NOTES: Lind. Various Howard
descendants have tried mightily to find a connection between the
Howards who emigrated to the Virginia Colony and the Howards,
Dukes of Norfolk. Tempting bits of evidence have been found which
have been used to bolster the connection, notably the use of the
Howard coat of arms from a signet ring, found on the will of of
John Howard. (William & Mary Quarterly, Volume 26: "Discovery
of the Coat of Arms of the Howard Family of Virginia and Maryland,"
by Francis B. Culver). However, as R. Saunders points out, there
is no evidence whatsoever that Matthew Howard, the emigrant, ever
used the Norfolk Howard seal or arms in any manner or cause. Then
as now, he reminds us, the rampant, illegal use of arms was common
in America and in England, in an attempt to bolster one's prestige
and status among the community.
