Ken Shute Look Up Results-- The only references I could find to your BRADLEYs in our Huron County, Ohio publications were to Leverett BRADLEY. He and his wife are mentioned in a cemetery inscription for their young daughter Mary, who died in 1832 at age two. From the few references to Leverett, it appears he was fairly active in the political, business, and social fabric of early Norwalk, Ohio. Details- 1. Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions, by HCC/OGS, 1997. St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetry, Norwalk Township. Page 546. 303. Mary BRADLEY d/o Leverett & Maria BRADLEY, d. 17 May 1832, age 2y 1m 24d; "Alas how changed that lovely flower." 2. 1845 Plat Book, Huron County, Ohio. Leverett BRADLEY, New Haven Twp, page 68, section 4 NW, 6.5 acres; Ripley Twp, page 69, section 1, lot 23, 39 acres; section 1, lot 37, 31 acres. 3. History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879. Page 119. Section on Norwalk Township. In a census of 1827 made by the county assessor, Leverett BRADLEY is listed among 131 white, male inhabitants over the age of 21 residing in Norwalk Township. Page 139. Section on Norwalk Township. The first book of record of the corporation of Norwalk, including the poll book and tally sheet of the first election held for Norwalk as an incorporated village on 5 May 1828, lists Leverett BRADLEY as one of 60 electors. Leverett BRADLEY ran for the office of Recorder and received 37 votes, winning over a John V. Vredenburgh who received 30 votes. History of Huron County, Ohio, by A.J. Baugh, man, 1909. Vol.1- Page 81. "In the museum of the Firelands Historical Society may be seen a catalogue of the officers and students of Norwalk Academy under date of March 17, 1829. Article: "Daniel Mallory was in Norwalk for 20 Years," dated July 11, 1986. The article mentions that Mr. (Daniel) Mallory of Norwalk was a partner of Daniel Watrous in the Watrous Foundry, and also had an interest in Leverett BRADLEY's distillery, sawmill and blacksmith shop at the foot of South Pleasant Street where the Lais Brewery was later located. Book 2- Page 29. Article: "Fight Against Cholera," dated Aug. 29, 1975. The first Board of Health for Huron County, Ohio which set out to ward off the Asiatic Cholera, ca 1832, consisted of 10 members, one of whom was Leverett BRADLEY of Norwalk. Several other articles by Henry Timman refer to the election of Leverett BRADLEY as Recorder of Norwalk Village on 5 May 1826.

Looking for a marriage record for an Eliza DOWN marrying anyone about 1852-1860? She is my gg grandmother's sister and supposedly came with them from England. The family lived in Bellvue for the first few years, then on to MO. Eliza didn't come with them to MO. I thought she may have married during the years in OH and stayed there. My gg grandparents were William TUCKER and Selina DOWN, his wife. At least 2 of their children are buried in OH. Thank you for your kind offer to look things up for people.

I am looking for the marriage records for couples that resided in Plymouth/Cass Township in nearby Richland County that do not appear to be recorded there. If someone has a marriage book for Huron County, I would appreciate the following lookups for the children of James DOUGLASS (also spelled DOUGLAS-DUGLAS-DOGLESS)- DOUGLASS, Hannah to Abraham WILSON, married circa 1820-1830 (I think prob. 1826-1829) DOUGLASS, David to Ann/Anne/Anna KIRKLAND/KIRTLAND, possibly 12 Dec. 1832 DOUGLASS, Margaret to John FORD (1 of 2 husbands), after 1825 DOUGLASS, Margaret to William BUCK (1 of 2 husbands), after 1825

I found a Rospehine BLAND (not Josephine) in a cemetery book for Huron County at one time, and am wondering if anyone could look it up again for me. I think it was in Lyme Township, if there is such a place. I am also looking for death records for Mary Elizabeth BLAND and Boyd BLAND, who may have been her parents. I was told they died in Bellevue in the 1930s. Would Bellevue be in Huron County or Sandusky County records? Mary was born in Chicago Junction, Huron County, Ohio, per her fathers will.

