General Notes:
From: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, September 17, 1999 7:53 AM My GGrandfather was an integral part of my life until I was 15 years old. I have been fortunate to have found his parents; a sibling that was never recorded on a census (born after census in 1870 and died before census in 1880); marriage licenses of both of his sisters; names of his 2 half sisters; pictures of gravesite in Canada of his father; marriage license of his parents in England. I have been fortunate.....but I want MORE! Here is my line: My GGrandfather, John WINDERS b. 1868 in England His parents were: John WINDERS b. 1838 in England and his mother, Eliza BLADES b. 1845 in England. Their marriage license (1865, Marske, England) states that she was a servant and that he was a miner. It states that his father was a laborer and his name was, what else....John WINDERS. John and Eliza came to America in 1870 to Philadelphia where 2 more children were born. They migrated through IL and ended up in What Cheer, Keokuk Co., IA. Evidently there was no work and in 1884, John went to Canada to work in the mines. After only being there a few weeks, he was killed in a mining accident on 30 June 1884.
I would like to find and correspond with anyone else from this family. My GGrandfather's brother (the one that lived past 10 years) was Charles and he was living in Mystic, IA in 1910 when Eliza died. The sisters' names were Sarah Jane (she married Isaac HOWARD in Keokuk Co., IA) and Elizabeth Ann (she married William R. COWAN in Keokuk Co., IA). Eliza remarried after John (the father died) to James GUNDRY in Keokuk Co., IA. Thanks for any help, Roberta Duvall Hammer KS

My BLADES are from Marske as far as I can determine. At least that is where my gggrandparents were married. John WINDERS married Eliza BLADES in Marske in 1865. He was a widowed miner and Eliza was a servent. Her parents were listed as William BLADES and I later discovered her mother's name (on Eliza's marriage license to her second husband, James GUNDRY and Eliza's sister's (Phebe) marriage license in Keokuk County, Iowa) Hannah Brabrick or Brabrook. It was listed one way on one license and the other way on the other license.
John and Eliza had my ggrandfather in 1868 in England and then in 1870 traveled to America. We have been told they came through Philadelphia, but no proof of that yet. Then they migrated through Illinois and settled in What Cheer, Iowa. John died in a mining accident in 1884 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Eliza and the children were still in What Cheer. Later Eliza married James GUNDRY and supposedly had two more girls.
Eliza, Phebe, George all were in the USA. Eliza's obit (in 1910) states that there were other siblings still in England. I have had no success in locating either George BLADES nor Phebe BLADES who, in 1910 was married to A. C. STUCKEY and had a daughter Dora (age unknown).
I have a couple of leads on 2 daughters and 1 other son of Eliza and John, but am still working on those leads at this time. The daughters married Isaac Howard and William R. Cowan and in 1910 all three of the children were living in Iowa. Any help sincerely appreciated. Thank you, Roberta Duvall Hammer
From: "Roberta Hammer" <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, November 24, 2000 3:22 PM [snip] In regards to Bertha Winders. She was my grandmother. Her full name was Bertha Eliza Winders. She was born January 22, 1893 in (probably Richmond), Ray Co., Missouri. She died in Columbus, Cherokee Co., KS on January 5, 1968.
I have so many brick walls on this line, but have been able to find that: John Winders m. Eliza Blades - (Eliza's parents were William BLADES/Hannah BRABRICK or BRABROOK. Son: John Winders m. Nellie Stevens And of course John and Nellie had Bertha. John and Hannah had a daughter Phebe (Phoebe) who married A. W. Stuckey in Keokuk County, Iowa. John and Hannah had a son named George who at the time of Eliza's death in 1910 was living close to Des Moines. A.W. Stuckey and Phebe had a daughter named Dora.
