Sabera Willcox

NOTES: Baptized 1 January 1764, Westfield Presbyterian Church, Essex County, New Jersey. Buried beside her daughter Anne, whose was born and died shortly before Sabra's own death. Ephraim Miller's will makes it very clear that Sabra was the mother of Elizabeth. NJ Calendar of Wills; cemetery records, et al., including research by Harman Clark.

NOTES: Littell, Ketts, and research shared by Harman Clark and Laird Wilcox. Although there is not a general accord regarding dates, that is to be expected. Each researcher, including myself, has given the most probably dates according to individual sentiments; yet the roster of children agrees among all researchers, and all dates are within a narrow range of years. It seems obvious that a marriage record will not be found, or it would surely have turned up by now. The marriage has been estimated as early as 1739, and as late as 1749; the earlier date would suggest that Sabera/Sabra was born a few years earlier than estimated. Again, although the connections seem to be well founded, hard proof establishing exact dates is lacking. Harman and Laird are among the most scrupulous and meticulous researchers, freely applying Occum's Razor. That these two researchers should come within a narrow range of years, which happily bolster my own endeavors, convinces me that the family outline is correct, even if the dates are indefinite.

NOTES: Richard was a shipbuilder. Will proved in New York, 15 April 1697. Research by Harman Clark, from NJ Calendar of Wills; Gardner, "Genealogical Collections 1665-1800," Vol. 29, etc. The statement that Richard Clarke was a grandson of that Richard Clarke who signed the Mayflower Compact has been disproven. Speculation exists that Elizabeth was surnamed Moore, but no documentation has been found.

Richard and Elizabeth are great-grandparents of Abraham Clark (1726 - 1794), signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Elizabeth Roosa

NOTES: The Roosa book (ibid.) gives Elizabeth's birthplace as Canterbury, England. This is almost certainly erroneous; it is not impossible that the Roosa family had merchant ties with England, and that she was, indeed, born in Canterbury while here parents lived there for mercantile reasons. It is far more likely, though, that Edward Riggs may have been a native of Canterbury, and the record has been somehow confused. Elizabeth was more likely christened Lysbeth, and born in the Netherlands.

2. Elizabeth (Lysbeth?) Roosa

3. Maria Roosa

NOTES: Donohue, "The Roosa Family of North America," (UCGS). Metie Gysbertor de Roos: Gysbertsor is an abbreviated form of Gysbertsdochter, meaning nothing mor than 'Daughter of Gysbert,' the usual means of identifying folks at this time. Heyman's patronymic of Gysbert tells us the same. We would hope that more than one Gysbert lived in the area!
