I am rejoining the list after taking a vacation to Europe visiting 20 ancestral towns. Some of the towns were ties to the MEHNEN family of Sherman Twp. I am looking for additional information about the following people buried in St. Alphonsus Cemetery: Mary K. LORENZ, Johann LORENZ, Antonie LORENZ and Mary A. LORENZ. Specifically, I am interested in hearing from anyone who is researching the LORENZ family or would have information about the history of St. Alphonsus. I do have information that my wife's gg grandmother Mary L. LAWRENCE married Matthias MEHMEN in the Catholic Church in Bronson Twp. On January 26, 1864. I have assumed that LAWRENCE and LORENZ sound alike and that it is possible the above mentioned people are possibly ancestors and relatives of my wife's gg grandmother.

(Although these specific individuals moved at that time, census records indicate that others with the same surnames still resided there into at least 1860.): Benjamin & William COGSWELL in Oxford Township - I believe they are related to my ancestor George COGSWELL. Jacob BOUCK/BOUCH who was married in Huron Co in the 1820's - poss a bro of Barney, below. Barney BOUCK b. abt 1800 NY m. Clarana COGSWELL (b. abt 1806 NY, dau of George, above) - they lived in Margaretta Township in 1830. John STACY - don't know much about him, but my grgrgrandfather, John Stacy BOUCK (s/o Barney, above) is probably named after a John STACY and his name seems to appear wherever Barney Bouck lives, so I would guess he was b. abt 1780 in NY.

I'd appreciate some information from your "Huron County, Ohio Marriages" book, and other sources you may know of. According to informal family records, Alvin Lee SHOUP (1864-1942) married Carrie WEIDEN GIBSON (1867-1938, not sure about Carrie's middle name) in Greenwich, Ohio in 1887 (March 12?). Carrie is the daughter of Jerome G. GIBSON (1842-1925) and Hulda HEALY (d. 1893). Alvin was the son of Daniel SHOUP (1838-1911) and Jane LEE (1841-1922). Alvin and Carrie moved to Wood County in 1891, and started a farm near Bloomdale, Ohio. They had one son, Harry Jerome SHOUP (1894-1983), who is my paternal grandfather. Is it possible for you to verify any of the information above? In particular, I'm trying to trace the lives and origins of Daniel SHOUP & Jane LEE (supposedly from PA), and Jerome GIBSON & Hulda HEALY.

I'm looking for John Joseph Milton SALISBURY. I know that he died sometime before 1850. He was reportedly from Huron County, OH, but I don't have any information at this point to prove that. SALISBURY is spelled also as SAULSBERRY, SALESBURY, SALSBERRY and almost any other variety you can think of. The bury/berry endings seem to have been used interchangeably (some times in the same document). I think either he or his son were in the 123rd OVI Company C in the Civil War. That company was recruited near the end of the war in Huron County.

I am looking at Harvey ALLEN's children, Isaiah ROBINSON's siblings. Do you have a marriage record for Jane M. ALLEN? I know that in the 1880 census she was 13. I would have no idea when she could have gotten married, if at all. In reference to Jane, do you know if Jennie was a common nickname for Jane? Supposedly, my grandmother was named Jennie after her aunt. Do you have any books that may list death dates of Harvey or Lydia? According to my grandmother (Isaiah's child we believe), her grandparents died about two weeks apart of massive heart attacks. No idea what date. I have checked the Ohio death index, but it begins in 1908. Do you know where I could find information on the Fitchville Cemetery and who is buried there? Lastly, do you have any information about the 1890 census? I know that they were in a fire before they could be copied, but does anything about them exist?

Ken Shute Lookup Results--I don't have much to add on your ALLENs beyond what I already sent on 8/26/99. I did find a marriage date for a Harvey ALLEN, and a death date for a Jane ALLEN. I don't know if Jennie is a common nickname for Jane. I would lean to thinking it's not. I don't have any information on the 1890 Census. The Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book I cited for Harvey ALLEN as lot owner in Fitchville Cemetery is the authority for burials and tombstone inscriptions in the cemeteries of Huron County. It is over 1,000 pages in length, including an every -name index in the back. The only reference in the index to this Cemetery Inscriptions book to any ALLEN family member buried in Fitchville Cemetery is that of Harvey ALLEN (owner of lot 180), which I gave you in my email of 8/26/99. Details: 1. Huron County, Ohio Marriage Records, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992. Harvey ALLEN m. Lydia Ann KNAPP 24 Jun 1862. 2. I'm researching the KNOTT family that came from Hesse, Germany. There were four brothers that possibly came over to the U.S.A.: Gottlieb, John, Henry and Valentine KNOTT. Gottlieb was born 12 April 1831 in Hesse, Germany and married Elizabeth NUHN born 11 April 1842 in Germany. They married after they came to Ohio. Henry KNOTT was born 8 Sept 1839 in Hesse, Germany and married Martha E. (?) born 10 Sept 1835. John KNOTT was born 23 Sept 1836 in Hesse, Germany and married Carolina NUHN. Valentine KNOTT was born 7 Sept 1856 in Hesse, Germany and married Elizabeth WURMEST. I'm looking for the parents of these four brothers and was wondering if these NUHN ladies were sisters.

