Ken Shute Look Up Results - A search of our Huron County, Ohio publications turned up nothing further on Daniel SHELTON beyond his marriage to Mariah PHILLIPS HENDRYX/ HENDRICKS in 1831. I could find no references to the children of Daniel and Mariah. But I did find a reference to the earlier marriage of Maria PHILLIPS to Barzillia HENDRICKS in 1828. As a possible side interest, I can only offer some references to Barzillia HENDRICKS which I found in our publications. Details- 1. Huron County, Ohio Marriages, by Scheuer Publications, 1992. Daniel SHELTON m. Mariah HENDRYX 22 May 1831. Maria PHILLIPS m. Barzillia HENDRICKS 2 Aug 1828. 2. History of the Fire Lands by W.W. Williams, 1879. Page 186. Section on Wakeman Township, Huron County, Ohio. "Barzilla S. HENDRICKS, his wife and adopted son, came into the township in the spring of 1819, and settled where George Denton now lives. Mr. HENDRICKS was killed by an accident, February 5, 1830. He and his wife had been to the Centre in attendance upon a meeting of some kind, and when near Merritt Hyde's, on their return home, a part of the harness gave way, the sleigh was wrecked, and Mr HENDRICKS received injuries which caused his death the following day. His first wife died in the early years of their settlement, and he married again a few years afterwood. His second wife is still living." Page 189. Wakeman Township. Barzilla S. HENDRICKS is listed among the white male inhabitants over age 21 living in Wakeman Township in 1829, according to the county assessor. "The first death was that of Mrs. HENDRICKS, mother of Mrs. Abram BRONSON, which occurred in the year 1820. The death of Mr. Bronson aoccurred a short time after that of Mrs. HENDRICKS." Page 191. Wakeman Township. The first church was organized October 25, 1822 by Rev. A.H. Butts & Joseph Treat, and was of the Congregational order. Barzilla HENDRICKS and wife were listed among the members of the First Congregational Church of Wakeman. 3. History of Huron County, Ohio, by A.J. Baughman, 1809. Vol. 1, Page 279. Mentions Barzilla S. HENDRICKS and family were among the early settlers of Wakeman Township in 1819. 4. Early Estate Index, Huron County Court Records, 1812-1852, by HCC/OGS. Ken Shute Look Up Results - I didn't find many references to Orrin HICKS/HIX, but I did find a reference to a William HIX, and to a Frederick HICKS, which I include on the possibility they might be related to ORRIN. Our History of the Fire Lands indicates that Orrin HICKS came to Bronson Township, Huron County, Ohio in 1830, moved to Norwich Township after a few years, then finally moved to Iowa. So you might want to look in Iowa for the burial location of Orrin, instead of Michigan or Huron County. There is no record in the Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book of the burial of Orrin HICKS/HIX. Details- 1. Huron County, Ohio Marriages, published by Scheuer Publications, 1992. Orrin HIX m. Polly GREGORY 16 Nov 1833. Albert B. ROYCE m. Louisa HIX 6 Feb 1847. 2. Plat Book of 1845, Huron County, Ohio. Orrin HICKS, Norwich Township, page 43, section 3, lot 32, 99.58 acres. Frederick HICKS, Bronson Township, page 29, section 1, lot 30, 91 acres. 3. History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879. Page 232. Section on Bronson Township, Huron County, Ohio. "Frederick HICKS and Ira Hull came in (to Bronson) from the State of New York in the year 1828......(Frederick) HICKS, about the year 1849, moved to Michigan......Orrin HICKS arrived in the spring of 1830, subsequently married Sally GREGORY, and settled on the lot adjoining Mr. Morse in the north. He moved to Norwich in a few years, and finally to Iowa." (Could this Frederick HICKS be the brother to Orrin HICKS, who you said moved to Michigan???)

Looking for information on any FILKINS. Elden Rufus FILKINS, was Marshall of Fitchville, Ohio. He married Elizabeth RHINEBERGER ("Libby"). In my family tree a story was told by Ruth VOGT of Norwalk, Ohio: "Strange, but years later, in the early 1930's my Grandpa and Grandma FILKINS lived in Norwalk, Grandpa had a stroke and wasn't able to work. Aunt Bertha worked in the County Coroner's Office and Grandma took a job at the local canning factory" Which Libby's brother A.J. RHINEBERGER did operate the canning factory, the factory was located west of the intersection of Palmer Road on Fayette Road,.As you cross the bridge (closed in 1984), follow the road along the river until it abruptly climbs a steep hill. Here on the right stood a house, which burned many years ago, but traces of the site still remain. Across the road and down over the bank was what appeared to be sort of an old drive. As you follow this slanting drive down toward the river, you come to a place near the site of the old canning factory. In the later years, this deep hole was known by all around as "the old swimmin hole"

