Would appreciate information on Andrew B. Hamilton. He was born near Owen Sound, ON,Canada, ca. 1871. Sometime after 1894 he moved to Norwalk, OH. He was there in 1937 when one of his sisters, Mamie, visited him, and died while visiting him. We have a picture of his house, but no street number is visible. He may be listed in the Huron County cemetary list, along with a son Ira.

I found what appears to be three different Abijah BAKERs in Fairfield Twp, Huron County, Ohio, none of which I can identify with any confidence as being your A.A. BAKER, because of variances in birth years, spouses, etc. One Abijah A. BAKER, 1832-1908, was married to a Sarah M. MOFFITT. Another was Abijah BAKER, 1802-1868, married to a Phebe_____, whose place of birth was Onondago County, New York. The third was an Abijah Baker who would have been born ca 1843 according to the !870 Census Index for Huron County, Ohio. I also found a Perry BAKER, b. 1839, d. 1906, whose wife was named Fanny. In hopes that some of this information may relate to your BAKERs, here are the details- 1. Gateway to the West, by Bowers and Short, 1989. Page 650. Huron County, Ohio Death Records, 1867-1868. Ken Shute Look Up Results - Sorry to say, but our Marriage book contains only the marriages in Huron County, Ohio from 1815 to 1900- missing the period (1914/1915) you mention for your FARMER-MURR marriage. Generally, our Huron County, Ohio publications cover the period from the late 1700's to the late 1800's, with a few as late as about 1908. However, our Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions, by HCC/OGS, covers later periods and appears to contain information on your Lewis FARMER and Ethel MURR. This doesn't help in pinning down the marriage date, but I give it below in case you don't already have this inscription information. Both have stones in the Grove Street Cemetery, New London Township. The stone for Ethel MURR FARMER is located in Section 1, Row 14, where some other MURRs are also buried, while Lewis FARMER is buried somewhat separately from Ethel in Section 6, Row 23. Looking for descendants of James CURTIS and Sarah WOODROW. James was born December 18,1848 in Dorset, England and Sarah WOODROW born December 3,1849 in Dorset,England. They married September 7,1869 in Dorset, England and immediately set sail for the United States. They settled in Monroeville around 1870. This is where they started their family. The first born to this union was Walter James Curtis b.1871, the next child was Arthur William b. 1873. Around 1873 a visit was planned to visit family and friends and turned out to be eight year stay. In this time three more children were born in England; Harry Clayton, Alfred Charles and Reginald. Upon returning to Monroeville in 1881 three more children were born; Nellie Maud, Frank Littleton and Edwin Sidney. James CURTIS and Sarah WOODROW remained in Monroeville their entire lives. They are buried in Riverside Cemetery along with their children and spouses. Any information on these families would be greatly appreciated.

I live on State Route 113 in rural Berlin Heights. Even though this is Erie County, I recently discovered that I have ancestors buried in Huron County. My maternal grandmother was a PROSSER. She lived near Lima Ohio so I didn't know that her family was from Huron Co. I found the Huron Co website from rootsweb when I was looking for PROSSER information. I started tracing my mother's genealogy about two years ago. I found much info on her father but not much on her mother's ancestors.

I received a copy of Joseph FREY's son's marriage certificate today, and his parents' names are written in script, but the maiden name of Joseph's wife, Polina, definitely is written with an R. From the certificate, it appears to be- Joseph FREY and Paulina REM.. .. after the first three letters, the script is not as distinct. It could be REMELN or REMELE or RENELN, or REMELER or ?? there's a break in the handwriting, but looks like an L. It also says that their son, Frank FREY, was baptised in Sandusky, Ohio. If this is correct, then Joseph FREY may have been in Sandusky following his marriage to Polina, then moving on to Wyandot County. It's possible the baptism location may have been Upper Sandusky, which would've been in Wyandot County. If only the priest's handwriting were a little clearer! So I am now going on the basis that RUMMELE or some variation (or misspelling) is what I'm looking for. Any direction that you might be able to give me would be so appreciated. Oh I do love a puzzle!