I am trying to find information on the following who lived in Huron (Hartland) from 1825-1835-37. Any help or clues greatly appreciated. Huron ancestors I am seeking are Joseph ROWE and wife Rebecca PARSONS WELLMAN. Joseph's father either Samuel or Joseph ROWE/Eleanor IRISH ROWE. Rebecca's family parents Samuel and Rebecca S TYLER WELLMAN; siblings Chauncey and Angeline FULLER ROWE. Angeline's parents were Moses and Laura ROWE FULLER. Jane who married Soloman MILLS. Samuel who married Jennete FULLER. Elvira who married a ? HADDOCK. Lois who married Elon SHEPARD. Joseph who married Sarah MESSEROL. John who married Hannah PETTY. They lived in Hartland Huron when they first came from Maine about 1825. Rebecca and Joseph were married in Henrietta Lorain 8-22-1841. They had three children there Nancy, Hannah and Robert before moving to Hastings, Barry MI. When Samuel WELLMAN died his wife moved to Lorain from Huron after 1835 when she could not make the family business (saw mill and grocery store) work. To avoid losing it all she sold and moved to Lorain. The saw mill was purchased with a man named Ransom and 1200 acres this was in Huron county. Also notes that I have say that Chaucey WELLMAN was educated in Lorain and after serving in the Civil War had a large farm in Henrietta before moving to Eaton county MI in 1876 having moved from Lorain to Williams county in 1869. Does anyone have any information on businesses in Hartland (Saw Mill and grocery) around that time frame? I have not checked the census for 1840 or 1850 for any of these if anyone has access to it and would be willing to check for me I would be greatly indebted!

Ken Shute Look Up Results -- Neither Thomas J. BOWLES/BOLLES or George W. BROWN appear in the Huron County, OH plat book for 1845. I have checked all of our Huron County, OH publications (including plat books and atlases) for any references to Thomas J. BOWLES without success, but I did find a Thomas J. BOWLES buried in the West End Cemetery, Berlin Township, Erie County, Ohio which appeared to be your BOWLES. I did find references to two different George W. BROWNS in our Huron County, OH publications, however. One was born 1842 and served in the civil war. The other was born 1815 and later moved to Illinois where he became a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. I don't know if either is the George W. I am new to this list and am looking for connections to my ggGrandfather, Lewis SMITH who was born October 27, 1825 in Ohio. Does anyone have any info on the children of the following SMITHs of Huron Co.? James SMITH married Anne WEBB March 20, 1822 Huron Co. Isaac SMITH married Laura BRONSON ca 1820's Penfield, Huron Co Isaac B. SMITH married Mrs. Martha COLE May 24, 1831 Huron Co. (Same Isaac? Second marriage?) Orson SMITH married September 29, 1833 Huron Co. Does anyone have any info whatsoever on the above people? I would like to know - where they brothers? Three SMITHs named James, Isaac and Orson all purchased land in Grant Co, Indiana in 1838 and were listed as being from Huron Co. Ohio and I believe them to be the persons listed above. In the 1840 census of Grant Co., Indiana are listed James and Isaac. The family story goes that in 1838, Lewis SMITH moved to Grant Co, IN with his family from Ohio. Process of elimination from the census of 1840 plus the land purchases show either James or Isaac above to be his father. I have exhausted all of my other resources in Iowa (where Lewis brought his family) and in Grant Co, Indiana. Lewis SMITH married in 1848 in Grant Co, IN to Mrs. Elizabeth WEBB.

I am looking for information on Ruth Ann WEBB, and Terrence / Ferrand MANNAHAN.. Ruth married Thomas TAYLOR in 1834, in Huron County. In 1839 she married my great great grandfather Terrence MANNAHAN. The wedding certificate is as Ferrand MANNAHAN and Ann WEBB. Terrence/Ferrand MANNAHAN and Ann WEBB were married in Berlin on May 24, 1839 by Joshua Philips M G. This was certified by Thomas E. Heydinger and Henry Limman Deputy Clerk on August 6, 1999. According to the information that we now have, the MANNAHAN's settled in Huron County in 1833. Wondering if Terrence/Ferrand MANNAHAN was connected to the family and how. Also wondering, since Terrence was born in Ireland in 1815, if he was naturalized in Huron County? Have hit a brick wall. Seems like there may have been another WEBB family in Huron County during the same period. Do not know if Thomas TAYLOR, Ruth's first husband died, or if they divorced? From what Ive learned there may have been two separate WEBB and MANNAHAN familes both residing in Huron County?