I would like to correspond with anyone who is researching this line: Gustavus JACOBS b. abt 1828 m. Sara A. ROTH b. abt 1831, both born New York. His father Gustavus JACOBS b. abt 1796, m. Harriet ?? probably in New York. Their probable children were Gustavus, Harry, Hannah, Palmethias, Burley A., Wildes B. plus more. Gustavus and Sarah were in Norwalk, Huron Co., Ohio on or before 1870. I believe the HCC of OGS publised a book of bios that listed 2 of their Children, Gustavus P. and William H. JACOBS. Can anyone tell me if the above names such as Gustavus, Palmethias, Burley, or Wildes gives any clue to their nationality? There was a Gustavus Adolphus a Swedish King who died in a battle in Germany in 1632. Sources: 1870 Federal Census, Norwalk, Huron County Ohio. 1850 Federal Census, Mt. Morris, Livingston Co. N. Can anyone help me with information about Barrett Cemetery? An e-mail contact told me that my ancestor Daniel PROSSER (Who is not listed in the Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscription Index) was buried in Barrett Cemetery, New London. I found a Barretts Chapel on SR 60 listed on the history page, but no cemetery. Was there one at that location at one time? If so, where were the tombstones relocated? I noticed a PROSSER Monument located in Woodlawn Cemetery in Norwalk. Is it possible that Daniel is listed there?

Tom Neel Lookup Results--If it is the same D.W. BROWN, he appears on the c1845 plat map for Ruggles Twp., found in the Huron Co Courthouse, owning 36 1/2 acres in Sect. 3, Bradford Sturtevant tract, which would be on the east side of Rt 250 just north of Rt 224 (Ruggles Corners). There is an old house standing there, north of the motel. But I'm not good with distances to judge if that is his, or further down. A lease for water rights for D.W. BROWN's mill is recorded in Huron Co deeds, Vol. 14, p. 440, 17 Apr 1838, D & C.S. Beach to David W. BROWN. Don't concern yourself too much with the name, because David and Daniel are often very hard to tell apart when typing from old script. Deed, Daniel W. BROWN, wife Esther Jane, to Charlotte P. Ramey, warranty deed, 14 Mar 1853, for $100, the "lot on which there is a small frame house on west high bank of Vermillion", Ashland Co Deed Book, v. 14, p. 143. Statement was taken by L.F. Carey JP, of Hamilton Co OH. Still same guy? Another deed is recorded in Section 4, the Nezer Sutherland Tract. Ruggles Twp had land masses owned by some early speculators, and they divided up the parcels in any way that suited them. Daniel Beach to Esther J. BROWN, 25 acres, 30 Aug 1841, Vol. 16, p. 698, recorded Huron Co., part Lot 41.The Sutherland Tract is Castle Hill farm today, but BROWN's land was along the south side Rt 224, just west of Castle Hill - where Ron Crall lives. Robert McMurray to David W. BROWN, 1 acres, 4 Oct 1843, in Vol. 18, p. 424, Huron Co deeds. This is a lot in Ruggles Corners. I think most of the town was on the southeast corner of the intersection of Rt 224 and Rt 250 [not to be confused with the current Ruggles Center]. David W. BROWN mortgaged lot to Courtland L. Latimore, 1 acre, $160, next to Cumber property, 30 Mar 1846, Vol. 19, p. 597, Huron Co. Deed, D.W. BROWN, wife Esther Jane, to W.W. Parker, 1 May 1849, $200, 1 acre, next to town property of Nezer Southerland, deceased, Vol. 4, p. 311, Ashland Co. D.W. BROWN was the census taker for Ruggles Twp. in 1850, but I do not see his family listed there. He isn't buried there. He got his commission as Justice of the Peace in Ruggles Twp in 1840. Daniel W. BROWN was appointed first Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas in Ashland County when the county was organized in 1846. By 1847, he was an Associate Judge. He also might be the same D.W. BROWN on the Board of Trustees of Ashland Academy in 1841-1842. This may or may not be all the same fellow. It sounds like he had moved on to bigger and better things in the city of Ashland by 1850 but still kept up his contacts in Ruggles. Hope this helps.

