Hi,
I needed to send a
correction that I received today from Chris Kraft. I think that the letter explains it better than I could. Could you please disconnect Samuel Anderson
from James who we thought was his father, as I have? Thank you.
Alice Gedge
Hi Christine! I left you a phone message a while back, but
I'm not sure if you got it. I just
recently got online, didn't have the means to email you before.
I wanted to tell you that Elizabeth Anderson b ca 1754, daughter of William, DID NOT marry her first cousin
Samuel the son of James. James'
son Samuel married Sarah Young, moved
to KY and eventually died in IN. I do
not know who the other Samuel was, but have been trying to find out for many
years, because he may be my ancestor.
My earliest known ancestor is Samuel b 1782 VA, married Lydia Powell,
daughter of Richard and Sarah Powell of Shenandoah County in 1805 and moved to
Belmont Co OH in 1808, later settling permanently in Monroe/Noble Co OH. I know his father's name was Samuel also,
because the marriage record lists his father's name. So my Samuel's father would have been a Samuel Anderson b ca
1750, thus the perfect age to have married Elizabeth. Do you have any idea what became of them? They lived in Augusta Co for about 15 years,
bought and sold land several times with his brother William, and then
disappeared from the scene around 1790.
I have never been able to discover what became of them. If you have any info which could shed light
on this subject, I certainly would like to hear from you. If not, at least please correct the mistaken
information in your records. Here is my
line back to Samuel: George Elmer
Anderson b 1911 IL d 1978 IL; John Harvey Anderson b 1870 IL d 1953 IL; Ezekiel
Anderson b 1844 OH d 1932 IL; Ezekiel Anderson b 1813 OH d 1844 OH; Samuel
Anderson b 1782 VA d 1867 OH; Samuel Anderson b ca 1750 d ???? Happy hunting! Linda

Patrick - Regarding the
Samuel Anderson who married Elizabeth Anderson
ca 1775 in Augusta Co, this Samuel was not the son of James of the
"4 brothers". Jame's son
Samuel married Sarah Young and migrated to Madison Co KY. He died in IN in 1832. The Samuel who married Elizabeth had brothers
named William and Thomas and their father was also named Samuel. Samuel and William administered the estate
of Thomas in 1776 in Augusta Co. I
would appreciate any info anyone may have re Samual and Elizabeth. The info on your page blows me away. I've been gathering Virginia Andersons for a
long time, and your stuff has helped me a lot in figuring out who
belongs to whom. THANK YOU.

My John Anderson who
married Rebecca did not have an W for intial of a middle name. There was a John
W. Anderson in the same area and may have been related but, Williams son John
did not have the intial W. in his name.
The source everyone
seems to use is from Mary Lynn Steward. I have read this book and her own
resorces are sketchie at best. I traveled all over to verify my research. I
even went to Philidelphia to their historical library and reseached when the
Andersons came in to PA. They were not Irish. They were from Scotland and along
with other clans fled the English teranny by way of Ireland to the colonies. I
have read the english tax records in that library and read the what Jane
Anderson Henninger wrote her family bible. It is in a prvate family collection
in TN. And the family no longer allows viewing of the bible and even had to
have the phone number changed because as genealogy became more popular life
became a nightmare for them. Calls, letters, ect. from all over. I have lot of
history on this line and have crawled through brush, climbed hills to old
Anderson family cemetaries looking and verifying all I have. Went to tiny towns
and big cities. Interviewed people, family, cousins in-laws, out-laws, ect. I
was not content to put down what someone wrote nearly 100 years ago. I noticed
I misspelled Rebecca Melissa Maxwells middle name early. Sorry. I hope this
helpes.

hard to find the right one. Hopefully, you might have some source or
documentation that would help. I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Hi Pat...I think I
posted a message on the site as well, thru the surname link, but then found
your address. Okay, my question is this: I am tracing the line from WILLIAM
ANDERSON of the "Four Brothers" .
He was b. in 1720, Ulster Ireland and died 1792 in VA. His first wife
was Margaret ??, his second was Elizabeth Campbell. His son George m. Mary
"Polly" Breeden. George & Mary had 14 children: William P was b.
10-7-1792 d. 06-29-1855. William P m. Susannah VonFossen, Phoebe Hendrick,
Sophia Brent. William & Susannah
had a son named John who m. Rebecca Ann Anderson (a first cousin), and then
Martha Johnson. John and Martha had 3 children: George, Mary Jane, Thomas
Jefferson. George m. Dorcas Ann Patterson and had 3 children: Andrew, Avesta,
Melissa Jane. Melissa Jane m. John
Alfred Smith. John & Melissa had 3 children: Amzi Dumont, Margaret, Minor
Claude. Minor Claude m. Anna Lee Tranum
and of their children, Barbara Lee Smith is my husbands paternal grandmother.
I havent found any
reference to this line of William/the four brothers. Do you have it? If not,
how can I get it to you? I "inherited" pages and pages of compiled
notes (manually typed as well as some written) from Barbara Lee, and am slowly
(VERY slowly) ploughing thru them.
Please let me know, if
you already have this line, how I may access it. I enjoyed the site a great
deal, and emailed a link to a fellow George & Dorcas searcher--following
the Dorcas lineage, whereas I follow George!

