NOTES: Charles purchased 17 acres of Montgomery County land, 1794, from Charles Perry, (Liber E, folio 649), and sold this same land to John Shook, 1804. In 1799, Charles purchased the 309 acre Brandy Hall estate, Montgomery County, from David Stewart of Baltimore Town (Liber H, folio 457. In September 1809, he purchased a 55 1/2 acre tract from John Shook and Dorcas Ball Shook.

Will, dated 16 August 1809, leaves one-eighth of his residual estate to: son, David; son, Nathan; son, Edward; son, Denton; son-in-law, John Riddle; grandson, David Shook; children of daughter, Frances Lodge; and children of daughter, Charlotte Heeter. David Shook was also bequeathed a four yoear old black gelding. David Shook's mother, Arrana Porter Shook, had been dead some eleven years by this time.

George Heeter, who married Charlotte Porter, had children by his first wife, Catherine Space. Two of the daughters married sons of Charles and Helen Scott Porter. George, marrying Charlotte, created the intersting familial relationship of having his daughters also as his sisters-in-law.

NOTES: In 1724, Charles and two brothers, Peter and Philip, moved to Porter's Care, an estate of 400 acres near Ellicott City, Baltimore (now Howard) County, Maryland. In 1736, the brothers had pew 21 in Christchurch, Queen Caroline Parish.

A will or deed establishing beyond all doubt that this Charles is the father of Charles (b. 1735) has never surfaced, if one exists at all. Very possibly, Charles died before a will seemed necessary. However, there are so many similarities between names among the documented sibling of Charles and the documented descendants of Charles (b. 1735), that the relationship between the families is almost beyond reasonable doubt. Names common to descendants of Charles (b. 1711) and descendants of Charles (b. 1735), and also to the Shook descendants of the Porter family, include Charles, Frances, Peter, Catherine, Sarah, and most distinctively, Sylvanus. It is possible that Charles's brother, Philip, was the father of Charles (b. 1735); but, the name Philip was never used among the Shooks. Considering the high regard the Shooks had for their Porter kin, this would be most unusual, suggesting that Charles was, indeed, the father of Charles (b. 1735). David Porter Shook made the specific request that at least one descendant of each generation following him should include the name Porter, a tradition carried out for at least a few generations amongs the Shook and Skeen families which he begat.

After pondering the admittedly scant evidence linking Charles (b. 1735) and Charles (b. 1711) for several months, and consulting with descendants of Peter Porter (brother of Charles b. 1711), who are in accord with the evidence available, I do accept the father-son relationship as presented above, while looking forward to any hard documentation that might either confirm or disprove it.

Peter Porter

Frances (Dorsey?)

1. Peter Porter

NOTES: Porter (1937) says Peter was a metalsmith and a planter. Sailed on the ship Tiger, 21 September 1621, and settled near Sewell's Point, Elizabeth Cittie, Virginia (near present-day Norfolk). He and Frances (surname uncertain) were among the group of about one hundred families of dissenters from the Church of England in Virginia whoe went to Maryland, settling in the Severn River area of Anne Arundel County. They settled on the south side of the river at Bustion's Point, upstream from the Round Bay area. Both are believed to have been killed by Indians about 1652-53, leaving their infant son, Peter.