I found a tiny bit of info on one Stephen B. KNAPP of Hartland and Bronson. Stephen B. KNAPP settled in Huron Co about 1833 (poss Bronson twp) and he died ca 1840's. Stephen B. KNAPP -m-1 Hannah, -m-2 Sally SMITH (no dates or places) Children of Stephen B. KNAPP- 1. Betsey KNAPP wife of Jacob G. MONTROSS (Their children - Griffin, Joseph, Susan and Catherine). 2. Laura Knapp wife of James FROST. 3. Brundage KNAPP, died bef 1850, his widow Nancy, m2 John MORSE (The children of Brundage and Nancy were Mary E. KNAPP -m- George ROUND, Laura J.KNAPP -m- David SLAWSON, Almira KNAPP -m- Mordacai WELSH, and Brundage KNAPP Jr. who died in the Civil War. 4. Jonathan KNAPP -m- Dorcas WARREN in 1818, they were from Putnam Co., NY. 5. Ethan KNAPP. This family has to connect to my Brundage KNAPP b 1773 Putnam Co., NY, died 27 March 1866, buried Fitchville Cemetery Huron Co., OH. Stephen B. KNAPP came to Huron Co with Andrew BISHOP, my Brundage KNAPP's first wife was Lydda/Lydia BISHOP. Jonathan KNAPP and my Brundage KNAPP 1773-1866, both from Putnam Co., NY. (Putnam Co., later became Westchester Co.,) Stephen B. KNAPP named his son Brundage. Brundage KNAPP 1773 -m-3 Esther MEAD, Edmund W. MEAD and wife Rachel KNAPP witnessed a deed for Stephen KNAPP in 1831 Huron Co., OH and Edmund W. MEAD was later appointed guardian of the MONTROSS children. (I also believe this Edmund W. MEAD 1788-1876 is somehow connected to my Esther MEAD, wife of Brundage KNAPP, but have found nothing on the MEAD's yet. With so few dates and places it is very difficult indeed, but given the tiny tidbits gathered so far I believe it is possible to put together a history of one or two families of Huron Co's early settlers.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I don't know if this will help or not, but I did locate a marriage for a Frank HOLLERBACK in 1874, the same year you say your Frank HOLLERBACK was born. From our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, by Scheuer Publications, 1992- Frank HOLLERBACK m. Emma DIDOR 27 Jan 1874, Book 2, Page 381. If you thought there might be a tie-in, you could request a copy of the marriage record from the Probate Court, Huron County Courthouse, 2 E. Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio 44857. For more details, go to the Huron County Courthouse link on the HCC/OGS home page (sites.rootsweb.com/~ohhuron).

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I could find only a few references to Stephen KNAPP in our Huron County, Ohio books- a marriage (probably not your Stephen because this marriage occurred after the time --1840's--when you said your Stephen died), land ownership in Hartland Township with three of his sons, and his first arrival in Hartland Township. 1. Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992. Stephen KNAPP m. Avis C. WOLOVER 21 Mar 1852. 2. Plat Book of 1845, Huron County, Ohio. The children all married in the early 1830s- Sumner to Deborah SHIRLEY, Chandler to (1) Sophia SHERLY, (sisters?) (2) Mary DWELLY, and Arvilla to (1) Wm WOLCOTT, (2) Jarad KEYES. Chandler (my 3rd gt-gf) was a ship's captain and owned schooners Josephine and Eugenia and he also owned the KNAPP Front on Sandusky Bay. That may have been an inn, but I really don't know.

