I saw the Huron Co cemetery listings, and ran across a lot of KNAUSS names.. I'm very interested in the names listed underpage 224. They are John G., Henry S., Ellen, Catherine, Rosa R., and William. These are familiar names in my family tree. I would be interested in knowing the dates on the tombstones, and anything else you might know about this family. I have ancestors in Tuscarawas Co., and others who migrated from PA>OH>IN. Some I can not account for there disappearence to who knows where. Can you help me?

Does anyone have any information at all on Thomas KNAPP who went to Ohio in the 1820s or 1830s? He was the father of Sumner, Arvilla, and Chandler KNAPP who all played important roles in the early development of Huron County. They lived in the Lakeside area which later became Ottawa Co. Sumner m Deborah SHERLY, Arvilla m Henry WOLCOTT and Jarad KEYES and Chandler married (sis?) Sophia SHERLY and Mary DWELLY. I have been able to find nothing on Thomas and his wife Mary(?) SANFORD. They came from Stockbridge, Windsor, VT by way of NY. I would appreciate any help or advice.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - Here are my findings on your first three STARRs, from our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992. I could not find any reference to the marriage of Sarah STARR to a James EASTER in our book. However, I did find three marriages of James EASTER, namely- James EASTER m, Bridget BALLENTINE 26 Jul 1854. James EASTER m. Deborah HOWARD 4 Apr 1838. James EASTER m. Martha PLACE 4 Jul 1846. Our Cemetery Inscriptions book gives an inscription which indicates a "Sarah EASTER" was the wife of a James EASTER." Details- Steuben Cemetery, Greenfield Township. Page 135. Question regarding Sarah STARR and James EASTER. Since the cemetery records indicate they were married, does that mean they were married outside Huron County? Here are the next five STARRs. Incidentally, my family members resided in Greenfield Township for the most part. 4. 1849 Permelia Ann STARR m. James ARMSTRONG 5. 1850 Stephen Howard STARR m. Sarah Ann WESTFALL 6. 1854 Jane Elizabeth STARR m. Homer ASHLEY 7. 1855 Matthew MCKELVY STARR m. Loviah ARTHUR 8. 1856 Abraham DUBOIS STARR m. Mary Anna TEEGARDEN I am very, very interested in numbers 6 and 7 since they are listed as leaving Ohio for California with my Great Grandmother, Alvira Mercy STARR TOMPKINS. If there is any other information about these two, I would really appreciate knowing it. In Alvira's Memorium, it mentions she came to California with Matthew and Jane. I cannot find any additional information about Matthew and his family in California. Jane Ashley is mentioned in Alvira's Obit as living in Yuba City, Sutter Co, CA. I have not been able to find out anything more about her. Neither Matthew or Homer show up in any of the California Census records.

I'm looking for information on a couple, Carlton B. GAW and his wife, Maria MARTIN. According to a DAR transcription of Huron County marriages, they were married Feb. 15, 1825. That is about all I have on them. The 1850 Ohio Census shows their children as W. B., Jason, Carlton B. Jr., Ritta, David, Dennis, Sarah Ann, Haadley, and Henry. If your histories of marriage records could help me move closer to their (Carlton B. and Maria) parentage or stories about them, I'd appreciate it.

I just ran across some old postals (post cards) that were addressed to and kept by my grandmother. Two of the postals were from Norwalk, OH and Chicago Junction, OH in 1914. The sender was my grandmother's cousin Cami BRANDT or BRANT. Are there any directories that cover this period of time? I'm guessing that this Cami BRANT or BRANDT is a relative from my STARR connection in Greenfield Twp, Huron Co, but I cannot be sure.