A Benjamin and Louisa (GREEN) FILKINS appear to be the parents of Elden, according to the 1870 Census Index. Other children in the same family grouping (1870 census), however, would have been born prior to the marriage of Benjamin and Louise. Ken Shute Look Up Results - The introduction to Butterfield Cemetery, New London Township, Huron County, Ohio, found on page 402 of the Huron County Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions, published by HCC/OGS, 1997, states in part- The OGS Ohio Cemeteries book lists this as Barrett Cemetery, but that is incorrect. Barrett's Corners is further to the north. There are several PROSSERs listed in Butterfield Cemetery, but no Daniel PROSSER. There is also a Prosser Cemetery in New London Township found in the same Cemetery Inscriptions book. It begins on page 459. The introduction to this cemetery states in part: "Prosser Cemetery is located......on the Rumbaugh farm, on a small hill north of a creek at the NW corner of SR 60 and Prospect Rd., 3 miles north of New London and just north of Butterfield Cem. It is fenced but in poor shape and is only cleaned out occasionally by volunteer groups......." There are quite a few PROSSERs buried here, but I could locate a Daniel PROSSER. The only reference I could find to a Daniel PROSSER in our Huron County, Ohio publications was his marriage to an Elizabeth SMITH on 20 Jan 1842. This was found in our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, by Scheuer Publications, 1992.

Thomas Neel Look Up Results - There is a Prosser Cemetery on the Rumbaugh farm near the intersection of Rt 60 and Prospect Road. I have been in there many times and there is no stone for Daniel PROSSER. But he could be buried there with other family members. If he died in the newspaper age, you might check for an obituary to see if the cemetery is listed. Later death certificates also give the cemetery of burial. The township does not care for Prosser Cemetery and therefore has no records on it. The Butterfield Cemetery is located at the northwest corner of Rt 60 and Prospect Road, and it is the much larger (but still small) township cemetery. Again, there are PROSSER family members buried here, but no Daniel PROSSER. You might check with the New London Township trustees to see if they have any burial register for this one. I guess I should do that sometime too since I live here! There is no cemetery at Barrett's Chapel which is at the corner of Rt 60 and Cook Road, the next road to the north - named after Zelotus Barrett. The book Ohio Cemeteries lists Butterfield Cemetery as Barrett Cemetery or Miller Cemetery. I personally have never heard it refered to as Barrett Cemetery and have wondered if that might be an error, since Barrett's Corners is so close to the north. However, Henry Timman, Huron Co Historian, is the one who submitted the material to Ohio Cemeteries, and he usually doesn't make mistakes, so perhaps that name was used in some obituary or death record. I have just seen no evidence that it was ever called Barrett Cemetery. But this could be the one that your source means - Butterfield Cemetery.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - Here are bits and pieces found which relate to some of your FACKLER names. May help in your search for the FACKLER lineage. The Huron Couny, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book indicates Jonas FACKLER (ca 1799-1875) and wife Elizabeth (ca 1797-1866) were buried in Richmond Township Cemetery, Richmond Township. In William's History of Huron County, Ohio, Richmond Township, it mentions that Jonas and his younger brother Jacob came to Richmond Township on 30 Apr 1837. They settled on lot 2, section 2. Our Atlases show a progression of generational ownership of land by FACKLERs in Richmond Township, starting with Jonas FACKLER. In 1845 Jonas FACKLER owned land in section 2, lot 2 (abbreviated 2:2).. In 1873, J. (Jonas?) Fackler owned land in 2:2. A. FACKLER and P.O. FACKLER owned land in 2:1. In 1891, Philip FACKLER owned land in 2:1. Dan'l.FACKLER owned land in 2:2. Jas. FACKLER owned land in 1:3. M.C. FACKLER owned land in 1:18. Our Death Index for Huron County, Ohio, 1867-1908, shows Jonas FACKLER d. 11/17/1875, Vol. 1, Page 49. Henry SAYRE 18 Nov 1851, Old Book 3, Page 255. Lydia RIGGS m. Obadiah VAUGHAN 24 Apr 1847, Old Book 3, Page 41. Thomas E. RIGGS m. Sara E. BURDUE 20 Jan 1867, Book 2, Page 50. I include Lydia in case she might be related to Mary. They were the only RIGGS brides in this general time period. I'm not sure if Thomas E. Ken Shute Look Up Results - While I had no luck in finding the marriage of Joseph LEIS and Eva GROSS, a check of our other Huron County, Ohio publications turned up references to a Joseph LEIS (and family), in Sherman Township, Huron County, who might be related. They are- 1. Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions, by HCC/OGS, 1997. St. Sebastian Catholic Cemetery, Sherman Township. Page 840 Section C-- Row 8. 3 Joseph LEIS 1787-1869. Agatha 1797-1882. History of Huron County, Ohio, by A.J. Baughman, 1909. In Vol. 1- Page 356 there is a biographical article on Adam S. LEIS. It mentions Adam was born in 1860, a son of Peter and Margaret (FRISH) LEIS, natives of Germany. Peter was born 1829, the son of Joseph and Agatha LEIS. Peter married Margaret FRISH in 1865. She was born in Germany also, and died in 1896. Peter came to the U.S. in 1848, and located in Sherman Township, Huron County, Ohio, where he worked as a farm hand for some time. Peter and Margaret had 13 children. It appears there may be at least three Joseph LEIS' involved in the above references, based, if nothing else, on death dates.