I am seeking help with a brick wall. I am not sure whether I should be posting to Erie or Huron so am doing both. Hannah CHERRY TUPPER's parents both died in Huron County and there was a Sheriff TUPPER of Huron County (see below). Charles E. TUPPER was born in Venice, Erie County, OH, 8 Oct 1824. His father was Isaac TUPPER who was married to Hannah CHERRY. I have not been able to trace the TUPPERs back from Charles. In the TUPPER book prepared on TUPPERs of US and Canada, these TUPPERs stop here, too. Any help would be deeply appreciated. I just do not know from where these TUPPERs came. A couple of things I do know from some CHERRY notes someone kindly sent me- 1817 TUPPER bought lot 25-28 & 35 in Milan from Ebenezer MERRY. 1818 he and his wife sell lot 25 to her brother John CHERRY, and other lots to his brother or father Jacob TUPPER. He and Hannah sell another lot to David HINMAN and lot 35 back to Ebenezer MERRY. The notes say they are on the 1820 census and Jacob is living in Norwich Twp. In 1824 Jacob is dead. These notes also say that in a publication called William's History Huron And Erie Counties (pp. 130-131) there is a sheriff of Huron Co., named Lieut. Charles C. TUPPER. Henry CHERRY (b. 1758; d. 5 Mar 1820 Milan, Huron Co., OH) and his wife Abagail WILLIS (Oct 1758; d. 30 Nov 1844 Milan, Huron Co., OH) were the parents of Hannah CHERRY TUPPER.

I am trying to trace relatives of Susan Ann WOLAVER (born 1803), who lived in Huron County for most of the period 1823+/- to 1855+/-. Stephen KNAPP may be a link. Here's what I have- There is a record of a woman named Avis C. WOLOVER [sic], born ___, died ___, who was married on 3/21/1852 to Stephen KNAPP in Huron County, Ohio. Assuming Avis married in her twenties, her birth date would have been in the late 1820s or early 1830s, which would likely make her one generation younger than Susan, perhaps a niece? Susan Ann appears to have had two brothers with the surname WOLAVER/WOOLEVER - Jacob H. WOLAVER/WOOLEVER, born about 1798, and George WOOLEVER, born about 1800. Jacob and family lived in Huron County for many years. I do not know where George lived. Jacob and Susan Ann came to Huron County in 1823 with their mother (Mary Elizabeth HAUER WOOLEVER HOLLENBECK NYMAN) and stepfather, John NYMAN. I would appreciate any info. the Huron County Chapter can provide about Jacob H. WOOLEVER/WOLAVER, Susan Ann WOOLEVER/WOLAVER, and George WOOLEVER. Among other things, I am interested in whether Avis C. WOLOVER [sic] is a child of Jacob or George.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - There was a prominent Samuel MEEK family in Ripley Twp, Sandusky County, Ohio, according to a few books we own on Sandusky County. In case he's your guy, I'll pass on the gist of what I found- 1. Twentieth Century History of Sandusky County, Ohio by Basil Meek, 1909. Page 912. In a biography of a George MEEK, there is a reference to a Samuel MEEK, Sr. who was born in the British Isles, and later established a branch of this family in Virginia. A son, Samuel MEEK, Jr., came with his family at an early age to Ripley Twp, Sandusky Co., Ohio where he farmed until his death in December, 1890. He married a Sarah FARBER who was born near Canton, Ohio, and who died 27 Aug 1906. Samuel (Jr.) and Sarah had the following children-William C., of Barry Co., Michigan; John F., Townsend Twp.; Martin L., North Dakota; Elizabeth, who lives in Ripley Twp., the widow of H.H. RAYMOND; James, of Clyde, Ohio; Peter F. of Ripley Twp., and George G., born 8 May 1864. Page 705. In a biography of Horace H. RAYMOND, it mentions he was married 11 May 1897 to Miss Elizabeth MEEK, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (FARBER) MEEK. Elizabeth was born in Ripley Twp, and was an instructor in the schools of the area, mainly in Ripley Twp. 2. Sandusky County, Ohio Census Index, 1850, by Sandusky County Kin Hunters, 1990. Following are all MEEKs appearing on page 830 for Ripley Twp. Read first name, family relationship, age, and notes (if any). John F., s/o Samuel, 5, 1. John T. Martin L., s/o Samuel, 3. Ken Shute Look Up Results-- I must apologise. Upon re-checking, I find the information I gave you for A. SHIPMAN was actually the information for the the soldier ( a Wm. Shubert) listed immediately below that for A. SHIPMAN. The print is very small-- that's the best excuse I can come up with. So, the correct reference from A Military History of Huron County, Ohio, page 27, under the heading "Roll of Honor," is- "A. SHIPMAN, enlisted Oct., 1861, at Clarksfield, Co. D, 55th O.V.I.; discharged at Fort McHenry, Md., Sept., 1862." On page 29, under the heading Clarksfield Township Soldiers, we find- "A. SHIPMAN, Co. D, 55th O.V.I." On page 32, under the heading of Runyan (GAR) Post, No. 147, we find A. SHIPMAN listed as a member. In our History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879, there are references to both Anthony SHIPMAN and a Horatio N. SHIPMAN as being assignd to the 55th O.V.I. In the Military History (Civil War) of the Fire Lands Section of this book- Page 88. Under Privates, Company D, 55th O.V.I, is listed: "Anthony SHIPMAN, discharged (no date)." Page 87. Under Commissioned Officers for Company C, 55th O.V.I. is listed-"Captain Horatio N. SHIPMAN, resigned March 10, 1863." In case you'd like to know more about this 55th O.V.I Regiment, you might want to check out the web site for Ohio Civil War Infantry. The site is- www.infinet.com/~lstevens/a/infantry.html. This will bring up a list of Ohio Infantry Regiments. Click on "55th." This will lead you to all sorts of information on the 55th O.V.I., including bibliography and references, a history of the regiment, and history of its battles and operations (Dyer's Compendium). It will even give you a list of pictures of soldiers held by the U.S. Army Military History Institute. (I couldn't find your Anthony SHIPMAN there, but you might want to check yourself, considering my recent track record.) So far, I could not find anything on brother Charles SHIPMAN who was also supposed to have served in the war.

