Joseph Wood Beaty and Mary Jane Crabtree Beaty
Joseph Wood Beaty and Mary Jane Crabtree Beaty
William and Lucinda Beaty were early settlers of Coryell County.
William was born 1804 or 1805 in Kentucky. Lucinda was born May 9, 1815 in Tennessee. They
were married in Missouri about 1833 or 1834, and had eight children born in Missouri. They
left Missouri in 1854 and settled in Coryell County near Station Creek. They had several
yoke of oxen, which was a real asset in those days. Oxen pulled the wagon for travel and
pulled the plow for planting crops. William died 11-25-1856. Beatys were among the first
families to settle Oglesby. Lucinda owned land where the town of Oglesby now is. In 1873,
she divided the land among her children. In later years, at least six of the children sold
their portion to William Oglesby. Their children were Thomas (1834-1835), Richard
(1835-1867), Malinda (Brown) 1838-1893, Sarah (Draper) 1842-1895,
Joseph 1845-1906, Jehue, 1847-1879, John, 1850-1927, Frances Ann (Brown) 1853-1894. Their
children married in Coryell County. Lucinda died August 17, 1876, buried Blackfoot
(Davidson) Cemetery.
None of the children in our family knew Grandpa and Grandma Beaty, Joseph Wood Beaty and
Mary Jane Crabtree Beaty. They died before we were born. Joseph was born about 6 am
3-10-1845, the 5th child of William and Lucinda Beaty. Mary was born 9-22-1850. They were
married May 3, 1868. They had twelve children. William Leonard (1869-1933) married Anney
Fellers. His second wife was Mary Hudgens; John Thomas (1871-1929) married Lula Lowery;
Malinda Ellen (1873-1893) married Samuel Pruett; James Louis
(1875-1942) married Maude Reed; Martha Lucinda (1877-1917) married John Floyd. Her second
husband was Bob McAnully; Sarah Frances (1879-1967) married Buddy Fellers; George Franklin
(1881-1940) married Dean Hudgens; Susan Donie [?] (1883-?) married Lawrence Butler; Joseph
Wesley (1884-1972) married Susan Johnson; Mary Elizabeth (1891-1974) married Nial [?]
Phillips, her second husband was Claude Lowery; Charles
Webster (1893-1961) married Willie Melton; and Jahue Richard
(1898-1950) married Maggie Mars.
About 1905, Grandpa decided to go to Indian Territory (Oklahoma). He sold his land at
Pulltite and packed everything in two covered wagons. Before they left, they spent the
weekend in Oglesby with their daughter Martha and her family. They and several relatives
made homemade ice cream. Grandma remarked that they would live to eat ice cream again, but
they probably would not live to eat it together again. They farmed in Oklahoma a year or
two, then went to Crowell, Texas. Grandpa died March 22, 1906, buried at Crowell.
Grandma and the three children that were still at home, Mary Elizabeth (called Lizzie),
Charlie and Richard returned to Coryell County to take care of Martha, who had cancer at
the time. After Martha died, Grandma, Charlie and Richard (Lizzie had married) moved near
Pecan Grove. After Charlie married, Grandma and Richard went to Gainesville to help Louis
raise his two daughters. Grandma died there August 26, 1918, buried at Spring Creek, Cooke
County. Richard returned to Coryell County. He married in 1927, and lived near Oglesby all
his life.