Ken Shute Lookup Results--From an article written by Ruth Reed in the Spring, 1989 edition of the Huron County Kinologist, Volume IV, Number 1, page 110, it appears that the surname of Polina/Paulina/Pauline might be REMELEY. Ruth was also the editor of the Kinologist at the time. Here are the relevant parts of the article- THE REMELEY FAMILY OF PERU TOWNSHIP by Ruth A. (Gies) Reed. "Lorenz 'Lawrence' and Josephine (Ritter) Remeley of Remelle Rd. Peru Township, Huron County came to America in 1847. Joseph was born 10 Jan 1791 in Baden Germany and was a glazier by trade.Their ten children were all born in Baden. Five girls and one son reached maturity and came to America with their parents. They were: Joseph who married Theresa Gies, Josephine who married Anthony Fischer, Stephany who married Andreas Fischer, Blondina who married Michael Gies, Pauline who married Joseph FRY and Frances who married Martin Ruff. Their name (REMELEY) is no longer seen as their son Joseph had two sons. One grandson never married and the other only had one daughter." Note- Ruth Reed also wrote an article appearing on the same page as the above on the Joseph Gies family, citing the intermarriages with the Remeley family. I found two other references to Joseph FRY in our Huron County publications- 1. Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992. Joseph FRY m. Polina REUMMEL 17 Nov 1847, old book 3, page 67. 2. Early Naturalizations, Huron County, Ohio Court Records, 1819-1864, by HCC/OGS. Joseph FRY, 11/3 /1856, Switzerland, XI, 113, naturalization.

Ruth Reed Look Up Results- I have been researching the REMLEY/REMELE/RUMMELE family for a long time. I have seen the name written many more ways but the first is the most common. The road they first lived on is spelled the second way. Paulina turned out to be Rosina. But I have seen it Polina. Her parents are Lawrence and Josephine (RITTER) REMLEY////. The /// stand for all the variations. They are buried at St Paul's Cemetery in Norwalk. Joseph FREY and Rosina are buried in St Peter's cemetery in Norwalk. I am not sure where Wyandote figures in. I have records on many of the Joes and Rosina children but not 100%. My neighbor is directly related to them and she helped me with this info. Rosina, I believe, was a twin to Josephine (REMLEY) FISCHER who died giving birth to triplets. There are many sets of multible births in both Rosina and Josephine's offspring. I do not have a complete birth date on these two to prove that they are twins. But I do not any info to disprove it either.

I am new to the Huron List, as my research just took me here for the first time. I'm hoping some kind soul on this list can help me, as confirming this would allow me to accomplish a goal of a five generation chart for my folks for Christmas. The maiden name I seek is of my gg grandmother. A family "tip" told me to try this area for a maiden name I've been stumped with, and I think the tip may pan out, at least I hope! I looking for the maiden name and family for the following. My "tip" thought the name might be WILLOUGHBY or WILLABY, so I'm not sure if this IGI was transcribed correctly, or if my "tip" was a little off, but in either case, the rest of the info matches so well that it bears checking out. First who I seek- info on maiden name & family of Polina ?, b. census est. 1831, death cert. says 1823, both state Germany. d. January, 1913 in Wyandot county, Oh. Married Joseph FREY, b. abt 1821, Germany or Switz, depending on which record. d.abt 1895, Wyandot County Oh. I'm not sure how immediate the move to Wyandot County was, but I do know that my FREY was there in 1880 census at least, and most likely before that. Next- The Family Search site lists this IGI transcribed from film of Marriage Records, 1818-1934; record of licenses and permits, 1815-1828, Huron County, Ohio, Probate Court IGI Joseph FRY Male Marriage- Polina RUMMELE 25, Nov. 1847 Huron, Ohio. I know I need to send for physical records to document this, but if someone has a tip as to whether Polina's maiden name was transcibed correctly, I would appreciate it, as well as the address that I would send to get a copy. Also helpful would be a Catholic Church where I might look. I have been putting together descendant info on the Joseph FREY family, settled in Wyandot County, and could share info with interested party if this pans out.

Could someone in Huron County please check for the obituary for my GGG-Grandmother, Deborah ROBINSON RULE? She died 26 Oct 1882, and was buried in St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetary, in Norwalk Township. I am trying to obtain the death certificate for her. The Huron County Pr Judge didn't have it, nor did the Summit County Pr Judge. She spent part of her time with a daughter in Akron. The obituary may clear up where she was staying when she died, so that I can obtain the certificate from the correct county.

