NOTES: Gee, op. cit. Helen
Almy West, A History of Hamilton Township, Mercer County, New
Jersey (1954). Donald W. South. The line becomes clouded at
this point. That Mary was a daughter of Benjamin and Keziah is
proved by the Bible of Oakey Van Arsdale/Vanosdol (op. cit.),
and further evidenced by the naming patterns, with Benjamin, Keziah,
and Lydia coming into the Vanosdol family names. William Malkin
warns us of the many Benjamin, Daniel, and Joseph Souths present
in the area of Windsor township, to be absolutely certain of the
descent, with the absence of explicit wills to rely on. He thinks
that the Benjamin named above might be a son of Joseph South,
Sr.. This Joseph died about 1812. Donald South, another premier
researcher of the South family, states that while the parents
of Benjamin South are not known with certainty, he is "certainly
the grandson of Thoms South and Dorothy Lippington South, his
wife." The continued use of certain names in the particular
area of concern is convincing to this researcher, even though
certain corrections may surface regarding particular individuals.
Basically; if Benjamin South is not this grandson, then he is
another. Donald South also warns us explicitly that the Gee book
is not to be trusted; it is replete with error and conjecture.
Some conjecture is necessary in lieu of the wills, bibles, etc.,
that we rely on; and family names, locations, and usage can carry
us to a point. However, Donald South worked closely with Mrs.
Gee for some time, and reports that she ignored many of the records
he supplied to her, and during his last contacts with her, seemed
to be unaware of even possessing those records. At any rate, I
basically follow the Malkin-D. South hypothoses; even if the parents
of Benjamin are uncertain, the grandfather and his spouse may
be taken up again with good faith (per the best records available).
It is more than possible that he had more than one grandson named
Benjamin; but once we hit Benjamin, we may feel sure we are back
on track.

the South-Lippington marriage.

NOTES: Hazie, op. cit.;
Bonham & Allin, op. cit., who begin with Nicholas, as hard
evidence proving Nicholas to be a son of George has not been discovered.
The link between Nicholas and George has been established, according
to researcher Maudin, although the exact relationship is not proven
-- were they brothers or father and son? George was transported
from Colchester, England, to Virginia, 20 June 1635, at age 31.
Mauldin feels that "It is much more rational, logical and
has more to support that as a matter of fact he was the father
of Nicholas Bonham..." and agrees with others that Miss Bishop
was a first wife, and probably the mother of Nicholas. Schenck,
Where the Raritan Flows, (1964); Mauly, History of Piscataway
Townsship 1660-1976. Nicholas appears in the 1669 records
of Piscataway. Built the first house in Bonhamtown, a 1 1/2 story
frame house which stood for some 200 years. Received a grant of
122 acres in Middlesex County, New Jersy, 1678, having been in
that state at least since the birth of Sarah, 1665. Took an oath
of allegiance as Sergeant Bonham, 1681. Belonged to a military
group under Captain Francis Drake. Founder of the Baptist Church,
Bonhamtown, 1689.

NOTES: Bonham, Bonham
& Related Family Lines, (1996); Huntington, A Genealogical
Memoir of the Lothrop-Lathrop Family, (Connecticut: 1884);
etc. The Fuller-Lathrop lines are among the most easily accessible
of our best documented lines, on-line or off. Further references,
which are numerous, will not be cited. It is of interest that
Samuel is believed to be the last surviving passenger who came
to America on bord the Mayflower, and that he was raised
in the household of William Bradford, following his parents' death
during the first, harsh winter of the Pilgrim's removal to America.
Also of interest, Thomas was married to Jane Lothrop by Captain
Miles Satndish, at the house of James Cudworth.
