This is a response from Ken Shute ([email protected]) Hi George and others who are researching forebears who fought in the Civil War. We've been researching Ethan W. GUTHRIE and Leroy L. GUTHRIE who served in the 25th OVI and 101st OVI respectively. We also have a James W. REED who served in the 123rd OVI. In case you haven't found it yet, there is a great web site which lists Ohio Civil War regiments. If you know the regiment your forebear served in, you click on the regiment number which links you to a page giving references, history, and battle history (Dyer's Compendium) for that particular regiment. The URL is: www.infinet.com/~lstevens/a/infantry.html. George, for your 55th OVI, the site is: www.infinet.com/~lstevens/a/cw55.html. The Maryland Public Library System offers a free on-line system to the public which, among other things, allows access to the card catalog of the Library of Congress. We can use this to find publications related to the OVI's we're interested in. Then, when we visit the Library, we can request the staff to pull the publication and photocopy any relevant items. In checking the card catalog today, I also looked for any publications related to the 55th OVI. I did find one: "Trials and triumphs: the record of the 55th Ohio Volunteer Infantry" by Hartwell Osborn. 1904. 364 pages. Library of Congress # E525.5 55th. So George, if you're not already aware of this publication, let us know and we'd be happy to >check it out for you on our next visit to the Library.