Ken Shute Lookup Results--I was unable to find any definite information in our Huron County, Ohio publications on the death certificate of Deborah RULE, but here is what I did find on Deborah and her husband John Henry RULE. According to our Cemetery Inscriptions book, Deborah was born ca 1797 and died 26 Oct 1882. John H. RULE was born ca 1794 and died 17 Jul 1867. They were both buried in St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Norwalk Township. In our Gateway to the West, by Bowers & Short, Vol. 1, page 649--Huron County, Ohio Death Records, 1867-1868-- "Following death records were copied from Death Records located in the Probate Court at Norwalk- John Henry RULE- died 7-17-1867 age 73 years, place of death Norwalk, place of birth Headington, Scotland, page 1 of Death Records." Also, in our Death Index of Huron County, Ohio, 1867-1908, by HCC/OGS, 1998- John Henry RULE d. 07/17/1867, Vol. 1, Page 1. There was no record in this Death Index for Deborah RULE. Our 1870 Census Index for Huron County, Ohio, by HCC/OGS shows Deborah RULE in a presumed family group including son James H. RULE. Read name, birthplace, (census) page number, location. Charles RULE, OH, 415, Norwalk Village. Deborah RULE, RI, 415, Norwalk Village. James H. RULE, OH, 415, Norwalk Village. Mary A. RULE, OH, 415, Norwalk Village. William RULE, OH, 415, Norwalk Village. Finally, in our Just Like Old Time series, by Henry Timman, published originally in the Norwalk Reflector. Book II, Page 100. Article titled "Tracker John RULE," dated January 7, 1977. This article mentions that John H. RULE, a native of Scotland, was also an expert tracker of criminals on the run in the countryside. John lived in Norwalk and was a blacksmith by trade. He came to Norwalk from Cayuga County, New York in 1832. The article states that the John H. RULE family, including wife Deborah and several small children, came to Ohio from Cayuga County via the Erie Canal and Lake Erie. On arrival, Deborah is reported to have continued a correspondence with friends in Cayuga County. The RULE family lived in Norwalk for a time on Whittlesy Avenue, just north of Washington Street, but made their last home at number 54, North Foster Street. This latter was the home of their son James H. RULE who worked for, or at times was the owner of, the former Experiment Newspaper in Norwalk. Deborah was mentioned as being a member of the Mothers of Israel, who spent hours nursing the sick, attending the dying, and washing and dressing newborn babies. The Norwalk Experiment newspaper (20 Aug 1835 to 18 May 1874) and the Norwalk Weekly Reflector ( 26 Jul 1853 to 25 Dec 1894) might contain obits for John H. RULE. The latter newspaper and the Norwalk Daily Reflector (22Sep 1882 to 25 Jan 1913) might contain obits for Deborah RULE. These newspapers, presumably in microfilm form, are held by the Norwalk Public Library. Go to the HCC/OGS home page (sites.rootsweb.com/~ohhuron) and go to the link for Libraries and Museums. HCC/OGS offers a service whereby volunteers in the Norwalk, Ohio area will research holdings in the Courthouse, libraries, etc. Again, go to the HCC/OGS home page for details on this service, including costs.

He married an Effie WOOLCOTT in 1847, died in 1850 according to our Early Estate Index, owned property in Greenwich Twp, was a Quaker, and active in the "underground railroad" set up to help runaway slaves seek their freedom. Sources- will record "A", page 255; probate docket #2, page 29; Common Pleas Journal #9, page 406. 4. Just Like Old Times by Henry Timman, published originally in the Norwalk Reflector. Book I, page 19, article entitled "Railroad North to Freedom, dated Aug. 11, 1972. In this article on the "underground railroad," there is mention of several underground "stations" (homes in rural parts of Huron County), where the owners sought to help the runaway slaves escape to freedom. One of these was the farm of Joseph HEALY of Greenwich Township. He was a Quaker and also a station agent. After his death, a secret room was found under the haymow in his barn with secret passages. In one instance, Joseph Healy led 12 men, women and children from his farm in Greenwich to one Rundle Palmer's in Fitchville in October, 1842. This was after the fugitive slave act was passed in 1839, forbidding the harboring of runaways, thus making such actions more risky. There, the fugitives were taken prisoner by the sheriff of Huron County and and brought to Norwalk. Five of the party were tried before the Common Pleas Court and remanded back to slavery. The other seven, discouraged by these events, agreed to return to slavery.

If the inscriptions themselves are also available, that would be heaven! But even knowing the cemetery name would be immensely helpful. I am particularly interested in Warren SALISBURY (pg 61) and associated graves, and William (pg 780 [2]) and associated graves. I am also interested in Franklin, Mary, and Matilda (all pg 174), because I know that Warren had a brother named "Frank".