I believe I found Job in Huron County, Bonson Twp. at age 19 working as a farm laborer. I looked in the twp. for a family who had an Ada, but did not find one. Also could not find a JONES family who would fit for his family.

Ken Shute Look Up Results--I note that Edith C. DILLON DWIGHT is buried next to George B. and Tommie DILLON in Row 24, while Harry C. DWIGHT, quite possibly Edith's husband (?), is buried with Jane and George M. DILLON in Row 25, which would give me the impression that Edith C. (DILLON) and Harry C. DWIGHT might very well be related to your DILLONs. Does the name DWIGHT appear in your family records? The inscription following Tommie DILLON reads as I reported: "s/o C.M. & J.S. DILLON 14 Sep 1873-26 Jul 1888." Considering time and erosion, you could almost make a case for the "C" in C.M. DILLON being originally a "G." There is no record of a Sacarissa Jane OGIER DILLON in the index to the Cemetery Inscription book. That would be a hard one to miss. There is also no OGIER surname in this same index. This may be a reach, but since there is a Jane DILLON buried next to George M. DILLON, both born about the same time, it would be tempting to consider that this Jane might be George M. DILLON's wife, and for whatever reason, she had dropped the use of her first name ((Sacarissa) in favor of her middle name (Jane). This theory might be a little tough to square with the use of the initials "J.S." for the mother of Tommie, unless her first and middle names were reversed, and she was known as Jane Sacarissa (OGIER) DILLON. Is this a tangled web I wove, or what?

