Bridget Blaney and Alexis Gagné

Bridget2 Blaney (Patrick1, DanielA) was in St-Gilles c. 1836 in Québec, according to the 1851 census. [1]

On 28 September 1858 she married Alexis Gagné, also in St-Gilles. [2] Alexis was born c. 1836 in Québec. [3] He was the son of Joseph Gagné and Marie Gandreau of St-Sylvestre. The groom was about 24 years of age, the bride about 22. Bridget's brother Daniel was a witness. [4]

The family farmed in St-Gilles, where they appeared in the census in both 1861 and 1871. Bridget was literate but Alexis was not. The children attended school. [5] In 1887 Bridget emigrated to the US, where she was living in 1900 in Berlin, Coos Co. NH. It is unclear whether she left after the death of her husband or he accompanied her. [6]

Bridget Blaney and Alexis Gagné had the following chidren:

+ i. Jean-Baptiste Gagné was born in Québec. According to the the 1900 U.S. census, he was born in January 1858, which puts his birth nine months before his parents wedding. A more likely year of birth is 1859, the year suggested by the 1861 Quebec census, which listed him as two years of age.[7]
ii. Marie Marguerite Gagné was born in October 1860. She died at the age of 4 years on 30 October 1864 in St-Sylvester, although her parents were residents of St-Gilles. Uncle Daniel Blaney was a witness. [8]
ii. Thomas Gagné was born 13 October 1861 and was baptized on the 20th of that month in St-Gilles. Jean Gagné and aunt Margaret Blaney were the sponsors. [9] Thomas died 17 January 1864 at the age of two years and three months and is buried in the same parish. [10]
ii. Marie Gagné was born 30 May 1863 and baptized the next day in St-Gilles. Uncle Daniel Blaney and his wife Joanna Evoy were the sponsors. [11]
iv. Anne Gagné was born on 12 November 1865 in St-Gilles and baptized the next day. Her uncle Thomas Blaney and Marie Gagné were the sponsors. [12]
+ v. Bridget Gagné was born 27 April 1867 in St-Gilles. [13]
vii. Michel Gagné was born 30 September 1868 and was baptized at home on 4 October. Uncle Pierre Gagné was the godfather. [14]
viii. Joseph Gagné was born 13 January 1870 and baptized two days later in St-Gilles. His uncle, Michael Burns, was the godfather, and aunt Gracy Boyle the godmother. [15] In 1900 Joseph was living with his mother in the 1st ward in Berlin, Coos Co. NH where he worked as a day laborer. He was not a U.S. citizen. [16]
+ ix. Louis Alexis Gagné was born 7 July 1871 in St-Gilles and was baptized the next day. [17]
x. Marie Angile Gagné was born 9 June 1873. She was baptized in St-Gilles on 12 June, although her family's farm now fell within the newly-created parish of St-Narcisse-de-Beaurivage. [18]
