Jacob McGee was the son of John McGee and Fanny Deal of Newton, Catawba County, N.C. John was born on 3 February 1789 and died 5 March 1878. He was a gunsmith and blacksmith by trade. Fanny was born in 1791 and her death occurred before the 1860 census. The 1850 census gives John's place of birth in Mecklenburg County, N.C. The "History of the Wendell Miller Family" compiled by James T. Miller in 1924 states he was born in Tennessee and came to N.C. as a young man. John is buried at Old St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Newton, N.C. If Fanny is buried beside him she doesn't have a marker.

Jacob McGee was born 1 April 1818 in Lincoln County, now Catawba County, N.C. He married Mary Adaline Sigman on 7 August 1838 in Lincoln County, N.C. Mary was born 1 August 1820, Catawba County, N.C., the daughter of Barnet Sigman Jr. and Polly Fry.

Jacob and Mary Adaline lived in Newton, Catawba County, N.C. Newton was laid off around 1842, at the time when Catawba County was being formed from land broken off from the then-sprawling Lincoln County. The location of Newton was donated by private property owners. On April 1843 the land of Jacob McGee and two others were selected as the town site. The new village bordered on the waters of Clark's Creek.

Jacob and Mary Adaline were the parents of six children: John Calvin, Mary Jane, James Monroe "Jonas", Hosiah Elcanah "Hosea", Eli Elijah, and William Henry. All were born in Catawba County, N.C.

John Calvin McGee (8 May 1839-16 June 1840) and Mary Jane McGee (22 February 1841-11 July 1841) died in infancy and are buried at Old St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Newton, N.C.



James Monroe "Jonas" McGee (19 May 1842-2 June 1923) was the only one of the surviving children that stayed in N.C. He married Jane E. Setzer (17 April 1842-27 April 1873) on 12 December 1877[sic should be 1867] in Iredell County, N.C. They had two daughters. Lula Medora McGee (30 March 1869-28 February 1932) married E. McLelland Massey and remained in Iredell County. Carrie E. McGee (1871-?) married John Allen and lived in California. Jonas's wife Jane died at the age of 31 and is buried at Sharon Lutheran Church Cemetery, Statesville, N.C. Jonas later married Candus E. Bowman (8 February 1853-27 May 1919) on 22 January 1880 in Catawba County, N.C. They had seven children: Eva Jane, Dilly, Edward, Carrol, Nola, Garland Baxter and Lilly. James Monore "Jonas" McGee and his second wife Candus E. Bowman are buried at Friendship Lutheran Church Cemetery, Taylorsville, N.C.



Hosiah Elcanah "Hosea" McGee (10 March 1844-7 June 1924) went to Arkansas in 1866 and settled in Harrisburg, Poinsett County, Ar. (See Hosiah Elcanah "Hosea" McGee History) Eli Elijah McGee (8 April 1846-28 September 1925) married Francis Catherine Best (13 January 1845-13 June 1938) on 12 December 1866 in Iredell County, N.C. They had four daughters and three sons: Mary Etta "Molly" William Jovan, Elizabeth "Lizzy", Era, Laura, John A, and Roy E. McGee. Eli Elijah McGee and Francis Catherine Best are buried at Citizens Cemetery, Clarendon, Texas.

William Henry McGee (28 May 1848-29 July 1918) married Sara Ann Cantley (6 November 1852-19 December 1932) on 5 November 1873 in Douglas County, Illinois. They had six children: William Marmaduke, Harry Redmon, George Vivran, Ira D., Nora and May died in infancy. William Henry McGee and his wife Sara Ann Cantley are buried in Payne Cemetery, Brocton, Edgar County, Illinois.

Jacob McGee and Mary Adaline Sigman were married ten short years. Jacob was only 30 years old when he died 6 September 1848. He was buried at Old St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Newton, N.C.



Mary Adaline Sigman McGee later married J. George Deal (12 December 1803-10 May 1883) on 22 August 1858 in Iredell County, N.C. They had two daughters. Sarah Ellen Deal (24 July 1861-16 October 1952) married Martin L. Shook on 21 February 1878 in Iredell County, N.C. Sarah Ellen and her husband are buried in Rising Star Cemetery, Rising Star, Texas. Harriet Eudora Deal (17 October 1862-2 February 1954) married John Goble on 19 May 1880 in Iredell County, N.C. Harriet Eudora and her husband are buried in Beulah Church Cemetery, Statesville, N.C.

Mary Adaline (Sigman) McGee and J. George Deal are buried at Sharon Lutheran Church Cemetery, Statesville, N.C.
