Rufus J. Stephens, 1848
R. J. Stephens is the son of Gwyn Stephens and Miley Bowden. His grandfather and
grandmother were David and Sarah Stephens. His great-grandfather, Thomas Stephens, came
from South Carolina to Fentress County and became one of the pioneer settlers.
On his mother's side his grandfather was Elias Bowden, q. v.
John Bowden, his great-grandfather, came from England and settled in Franklin County,
North Carolina.
He was married to Sarah E. Mullinix in 1872. She was a daughter of Eli Mullinix. He has two sons--Sylvester and Jasper-both of whom
have taught school in this county.
He is a member of the Masonic Lodge. at Clarkrange, and he and his wife are members of the
M. E. Church.
He owns and operates a nice farm on the river below Boatland. He has a large number of
colonies of bees and sells honey nearly every year.