He called the product "Maple City," and made Norwalk a recognized name in the U.S. 2. The tobacco factory was located in a building now occupied by Perfected Furniture on West Main Street, and extended in an L-shape to North Hester. 3. Maple City tobacco was manufactured in Norwalk until about 1921, when CASE died. The business was then moved out of state, but the product continued to be sold under the same name for many years after. 4. This same article also tells of other events in the life of Francis B. Case, as well as his other businesses and investments. There are also references to Francis B. CASE and his family in other of the six books in Henry Timman's Just Like Old Time series. The Norwalk Public Library is reported as holding copies of this series. If interested, you might try for an interlibrary loan.

My ancestor, James DOUGLASS/DOUGLAS/DUGLESS/etc. declared himself to be from Huron County when he signed for land patents in Richland County in 1824. A history book on Richland County says he arrived in 1816 but doesn't say from where. To the best of my research he was in Coshocton Co. in 1820 per U.S. census. However it is possible that "my" James had left and another had moved into the county, or come of age to be counted, as there were unrelated DOUGLASSes in Coshocton Co. at the time. Was there a census of any kind or other means of locating James between 1815 and 1824 in Huron County? Would there have been any advantage to him to declare Huron Co. as a place of residence? I am also looking for his father Abraham DOUGLASS who immigrated about 1760 from Scotland. If anyone has any information, please contact me.

I am trying to locate documentary confirmation of the death of my wife's ancestor, Jahiel FISK. He reportedly died 12/18/1854 in Huron County, but I have not been able to locate a death certificate or burial info. Is there a source of Huron County newspapers for the period 11/1854 - 1/1855? I am hoping to find a death notice or obit.

I found some HEALY ancestors of mine in Huron Co cemeteries, listed in the index at the HCGS site. On page 170, are A., Abram, Elizabeth P., Jacob, Jemima, Phebe, Phebe C., Rachel, S., and Smith. I need to find out where this particular cemetery is located, it's name and address. I'd like to go there and read the inscriptions for dates and whatever other info I may gather.

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- Tombstone inscriptions (below) for the HEALYs found on page 170 in the index to the Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions, published by HCC/OGS. 1997- The tombstones are all located in the Quaker Cemetery (now called the East Cemetery), located in Section 1, Township 1, Range 2, on the south side of US 224, and less than 1/4 mile east of State Road 13. This is in Greenwich Township, Huron County, Ohio. If you go to the HCC/OGS home page (sites.rootsweb.com/~ohhuron), click on "Map, History & Evolution", then click on "Detailed Township Maps," and finally click on the township square for Greenwich Township (bottom right of the county map), you'll bring up a cemetery location map for Greenwich Twp. The location of the Quaker Cemetery on this map is identified as Nr. 5. Finally, an HCC/OGS volunteer, Norma Miller, upon request, is willing to go to the Huron County cemetery of the ancestors of the requestor, take picture(s) of the tombstone(s), and mail the picture(s) back to the requestor. Details for this service can be found by going to the HCC/OGS home page and clicking on either "Look Ups" or "Research (done for you)." In either case, look for the information at the bottom of the resultant screen. Quaker Cemetery. Page 170. My name is Julie Ann (SHELTON) FENNER and I am researching my family on my dad's side. I got as far back as my great great grandparents and could go no further. Then I discovered they lived in Huron County and so I am still looking. They are Daniel SHELTON and Mariah/Maria M. PHILLIPS HENDRYX/HENDRICKS SHELTON. They were married in Huron County May 22, 1831 and all four of their children were born there. PHILLIPS is her maiden name, she was briefly married to a Barzillia S. HENDRYX/HENDRICKS, unsure of spelling, who died as the result of a sleigh ride injury. She was born in New York February 15, 1807 where her father was also born. Her mother was born in Massachusetts. I do not know her parents names but would love to find out. Daniel was born in Ohio, I think in 1815. I do not have an exact date and do not know his parents names either. If anyone can help with this I would be thrilled beyond belief. Their children's names were Nelson Stephen born July 2, 1834, George W. born October 21, 1840, John S. born in 1843 and Julia J. who I am guessing was born in 1846 do not know for sure. This family was found living in Genesee County, Michigan in 1850 and Daniel and Julia died within 7 days of one another in 1853. From what I do not know.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - There is a Frank H. LONG in the Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book, page 387. It gives his burial as being in Maple Grove Cemetery, New Haven Township, Section R-- Row 14: Frank H. LONG 1855-1933 (IOOF). If this is your Frank H. LONG, then his birth would be prior to the year (1867) when birth records were first kept. You might query the Probate Court, Huron County Courthouse. Also, you might consider the possibility of church records.