Please check to see if the initials behind Tommy's name were CM and JS - because his parents were George M. and Sacarissa Jane DILLON. The dates on George M. DILLON are what I have. I got a list of info and finally was putting it into a family sheet and discovered the dates do not work. Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications- Hoyt HUSTED m. Sarah GRAY 22 Mar 1837. Clarks field Methodist Cemetery, Clarksfield Township- Sarah HUSTED w/o Hoyt, d. 4 Mar 1868 age 27y. Just the marriage date alone is 31 years. On a collection of headstones that I found on microfilm, of course, do not have name. This was an early project that was done. Sarah is listed d. 1853 ae 37. Also Marriage records show Anna Cornelia STONE married Hoyt HUSTED in 1858. I told you my family was rather screwed up. How and what can I do or be done to correct the dates.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - You're right, there does appear to be a conflict in dates. At first it appeared that your Hoyt L. HUSTED had married three times as follows- Hoyt Husted m. Sarah GRAY 22 Mar 1837. Hoyt HUSTED m. Anna C. STONE 13 OCT 1858. Ethalinda FINCH m. Hoyt L. HUNTER 28 Jul 1856. I thought HUNTER might be a corruption for HUSTED, based on the cemetery Inscription information I gave you, but after checking the on-line IGI records (www. familyseach.org), I have to question this. The IGI records show an Ethalinda FINCH, b. 16 Nov 1838 in "Townsend, Huron, OH," married a Harman Hoyt S. HUSTED 28 Jul 1856, Huron, OH, the same date as given in our marriage book for the marriage of Ethalinda to "Hoyt L. HUNTER." The apparent conflict comes from the cemetery inscription for Sarah HUSTED showing she "d. 4 Mar 1868 age 27y." This would be 10 years after the marriage of Hoyt HUSTED to Anna C. STONE. It would also give Sarah a birth date of about 1841--four years AFTER she married Hoyt L. HUSTED. Thus the accuracy of the inscription date might come into question. Or else another person , to whom the inscription date applies, is named in the original inscription ,which portion is now referred to as "(rest unreadable)." I assume your Sarah HUSTED is in fact the mother of Henry W. and Evelyn E. HUSTED. Your death date of 1853 for Sara at age 37 sounds right. Maybe erosion caused "1853", and "age 37," on the original inscription difficult to read, resulting in the date that seems to be in question. If you wanted to check out Sarah's tombstone inscription for yourself, you could request HCC/OGS volunteer Norma Miller to take a picture of her tombstone and send it to you. For details, go to the HCC/OGS web site sites.rootsweb.com/~ohhuron, and click on Lookups. You will need to provide the following information- Name of Cemetery- Clarksfield Methodist Cemetery, Clarksfield Township. Location- Located in Section 3, Twp 3, Range 20, Clarksfield Twp, on the south side of Zenobia Rd., 1/4 mile east of SR 18 at Carksfield, just behind the Methodist Church at the top of the hill. Section and Row Nr.- Old Part 1841-- Row 8 North. 5 Sarah HUSTED w/o Hoyt & m/o Henry W. & Evelyn E. (rest unreadable) d. 4 Mar 1868 age 27y. Not to throw more mud in the waters, but I ran across another HUSTED, who might be related, while re-checking our publications- Clarksfield Methodist Cemetery, Clarksfield Township. Page 44, Old Part 1841-- Row 13 South. Eveline E. HUSTED STONE 1844-1910. Demmon C. STONE 1839-1907. Perhaps Eveline E. HUSTED was also a child of Hoyt L. & Sarah HUSTED??