page of credits for her work in making hats. H e charged his own son Jacob room
and board while he was an apprentice , taken out of his credits for making
hats. He also made payments t o his brother Andrew. (6) By 1808 he had a
flourishing shop in his ho me, which was well located for this purpose at what
is now (1985) 23- 25 North Main Street.
(5) 1809, Nov: Purchased for $1,000, from
his father's estate, th e house that his father had lived in, lot 15, Lexington,
VA, bounde d by Main & Henry Sts. and 2 lots of John Campbell, containing
1/2 ac re.
(5) 1810, 22 Dec: Wrote a letter to Gen.
Breckenridge to apply fo r the bounty warrants for the Wallace heirs. He
enclosed depositions . Two warrants of 400 acres each in behalf of Adam and
Andrew Wallac e were issued.
(4,5) 1811: Began building large brick
townhouses at 23 North Mai n St.,
Lexington, Rockbridge
Co., VA, on the land purchased from his father's

Library, and provided provis ional
shelving of its books
in the hat shop until Franklin Hall was built i n 1826.
(5) 1818, 22 Jan: Bought, for $4,326, a 103
acre farm on the West s ide of
Sarah's Run,
Rockbridge Co., VA, just south of Lexington. The house o n the
farm in 1987 was at

Bollivar Mill, 200 yards from the John Wallace house he had purchas ed. Since
it cost too much to transport the corn he raised on his far m to market, he
distilled it into corn whiskey at the mill. By 1854 , the Bolliver Mill

and rye, a saw mill,
and a distillery in one large stone building.
(5) 1827, 7 Apr: Bought, with a partner, 136

the Rockbridge Co. Cour t, serving as President of the Court much of this
period.
(4) c.1829: Built a house next door to his
at 21 N. Main St., Lexin gton, VA as further living space for his family and a

at 23 N . Main. In the north wall is a brick dated 1783.
(6) c.1830: From about 1830 his hat business
called itself "John Ru ff & Son." The advertisements it ran in
the Lexington newspaper too k to using exclamation points as they added
"FUR HATS!" and "SILK HAT S!" to those they regularly
offered.
(5) 1830's: His primary occupation was
farming. He bought real esta te with
partner John Jordan, a
Lexington builder. Invested in the James Rive r and
Kanawha Canal.
(5) 1832: Cyrus McCormick made the first
test of his reaper on John 's farm at John's invitation before a crowd of 75.
The ground was une ven and the reaper's revolving wheel shelled considerable
grain and c rushed the straw. John was angry and ordered Cyrus to remove the
mach ine from his property. William Taylor, ownmer of the adjacent farm, i
nvited Cyrus to continue the test in his field where the ground was m ore even,
and it performed more satisfactorily.
(5) 1833: After Cyrus McCormick spent the
winter making improvement s to his
reaper, John signed a
testimonial as to its value.
(5) 1838, 10 May: Applied to Gov. David
Campbell for additional bou nty warrants for Wallace heirs. Stated he was
leaving for Ohio in 1 0 or 12 days to make locations in the Virginia Military
District.
(6) 1838: John Ruff & Son partnership
dissolved, with both his so n Jacob and John asserting that it had been broken
by mutual consent . Thereafter father and son continued their own businesses
with the s on tending to diversify the goods he offered for sale.
(4) 1838: Advertised that on his lot was
"a large stable and ever y house
necessary for the
comfortable residence of a large family."
(5) 1844: Took his final trip to Ohio. He
went by horseback to Char leston,
Marysville,
Bellefontaine, London, Columbus, Chillicothe, and back t o Charleston &
Lexington. His holdings were in the Visiros area on th e Little
Darby River. On 23
Dec., he wrote his son John A. from London, OH, st ating he
had found five
tenants, 4 of then squatters on his tract. He had surv eyed the
property and prepared
leases for improvement. He planned to spend Chr istmas
eveing with his cousin
Abraham Park, who lived six miles west of Circ leville.
He promised to be back
in Lexington by January 5th or 6th.
(4) 1850: Deeded his house at 21 N. Main to
his son Jacob M. Ruff f or $2,500 as an advance on his inheritance. The deed
gave Jacob permi ssion to build a future town house between the house and his
own at 2 3 N. Main.
(4) 1850: North Main street was severely
graded and lowered to mak e the street less steep. The basement of his house at

