give me all the WOOLEY (or WOOLLEY) marriages that would be awesome.

I believe Sherman FRAZIER is buried in the Norwalk Cemetery. I am also looking for his brother Daniel FRAZIER and Daniel's wife Eliza. I do not know where they are buried and thought I could perhaps find more details by locating Sherman's obit. if I can find dates of death.