Highlights of several paragraphs- Charles B. NIVER came to Norwich Township from Seneca County, New York in the spring of 1833. After building a log house on lot 12, he returned east for his family and arrived back in Norwich about 20 Sep 1833. His wife's name was Emily MOORE. Charles B. and Emily had five children- Laura Jane who married Edward KNAPP (Laura now--1879--deceased; Marvin who lives at home; John who married Thalia REED (John now deceased); Albert E. who married Etta GREEN and lives in the west part of the original homestead; and Mary who remains at home. The first wife of Charles B. NIVER is deceased (as of 1879). His second wife was Prudence DOUGLASS. John NIVER, a brother of Charles B. NIVER came to Ohio with his family, stayed about one year, then returned East. After 2-3 years, John came back to Norwich Township, married Sarah WHITE, and settled on the south part of the original purchase where he still resides with his second wife. John has seven children. So after John settled in Norwich, another brother to Charles B., named Dennis, came to Norwich. His wife was Marietta PARSONS. Dennis settled on the eastern part of the tract where he still lives (1879). He has nine children. Page 100. Military Roster section, Civil War. John M. I am interested in getting my grubby little paws on a photocopy of the plat map, but first I suppose I'd better make sure my illustrious forebears actually held land! There may be several persons, so I'll give you the surname, and the manglings and bastardizations that it may have gone through- WHITRIGHT/WHITWRIGHT/WITRIGHT/WITWRIGHT. I don't think there should be any other tanglings of it. In addition, perhaps you have a Leon TRUXEL named as an owner? He's the husband of Lizzie WHITRIGHT, one of the siblings that will be mentioned (hopefully!).

I learned that the first foreign migration to Huron County were Germans who began arriving in 1828 and were from Alsace And Baden. My great-grandfather was one of them. He came from Alsace in 1829. Settled in Bronson /Peru Township. I have already been to the Norwalk Library and found nothing. My question is what library in the area would be the best to check this out? I know he came in 1829 because when he applied for his citizenship in Norwalk on October 12, 1840 he said that's when he arrived in New York. How can I find out more on Frank Joseph HERRMANN in this area? He was only 17 when he arrived.

Ken Shute Look Up Result-- Henry Timman, in his Just Like Old Times, published originally in the Norwalk Reflector, wrote an article that describes a tragic accident that befell Charles BRADY in 1824, Greenwich Township, Huron County, Ohio. The article is entitled "The Kniffens of Early Greenwich, " dated Feb. 24, 1984, and is found in Book V, page 8. The article mentions that Charity KNIFFEN, sister of Benjamin KNIFFEN, married Charles BRADY of Salem, Westchester County, N.Y.The BRADYs had moved from Salem to Cayuga County, N.Y., then came west with the KNIFFENs in 1824. On Dec. 18, 1824, Charles BRADY went with Benjamin KNIFFEN to deliver a load of grain to be ground at the Washburn mill, in the northeast corner of Greenwich. Brady had put his loaded rifle on top of the load of grain. During the trip to the mill he pulled the loaded gun toward him and it discharged, killing him instantly. Benjamin KNIFFEN returned alone to the settlement where the body was taken for a funeral service at the Center for assistance, apparently the same day. Charity BRADY was left alone with a family of small children, but their farm was a gift from her father and thus paid for. Charity BRADY subsequently married Daniel OSBORN, member of the Alum Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends in Morrow County, and died there in 1872, at the age of 80. In our History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879, the same basic story is seen in the section on Greenwich Township, page 342, but it doesn't have all the detail that the Timman article has. It does mention that in 1823, Charles BRADY, who married Charity KNIFFEN, came from Westchester County, New York to Scipio, Cayuga County, where he remained until 1824 when he came with the KNIFFINS to Greenwich Township, Huron County, Ohio. Finally, our Early Estate Index for Huron County, Ohio, 1812-1852, by HCC/OGS, 1992, gives the following information on the estate of Charles BRADY- Charles BRADY, Estate, March 1825, /BRADLEY. I picked up what appears to be a Jacob STERNER family in the 1870 Census of Huron County. Included in this cluster is an Ella STERNER, age 5. I have recently discovered KOENIG cousins, and, the finding of a six page KOENIG genealogy manuscript has turned my search back to Norwalk, Ohio. During past research with this list, and the web site, I have verified that Fred KOENIG and presumed second wife, Ida, along with children Charles, William and Catherine were listed in the 1900 census, that Catherine was born in Norwalk, April 9, 1895, and that Charles, William and Catherine's mother, Sophia, died in 1897 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. Since that time, the new material has focused on August KOENIG, father of Fred and six others, and his wife Johanna (KOCH) KOENIG. Both came from Germany and resided in Albany, NY, where all children were born; however, the following has been recorded which requires further research -- Johanna KOCH born May 5, 1840 in Germany, died April 15, 1918, in Detroit, Mich but buried in Norwalk, Ohio. Married to August KOENIG. August KOENIG came to US about 1854 and lived in Albany, NY probably until at least 1875 as he is listed in directories. Listed in 1860 Census as Agust KONIG. It is not known when he and Johanna moved to Norwalk, but he apparently worked at the A B Chase Piano Facory in Norwalk Ohio and lived next door to the Lutheran Church in Norwalk which had Pastor Rehn. He was supposedly buried July 9, 1903 at age 76 in Woodlawn Cemetery Norwalk, although not listed in the online index. Three points of query - first, is there any readily available information on the A B Chase Piano Factory; second, can anyone identify the mentioned Lutheran Church; and third, August and Johanna should be listed in the 1900 census.