Benjamin was reportedly married to Benjamin NYMAN's half-sister, Ann HOLLENBECK. Second, could you check your Seneca Co. sources for info re Benjamin's brother Philetus Swift NYMAN? Philetus was reportedly a successful businessman in Tiffin. Thanks for all the help. The info you provided about Benjamin NYMAN helped with a potential breakthrough in my wife's FISK/WOLAVER line. I and several other researchers had noted a seemingly close linkage between the FISK, NYMAN, and WOLAVER families. The info re Benjamin tied in with other data that pointed to Gorham, Ontario County, NY. Based on preliminary online research, it appears that our Susan Ann WOLAVER was Jacob WOLAVER's sister and was the half-sister of Ann HOLLENBECK and the NYMAN kids (Joseph H., John C., Sarah (NYMAN) RUGGLES, Rebecca (NYMAN) RUGGLES, Benjamin, and Philetus SWIFT). The thrice-married mother of all these kids appears to have been Mary (Maria) Elizabeth HAUER (also spelled HOWER) WOOLEVER HOLLENBECK NYMAN (whew!), who settled with her third husband (John NYMAN) in Peru Township. Anyway, if we can confirm the Susan Ann-Mary Elizabeth link, we should be able to extend that line of the family back as much as five generations.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - The two articles from which I selected the brief, gisted references on Benjamin NYMAN came from Just Like Old Times by Henry Timman--one from Book II, page 147, and the other from Book IV, page 98. These articles were published originally in the Norwalk Reflector newspaper and, I believe, are still protected by copyright law. Accordingly, I think copyright law prohibits me from making complete copies of these articles for further distribution. I am looking for any members of the VANCISE family. Unfortunately there are so many spellings in the records, the Ohio ones included. The most common ones, and the correct ones are VANCISE/VANSICE/VANSISE, with and without the space after Van. So far in the Ohio records I haven't seen any VANSICE names but I have seen it as VANSYSE, VANCIC, VANSYCE, VANSYTHE, VANSIZE, etc. I also have a list of 100+ other spellings so it really makes things difficult - twice as many as those without a Van tacked on to their name. No, I'm not asking to look up all the variations, but just wanted to let you know just in case you see something. If it can be sounded out even closely to VANCISE it's probably it. The 1850 census transcript that I have has one family as VANCISE but a marriage record for the VANCISE on the census has it VAN SISE. It really gets confusing. Another that I know of has VANCISE on the census and VANSYSE on the marriage record. The marriage book was the one that caught my eye. I would love to get some last names for the wives and husbands names for the daughters. I have no idea how the book is laid out, by name or city or what. The 1850 census has them in Ridgefield, Huron, OH. There were also some in Ruggles, and I've seen that put in Huron Co. and Ashland Co. so I assume the county split at some time. After that they spread all over.

I am researching the HENDRYX family; especially Benjamin HENDRYX who died after shooting himself. Although History of the Firelands states he died in 1823, a cousin, Jean Haynes, found this entry in the Norwalk Reporter of 23 June 1827, p. 2, col. 3: "Died--in New London, on Tuesday, May 15th Mr. Benjamin HENDRIX, from the accidental discharge of his own gun. The gun had been loaded a long time, he renewed the priming and attempted to discharge it at a mark, it flashed and from the report he supposed it went off, and immediately put his mouth to the muzzle to blow out the smoke, but the ramrod preventing, and finding it tight attempted to pull it out with his teeth, when the charge, which yet remained in the gun exploded; and lodged the whole contents (a ball &c.) in his head, he lingered 16 days and died, the ball was extracted from the side of his head after his decease." This Benjamin was the brother of Anthony, John, Phebe Corey, Elizabeth and son of Abraham HENDRYX and Rachel. Benjamin was married to Elizabeth BOYD. His daughter Betsy stayed in Huron County and his son William moved to Illinois. We believe that there were other children.

