Margaret Wooley
NOTES: William, a surveyor,
purchased land in Botetourt County as early as 1766. William,
David, and Hannah DeHart furnished materials for the wasr effort.
William signed his name Whooley on a 1788 indenture to buy land,
and Barbara signed with an X, her signature apparently being written
in by William. Virginia deed records; Annals of Southwestern Virginian
1769-1800; will, proved in Lancaster, Garrard County, Kentucky,
September 1804. "To my daughter Margaret all the remainder
of my estate, to be kept and continued in the hands of my Exors.
To be given to her or applied to her use at their discretion as
they see to her necessity requires, the maintenance of her, my
daughter Margaret, the remainder to be equally divided amongst
my children..." Apparently Margaret suffered a mental or
physical incpacity.
Wooleys are found in early
Elizabeth Citie, Virginia, and are thought to be progenitors of
this family; some researchers (or "listers") have included
names back to this family, but have supplied no proofs whatsoever.
Nancy
Hyatt
NOTES: Nancy's marriage
bond was signed by her brother, Elijah Hiatt, who was born 22
March 1771, per DAR records, the family bible, and supported by
census records. His signature on her bond is virtually identical
to his signature on the marriage bond of John Hiatt and Polley
Ashby (box 1, bond 84, 1799, Garrard County). Their father, William,
lived until 1817, but appears to have taken little lead in family
matters, perhaps due to the injuries he suffered during the Revolution.
William
Hiatt
Tabitha Johnson
William Hiatt:
- Born 22 October 1738,
Virginia
- Died 22 May 1817, Garrard
County, Kentucky
- Married Tabitha Johnson
(Johnston), 1771. Tabitha was born 1739, Virginia, and died 15
September 1811, Garrard County, Kentucky.
- Father:
- Mother:
1.
Elijah Hiatt
- b. 22 March 1771
- d. 7 February 1851
- m.
Martha 'Patsy" Gatewood Allen, 16 November 1817 (probably
2nd wife)
2. Nancy Hiatt/Hyatt
- b. 1779
- d. 23 August 1851, Ripley
County, Indiana
- m. Daniel Wooley, 26 January 1803, Garrard County, Kentucky
NOTES: There were almost
certainly other children, including John Hiatt, who married Polley
Ashby in 1799. Censuses, Ripley & Garrad Counties, 1850 and
earlier. DAR records, which include relevant entries for Elijah
and parents, but not siblings.
There seem to have been
two disctinct Hiatt/Hyatt families in Kentucky, both of which
sent descendants north to Ripley County. This Hiatt family may
have originated in Delaware, while the other appears to have it
roots in Maryland; some researchers believe both families originated
in Maryland. William Hiatt is accepted by DAR as the William Hiatt
who served as a private, Colonel David Hall's company of Foot,
Delaware Regiment. William is supposed to have had prior military
service, being wounded at Braddock's Defeat, Fort Duquesne, 9
July 1755. To aid in his recovery, William's father is supposed
to have sent him on a sea voyage around the Horn, accompanied
by a young mulatto-Indian slave. William's Delaware service points
to a connection with Thomas Hyatt, of St. George's Hundred, New
Castle County, Delaware, whose will is dated 16 February 1756.
The Johnson/Johnston family
claims descent from the Johnstons of Scotland, one line of which
became earls. Nothing is known of which supports this claim. Nor
is there evidence to contovert the claim.

NOTES: Rachel Ratteken is
named in her father's will, written 1769 and proved 1770. The
first three daughters, who appear to have been born of a previous
marriage, are named in a Power of Attorney, dated 1797, for recovery
of monies due them from their grandfather, Benjamin Williams,
of Pennsylvania. The money was to be recovered from Robert and
Archer Williamson. These two documents, along with the large gap
between the births of the children, strongly suggests that there
were two wives. The estimated births are based on ages of the
eldest known children, whether a bondsman was required for the
marriages, the power of attorney, and Patrick's will.
Isaac Miles joined his brothers-in-law
Elijah Trent and Samuel Lamkin Moore in executing the 1797 Power
of Attorney, acting on behalf of his wife. In Patrick Rattekin's
1804 will, Isaac Miles is mentioned as a son-in-law, while the
other married daughters are specifically name, implying that his
wife was deceased by this time.
Lawrence Ratekin was under
21 at the time of his father's will. His wife, Mary Moore, may
be a daughter of Samuel Lamkin Moore by a previous marriage.