In the Six-Book Set, Just Like Old Times, by Henry Timman, originally published in the Norwalk Reflector, there are a number of references to the A.B. Chase Piano Company, a few references to the (German) Lutheran Church, and no references that I could find to August KOENIG. These are the books and pages containing the references to the A.B. Chase Piano Company: Book 1, pages 134, 137, 141. Book 2, pages 3, 38. Book 3, pages 46, 93, 122. Book 4, pages 144, 152, 153. Book 5, page 30. Book 6, pages 4, 7, 18, 39, 137. Most of these references to the A.B. Chase Company are fairly brief, within the context of the article appearing on the page. However, in Book 2, page 3, the entire article is devoted to the A. B. Chase (Piano) Company. It is entitled "A.B. Chase Company," and dated Jan. 17, 1975. These are the books and pages containing references to the (German) Lutheran Church. Again, these references are somewhat brief. Book 1, page 121. Book 2, page 22. Book 3, page 101. Book 4, page 19 . (Contains some early history and evolution). I believe there are some copyright considerations here, but you might have several options if you wanted to see these Books in the Just Like Old Time series; 1. You could try for an interlibrary loan before your visit to Norwalk. 2. You could write to Henry Timman to see if he still has any of these six books for sale. 3. You could visit the Norwalk Public Library upon arrival and see them there. They are reported as holding a set of Just Like Old Times. One other note-- regarding August KOENIG- I found two publications in which another researcher showed an interest in this same KOENIG. . Her name is Joyce H. Godward, 3607 Main Street, #43, Springfield. OR 97478-6489. The first publication was the Huron County Kinologist, Vol. 10, N0. 1, Spring 1995, page 5. Under the heading "Lost Ancestors," the query reads: "KOENIG-- Desire info on August KOENIG b. 1829 Prussia. Worked with son Theodore L. KOENIG at A.B. Chase Piano Company, Norwalk, OH in late 1800s." The second publication was the 1996 Ancestral Card File Index, by HCC/OGS. Ancestral Names of Interest: August KOENIG, Theodore Ludwig KOENIG. HCC/OGS member submitting names (#380)-- Joyce Godward, etc. as above. If you haven't already been in touch with Joyce Godward, it might be worth contacting her.