The names are taken from our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, by Scheuer Publications, 1992. They are- Abraham FACKLER m. Nancy ANDRUS 5 Oct 1848. Daniel FACKLER m. Margaret YEATES 17 Jun 1847. Jacob FACKLER m. Isabella SMITH 1 Oct 1848. Jacob R. FACKLER m. Sarah CARPENTER 25 Mar 1841. I checked the names of the above four, plus the name of Ezra FACKLER, in our Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions, by HCC/OGS, 1997, and found- New Greenwich Cemetery, New Haven Township. Baughman, in his History of Huron County, Ohio, 1909, describes a DIDION family living in Sherman Township who might relate to the elusive Christian, but who have no children named Christian. In a biographical article on John J. DIDION, found in Vol. 1- Page 418, it mentions the parents of John J. were John and Sophia (BASHOB) DIDION. John DIDION, Sr. brought his family to the U.S. in 1852, where they settled in Sherman Township, Huron County, Ohio. John, Sr. and Sophia had five children, one of whom was John. J., Jr., the subject of the biography. (None others named Christian.) John J., Jr. married Rosella HERMAN, the daughter of Paul and Mary HERMAN, natives of Germany, but later, settlers of Seneca County, Ohio. John J. Jr. and Rosella DIDION had 16 children. I note with interest that the road to the center of Norwalk from the Northwest on my map is called "WHITTLESEY Road". Does anyone know the history of that name in Norwalk? Did a number of immigrants from WHITTLESEY England come to Norwalk about the time of its settlement? I ask because my ancestors show in the 1851 census in WHITTLESEY (Cambridgeshire?) England, and show in the marriage records of Huron County in 1854/55 with their young people being married. My theory is that they must have known people in this town, relatives or otherwise, to come directly there.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - It appears that Whittlesey (road) was named after Elisha WHITTLESEY, a lawyer from Canfield, Ohio, who, with his friend Platt BENEDICT, was one of the original founders of Norwalk. Reportedly, in 1815, WHITTLESEY and BENEDICT visited a sand ridge in Norwalk Township that offered high ground suitable for the location of a town that later would become Norwalk and the county seat of Huron County. Platt Benedict purchased 1,374 acres of land encompassing this sand ridge and put it in the name of WHITTLESEY. That property later became the part of Norwalk City mainly east of Hester Street, and south of Washington Street. Matthew, a brother of Elisha, and E. Moss White also invested in this land. The above is gisted from our Just Like Old Times, by Henry Timman, originally published in the Norwalk Reflector. The article appears in Book 6, Page 11, titled- Sand Ridge Looked Like Good Place for a Town, and dated March 13, 1987. Also appearing in the same Book 6, on page 109, is an article titled: Very Few Streets in Norwalk Still Bear Original Names, and dated January 27, 1989. This article indicates that Whittlesey (street) was originally named Mechanic (street), and that Benedict (Avenue) was earlier named Wooster. Further, the article states that these (streets)-- Whittlesey and Benedict-- were named in honor of the founders of the town.

HUSTED went on to marry Alberta JACKSON - which is my connection into the HUSTED family. I can find no mention of Ms. FINCH in the HUSTED info I have. One close family though that married into the JACKSON Family is the FITCH family, which were also in Huron County.

I am looking for any info on my Great,Great,Great Grandparents, Herman and Elizabeth HULL. The 1850 Huron Co. census shows them in Bronson Township as a farmer. I believe they moved there around 1824, as the census shows a daughter born somewhere in Ohio in 1823 and another son, Benjamin, born in Ohio in 1829. My great great grandfather, John A. HULL their lst born in 1813 in N.Y. and another son, Orley (Sp?), born in about 1819. I note in the Huron Co. website a Hull Farm Cemetery. Are either Herman or Eliza. buried there. I dont know if Herman HULL would be a brother of Jonathon HULL, listed in your web site as an early pioneer of Bronson township, or what relation.