I have a deed dated 18 June 1823 for land from James & Margaret DOUGLASS (grantor/seller) to James Abraham (grantee/buyer). It is filed in the Coshockton County Recorder office on December 17, 1823 and recorded Jan. () 1824 in Book No. 3, on pages 546-547 per LDS Film 0895706. There is a possible Huron connection in a few ways- 1) The deed was signed in front of a Huron Co. Justice whose name I can't read but sort of looks like "Sales orilier" (obviously this isn't a correct guess). "Personally appeared before me the (Sales orilier), One of the Justices of the said County of Huron, the within named James DOUGLASS..." I would like to know if there is a list of Huron Co. justices for 1823 to compare the names to see if I can identify the correct name. No township name is listed. 2) a-Do you think this judge might have had a circuit that included Oxford Twp., Coshockton Co. ? b-Is it likely a Huron Co. judge might have been sitting in for a sick or out of town Oxford Twp.,Coshocton Co. judge? c-Could the deed have actually been signed in Huron Co.? 3)The deed was "Signed, Sealed, and Delivered in the presence of Peter Laing (seal) and Elisha Steward (seal)." I would like to discover if these individuals lived and/or worked in Huron County or in Coshocton Co. 4)When James DOUGLASS arrived in Richland County OH and filed 3 land patents in April 1824, he listed himself as "James DOUGLASS of Huron Co." I can find no record of him or his family ever living in Huron County. I am wondering if there was a route to Richland County from Coshocton via Huron Co.? I realize that Huron is north of Richland County and would not be a direct route, but maybe that was the best road. Or James may have left Coshocton and headed north intending to find land in Huron Co. He may have stopped in Huron County for awhile - may he went to a Huron Co. judge to sign the deed of sale enroute - and it would explain why he claimed his residence as Huron Co. on the land patents. Can you lend any insight to any of my ideas or point me to some potential resources?

Ken Shute Look Up Results-- I'm afraid I don't have information on the circuit practices of judges in Huron or other counties in Ohio. I also can't locate any list of Huron County judges for 1823. You might try contacting the Huron County Courthouse, 2 E. Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio to see if they can help in this request. I did find references to an Elisha STEWARD in New Haven Township, Huron County, Ohio, who you said was a witness to the signing of the 1823 deed. I also found a reference to a Peter "LANG" in the same New Haven Township, who might be your Peter "LAING" who was the other witness. I found a reference to a James DOUGLASS, and his sister Margaret DOUGLASS, in Erie County, Ohio, but this was in a period of time that seemed to be a much later period than that which you associated with your James DOUGLASS. Finally, if you haven't already, you might want to check out the home page of Coshocton County, Ohio. They have a Queries list, and a list of volunteers who do look ups. Go to www.usgenweb.com, then to Ohio, then to Coshocton County. Here are my findings- 1. History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879. Page 482. Section on Berlin Township, Erie County, Ohio. "Robert DOUGLASS came from Scotland to Canada, where after residing eighteen years, he removed to New York, and after three years, in 1833, he came to Berlin, purchasing a tract of land on the shore, where he resided until his death. His family consisted of eight children: Agnes, MARGARET, George, Mary, Isabella, JAMES, Betsey and Letitia..........James is now the only member of the family in town. He married Cornelia KING in 1857.........In 1874 he ran for state representative on the democratic ticket...." Page 302. Section on New Haven Township, Huron County, Ohio. "Elisha STEWARD, a native of Conneticut, but for sometime a resident of Pennsylvania, took up lot one hundred and twelve, section one (ca 1818). He married Mary Rice. Also on page 302. New Haven Township. "Peter and John LANG were among the early settlers. They came from New York, and lived in the village. The first named was an odd and original character who had a hand in every harem-scarem adventure that was enacted in his time." Page 303. New Haven Township. In 1826, the clerk's copy of the trustees report showed 86 householders in New Haven Township. Names, by School District, showed Elisha STEWARD among those in District No. 2. Page 304. New Haven Township. The first Justice of the Peace, Caleb Palmer, elected Nov. 24, 1815, served until 1822 when he was succeeded by Elisha STEWARD. Page 305. New Haven Township. This article notes that " when Elisha STEWARD was married to Mary RICE, a boisterous, bacchanalian crowd took forcible possession of the groom, put him on a sled, where they had placed a keg of whiskey, and compelled him to drink while they drove away and around the country." Page 316. New Haven Township. In a biographical sketch on a Thomas Mulford, it mentions that Mr. Mulford was born 1798 in Pennsylvania and came to Ohio in the fall of 1819. Soon after arriving in New Haven Township, Mr Mulford and Elisha STEWARD purchased a tannery in what is now New Haven Village.......In the fall of 1820, Mr. Mulford visited Connecticut, where in Lyme Township, New London County, he was married to Miss Phebe, daughter of Elisha and Mary CALKINS STEWARD, March 25, 1821, and in a few days subsequent returned to Ohio. 2. Ken Shute Look Up Results - Birth records certainly could help, but you'd have to know when and where John SCHLAGETER was born. As I reported, I could find nothing on him in our books except for the marriage record. Death records also would be a help, and could possibly furnish information on parents, but again, you'd have to know when and where he died. You mention John moved from Huron County to Toledo, Ohio about 1880. Toledo is in Lucas County. You might go to web site www.usgenweb.com, then click on Ohio, then click on Lucas County to get to their home page. Once there, you could see if they could offer records, or volunteer services to try to locate records, on John SCHLAGETER. If you could find his date of death, you could request copies of his death certificate, or see if you could have a volunteer check for any newspaper obits on John. You could also write the Probate Court, Huron County, Ohio, 2 E. Main Street, Norwalk, OH 44857 for a copy of John's marriage record. This might not give much additional information but it might be worth a try. There's an on-line IGI data base you could also search for your forebear. This is found at web site www.familysearch.org.