potential abuse.
(6) A street in Lexington is named in his
honor, an old block-lon g way that
has more the character
of a lane than a street. Ruff Lane runs throug h the
wide piece of meadow
land between Main St. and Randolph St., Lexingto n, VA. It was on Gray's map of
1877 and has always had a few houses o n it without
becoming fully
developed. It had no name for at least the 1st 150 yea rs of
its existence, but in
the effort of 1912 to name every public way i n town, it
was called Ruff Lane.

Marriage to Isabella
Coulter: (1c,5) 2 Dec 1835, Rockbridge Co., VA . (5) by
John D. Ewing, Presbyterian Minister. She d/o
George Coulter.
Death: (6) c.1880.
(4) Graduated from
Washington College.
(6) c.1830: From about
1830 his father's hat business called itself " John Ruff &
Son." The advertisements it ran in the
Lexington newspaper took to u sing
exclamation points as they added "FUR HATS!"
and "SILK HATS!" to tho se they
regularly offered. Jacob seemed to have the
special skills the busin ess
required, which was not only that of making
and selling hats, but o f managing
the sale of the considerable amount of
produce in kind that came i n from
many customers. (3,4) Had a share in his
father's hat business, an d continued
it on his own.
(6) 1838: John Ruff
& Son partnership dissolved, with both Jacob an d his father
John asserting that it had been broken by
mutual consent. Thereafte r father
and son continued their own businesses with
the son tending to diver sify the
goods he offered for sale.
(3) 1840-1845: Was
Treasurer of Virginia Military Institute (VMI). (6 ) 1840-
1844.
(4) 1843: Was a
justice.
(2,3) 1850: Bought from
his father John Ruff for $2,500 as an advanc e on his
inheritance the house his father had built
c.1829 at 21 North Main S treet,
Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA. It was next
door to his father's hous e and is
described as a Valley Federal townhouse, with
chesnut hand hewn beam s and a
stable. It had been built as additional
living space for the famil y and a
showroom for the family's hat factory. The
deed gave Jacob permissio n to build a future town house between his house and
his father's. I t was never
built, but the chimney was cantilevered to
accomodate it. The hous e was
purchased in 1974 from the Historic Lexington
Foundation by Mr. & Mr s.
G. Otis Meade II, who restored it c.1976. (6)
This house is now (198 5) the
offices of Mead Associates, Realtors.
(3) 1850: Main Street,
on which Jacob's house was located, was regrad ed and
lowered, exposing the basement and adding
half a story to his house . The
entrance had to be moved to the side.
(4) 1853: Was mayor of
Lexington, VA.
(4) 1850's: Was on the
Board of the North River Navigation Co., whic h was to
extend James River Canal service to
Lexington.
(5) 1855: Was living in
Lexington, VA.
(6) His business was
virtually destroyed by the Civil War.
(6) In the early
post-war years he managed a slight recovery in his b usiness.
(6) 1867, Feb-1868,
Aug: Served as Mayor of Lexington, VA. He came t o hold this
position as a result of circumstances that
grew out of the politica l confusion
that prevailed under Reconstruction legislation
as to who was entitl ed to vote.
The winners of the 1867 election, John
Letcher and James K. Edmondso n, found
the election results "open to different
interpretations." Although L etcher
won the majority, the Circuit Court of
Rockbridge Co. found that a
considerable number of his supporters were
not valid voters under th e new
requirements. Edmundson declined the position
under these conditions . The
Town Council then chose Jacob Ruff. His term
was brought to an earl y end when
a new group in Lexington that had never held
office and which was ab le to
swear that it had never voluntarily taken up
arms against the U.S. G overnment
emerged and stood ready to join the Town
Council. Rather than join t his
group or to compromise with it in any way,
Jacob Ruff resigned.
(6) Shortly after
resigning as mayor, he and his wife left Lexington.