Alice HOWE OSBORN (b 10/19/1850, d 11/11/1885) (I'm not sure if HOWE is her middle name or her maiden name; my suspicion is that her maiden name was Alice HOWE NYMAN). Children enumerated with them are Sarah Ann, age 17; Joseph, age 15; Rachel, age 13; William, age 11; Mary Ann, age 8; Martha, age 4 and Eliza, age 1. The marriage records of Huron County show Sarah A. GOLDING wed William PACEY Jan 27, 1855; Joseph GOLDING wed Martha A. PHILIPS Apr 4, 1857; Rachel C. GOLDEN wed Thomas BARRON Feb 16, 1855; William GOLDEN wed Hannah Mariah COLE Sep 19, 1859 [William died in the Civil War and he must have still lived in Huron County because we see his widow Mrs. Hannah GOLDING getting married there in Nov. 1869. I do not see him on Huron Co Records of Civil War]. The parents moved on to Marion Township, Putnam, (now Henry) County and had two more children including my grandfather, Samuel T. GOLDEN. William PACEY is known to be from England, and I am guessing that he and some of the other "spouses" may have crossed about the same time as the GOLDENs. Are there any records in Huron County (or elsewhere, that you are aware of) of new arrivals, intention to settle or any such thing? We have been unable to find the ship list where they traveled. There are marriage records for a number of other GOLDENs so there must have been a settlement in the county. Any idea what township? Are there GOLDEN burial records in Huron Co? The above is literally all I know about the GOLDENs in Huron Co. Any insight or suggestion of places to check would be appreciated. Any leads? Also, would like to hear from descendants of any of the above who happen to see this.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - An article written by Henry Timman may shed some light on the question of the burial location of Dr. Arthur L. and Alice HOWE OSBORN in proximity to that for Benjamin and Mary NYMAN. The article is found in our Just Like Old Times, by Henry Timman, published originally in the Norwalk Reflector. It appears in Volume 2, page 147. It is titled Two Old Homes and dated Dec. 2, 1977. The article mentions an old home in Norwalk's Historic District, scheduled to be torn down. It was located at 196 West Main Street and built about 1866 by Charles Childs. The house was purchased in 1874 by Benjamin NYMAN who lived there until his death in 1916 at age 96. The article goes on to say that for many years Dr. Arthur L. OSBORN and his wife Mary lived with Mr. NYMAN and cared for him. Dr. OSBORN died in 1911, but his wife was reported as continuing to live in the house until her death in 1953. According to our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, Arthur L. OSBORN m. Alice A. HOWE 27 Oct 1875. Later, Arthur L. OSBORN m. Mary Lillian PERKINS 28 Dec 1887. Apparently, this latter Mary is the one mentioned in the Timman article. Our Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Index, by HCC/OGS, 1997, shows a Mary L. OSBORN buried in Rice Cemetery, Norwalk Township. Adelaide "Addie" DALTON, b. Ohio, 1870, married a Gene AMINOW/AMINIOU, date unknown. Again, the only thing that I know is that he existed. Semora "Mora" DALTON, b. Ohio, 1873, married a John WEIDERMAN, date unknown. Also, nothing else is known about him. Can anyone tell me if any of these husbands or their apparent families existed in the Wakeman area at the probable times of the several marriages? Any birth, death, church records for DALTON, WEIDERMAN, ABBOTT, AMINOW/AMINIOU? Lastly, I am interested in any record of a divorce proceedings by a Caroline DALTON against her husband Edward "Ned" DALTON that would have taken place about 1876. His father, Leverett BRADLEY, often referred to in articles as Dr. BRADLEY, purportedly died 40 years previous to 1904. This information is based on a small news item regarding a Quiet Title action to property he held in Folsom. (I have not found an obituary or death notice for Dr. BRADLEY. I do not believe he died prior to 1866, because I have a published news item regarding him that appeared on Dec. 30, 1865.) Cyrus's mother, Maria S. BRADLEY, died in Folsom, Sacramento County, on Dec. 12, 1858, and is believed to be buried in the Folsom cemetery, although no marker exists there. Note that she died exactly 5 years after Joseph - December 12th. Joseph BRADLEY would have been older than Cyrus and may have been born in Ohio or could have been born elsewhere. I do not know if the BRADLEY's may have had other children before coming to California ca. 1853. I am seeking any information about these people and their life prior to California and will be eternally grateful for any assistance you might lend. Cyrus H. BRADLEY, a Norwalk native son, is the man who pushed me into studying these histories. I have interesting information on this long-forgotten, California pioneering family, and will gladly share it with your organization if it is of any interest.
