Elnora Ensminger

NOTES: Audra Vanosdol, Hopewell Cemetery, Q.C. Stevens. One of my earliest memories is of being seated upon the lap of a wrinkled little woman, and feeling frightened that I might somehow break her. That turned out to be a pose for a four-generation photograph, at a family reunion. Dad told me that shortly after we returned home, some 5 hours away, he was called almost at once with the news that his grandmother had died, and had to turn around and drive right back down to Ripley County again for the funeral.

He was superintendent for the building of the Otter Creek covered bridge, for which he was paid $42, in 1844. He built the Purcell Bridge over Laughery Creek, one mile northeast of Versailles, at a cost of $3,571. It was destroyed in 1956, by the creation of the Versailles State Park reservoir. In 1889, he built the Pipe Stem bridge over Ripley Creek, north of Pierceville, at a cost of $984. This landmark was destroyed by vandals on Hallowe'en, 1970. Catharine Brandenburg was almost certainly a member of the family of several Brandenburgs who appear in Jay and adjoining Indiana and Ohio counties. Ensminger family bible.

The Biographical Record states that Frances Ensminger married Obadiah Winters in Jay County, and that Caroline Ensminger married Benjamin Hawkins there. No record of their marriages exists in the courthouse records, nor in the courthouse records of any adjoining Indiana county. Possibly a marriage by a minister whose returns went to an Ohio county?
