My grandfather Baily was born in Freeport, OH, and graduated from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery at the University of Cincinnati in 1893.

The Ohio College of Dental Surgery was founded by the Ohio Legislature in 1845, the second dental school in the U.S. (the first was in Baltimore). It was founded as a private institution, but could not compete with the state-supported insitutions of the time so affiliated with the University of Cincinnati in 1888. Unfortunately, their sponsorship ceased in the early 20th century and in June of 1926 after 81 years the college closed, graduating its last class. My grandparents were married Oct. 27, 1897 in Indianapolis and within two years had headed west to the booming mining town of Silverton, Colorado. They had a pre-fabricated house built in Silverton that had been sent out from Indianapolis by rail. The distinctive Baily House still stands on historic Reese St. in Silverton. Dr. Baily had suffered from typhoid fever about 1895, and it apparently caught up with him again in Silverton. He died when my father was eleven years old, in 1914. Grandmother Baily returned to Indianapolis with my father and Dr. Baily's body which was buried at Circle Grove Cemetery in Spiceland, IN. Read his obit. Dr. Baily was an avid photographer with his Kodak "pocket" camera. His photographs of Silverton and the mines reside in the archives of the San Juan Historical Society, and a few of them can be found here.

Pauline Jane Osborn was third of the fifteen children born to Charles and Mary Osborn of Clinton County, Ohio. She had been a student at Westown School, and after Jesse's death returned there to work as a dorm mother. She returned to Colorado, to Denver, in 1945 to help raise her grandson, Nathan, and stayed with us until I went to high school. In 1960, she returned to Wilmington, Ohio, to live out her years with her remaining siblings and died there in 1965. She is buried at Sugar Grove Cemetery in Wilmington.
