George and Lizzie Graham Wright

Lizzie GrahamWashington Wright and Sarah Ann Curry were married in Maury Co, TN, March 23, 1856 They had 3 children born in TN, Thomas Jefferson. 1858. George Washington, 1865, and Anna, 1870

In 1872, Washington and Sarah Wright, their 3 children. and her parents, James III and Elizabeth Curry, made the long trip from TN to TX They stopped in Bell Co, but quickly moved on to Coryell County, settling along the Cowhouse Creek in what is now the Ft Hood Army Reservatlon.

James III died in 1876 Sarah Wright gave birth to a second daughter, Tennie. January, 1877, and apparently suffering from complications,died March, 1877, at the age of 43. Washington Wright died prior to 1880. Tennie died as a child, and Elizabeth Curry died in 1898. James III. Elizabeth. Washington. Sarah, and Tennie were all buried in the Salem Cemetery and were later removed to Restland Cemetery in Gatesville.

Washington and Sarah Wright's first daughter, Anna. married and moved to the San Antonio area. George Washington first married Nannie Liverett in 1890. They had two sons and she died about 1895. In 1896 George Wright married Lena Berry. In early 1897 she died in childbirth.

On September 20. 1898, George Wright married Malissa Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Graham. Lizzie was a daughter of Curtis Beason and granddaughter of the Elder Jesse Graham, head of the large Graham family of Coryell County. George and Lizzie had 8 children: George Dewey (deceased). Ocie Annie, Archie Spivy, Gertie Lee (deceased), C.B., Alice Malisa and Frankie Juanita. A daughter. Icie, died at a few days old.

All the children except Juanita were born on the homeplace on the Cowhouse Creek and attended school in Salem. About 1921 the family moved to "The Old Mohney Place" in the Antelope Community. From here the children attended schools in Eliga and Antelope and later, Gatesville. In the 1930s the family had a Model T and would attend church meetings once a month in Eliga. Occasional trips were made to Gatesville which was a great distance for them then. George Wright and his family farmed their 508 acres in the Antelope area until Ft Hood Reservation was set up in 1942, at which time they left their land and purchased another piece of property. only to have that one taken away for Ft Hood also.

By this time all their children were grown and they were advancing in age. so they moved into Gatesville and lived out their lives among their children and grandchildren Lizzie Wright died in 1954, and George Wright in 1961. Both are buried in Restland Cemetery in Gatesville.