Ken Shute Lookup Results--From what I've read, the main cholera epidemics were in 1832, 1834, 1849 and 1854, a good bit earlier than 1891. I have no information on typhoid or other epidemics in the area. However, if you wanted to pursue this, you could ask for the death certificates of Andrew and Ella May KOLB. This might give you clues as to the causes of death. You could also check the newspaper obits for these two for supplementary information. For the death certificates, contact the Probate Court, Huron County, Ohio Courthouse, 2 E. Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. As reported earlier, the death records for both Andrew and Ella May are contained in Vol. 1, Page 175. I'm not sure, but the Norwalk Public Library may also have death record information. You could confirm this with Debbie Orth whose email address is [email protected]. The Norwalk Public Library also holds microfilm on various newspapers over the years. Covering the period in question (1891) is the Norwalk Weekly Reflector (26 Jul 1853- 25 Dec 1894), and the Norwalk Daily Reflector (22 Sep 1882- 25 Jan 1913). The Huron County Chapter, OGS (HCC/OGS) offers a service whereby volunteers in the general area of Norwalk will check records at the courthouse, libraries, etc. for information requested by researchers. You could request this service in checking the obits in the newspaper holdings of the Norwalk Public Library. Details on this volunteer service, as well as the holdings of the Courthouse and Norwalk Library, among other resources in the Norwalk area, can be found on the HCC/OGS home page at www. rootsweb.com/~ohhuron). If the close following in death of Andrew after Ella's death still remains inexplicable, then perhaps Louise's offering is a good one.

I need another lookup about the SHIPMAN clan. Sarah SHIPMAN was supposed to have been born in 1861 to Elizabeth and Anthony, of Clarksfield, OH. I haven't found a birth record of her. Also she seems to disappear after the 1870 census, but I found reference to Irene SHIPMAN in one of the biographies, and of having married J.J. MCCALEB in 1877, then in 1908 she is named in Elizabeth's obituary as the daughter, Irene VANSICKLE of New London. Can you check and see if there are marriages listed for Irene MCCALEB to ? VANSICKLE between 1877 and 1908. If there are any records of her, could she possibly be the same person as Sarah? I have found no connection, yet one disappears and one appears. The Biographies and Obits all state they had only three children, yet I know of a fourth who was Sherrick K. b. 1904, Clarksfield, d. 1906. However, I can account for three boys and only one girl. Please help me solve this mystery if you can.

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- It would seem that Sarah and Irene SHIPMAN might have been one and the same person. The clue is given in the marriage of Lyman VANSICLES where the record shows the bride's name as Mrs. Sarah Iren (sic) MCCALEB. The "Iren" could very well have been a corruption for "Irene." If so, Sarah may have gone by this middle name. An Irene SHIPMAN m. a J.J. MCCALEB 11 Oct 1877. A John J. K. I have a marriage that I have found and there seems to be some mix-up somewhere. Isaac CLOSSON (my line) married Henrietta UPDEGRAFF and they lived in Dekalb County Ind. in 1840 throught 1850. Here is the problem, I have found at least 15 different ways that her name is spelled and it's really confusing. On this marriage that I found, it says Hettie. Now I know that is no doubt a knickname for Henrietta, but...after the name Hettie, it says Able and then DEGRAFF. It was April 23, 1833, in Huron county. I would really really appreciate it if you could help me clear this up somehow. Isaac's parents were John and Jane CLOSSON of Ashland county, if that helps any.

I also checked our other Huron County, Ohio publications for any references to either of these two without success. I found the marriage you cited only in the online IGI web site: www.familysearch.org. I have a marriage that I have found and there seems to be some mix-up somewhere. Isaac CLOSSON (my line) married Henrietta UPDEGRAFF and they lived in Dekalb County Ind. in 1840 through 1850. Here is the problem, I have found at least 15 different ways that her name is spelled and it's really confusing. On this marriage that I found, it says Hettie. Now I know that is no doubt a knickname for Henrietta, but after the name Hettie, it says ABLE and then DEGRAFF. It was April 23, 1833, in Huron county. I would really really appreciate it if you could help me clear this up somehow. Isaac's parents were John and Jane CLOSSON of Ashland county, if that helps any.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to help you with the spelling of Miss UPDEGRAF's first name. I could find no reference to the marriage of Isaac CLOSSON to Henrietta UPDEGRAF in our Marriage Book. I also checked our other Huron County, Ohio publications for any references to either of these two without success. I found the marriage you cited only in the online IGI web site www.familysearch.org. In this case, Miss UPDEGRAFF's first name was given as "Helly"-number 16 in the different ways you've seen it spelled. (Presumably, "Helly" here is a corruption for Hetty or Hettie?)