Just Like Old Times by Henry Timman, published originally in the Norwalk Reflector. Book IV, page 32, "Local Residents Joined Gold Rush, dated Aug. 7, 1981. This article mentions that Canarius PHILLIPS, the youngest son of Ezekiel and Maria PHILLIPS, went to California during the 1849 gold rush with a large group of men from Huron County, Ohio. Ezekiel and Maria PHILLIPS came to Hartland Township from Greene County, New York, in 1831, and settled on the southwest corner of the Hartland Five Points south of Hartland Ridge. Several members of their family are buried here in a family cemetery along Court Road. Canarius must have been succesful in his gold field digs since many years after his death in Bronson, Michigan, in 1909, some $3000 in gold coins was dug up on his former farm. This find was split between the owner of the farm, the tenant farmer, and the heirs of Canarius PHILLIPS. Canarius PHILLIPS had married Alzina JAMES of Hartland Ridge, a daughter of Peter JAMES. . They had no children. At the time of Alzina's death, three relatives searched the house for valuables pending settlement of her estate and found $6,000 in gold. Later, when Alzina PHILLIPS' estate was settled, another $12,000 was found. Book III, Page 60, "First 'Supermarkets' Hit Town," dated Feb. 23, 1979. This article describes a triple wedding, on Sept. 4, 1837, of three daughters of Ezekiel and Maria PHILLIPS: Alma to Daniel D. HOPPOCK; Abi to Robert GRIBBEN; and Harriet to Eben STONE. Abi PHILLIPS GRIFFEN (GRIBBEN) died a year after her marriage at age 23 and is buried with her parents. The HOPPOCKs eventually moved to Wisconsin.

I have relatives that are listed in the Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions Index, Huron County, published by The Huron County Chapter of OGS, 1997. I'm interested in getting dates of birth, dates of death, and any other informationregarding these relatives. Thomas STARR purportedly came to Greenfield Township and bought land in 1834. Not sure if he is "my" Thomas STARR. Two of my relatives are Epenetus STARR (b. 1772, d. 1847) , a founding pioneer in Greenfield Township, and his son, Cyrenius STARR (b. 1801, d. 1848). Epenetus is listed in the Alphabetical Index to Names of Early Settlers in the Huron County, Ohio Townships. Cyrenius is not. I've searched the Census Records on the internet and only Epenetus STARR was found. That was in the 1800 Census and it lists him in Cayuga County, New York.
