<Hello Christine,
I have some news about
one of the descendants of John Anderson found on your page at: <A

here: Descendants of John Anderson</A>
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~anderson/others/johna.html
I wrote to you last
month and told you of finding Elizabeth Anderson there and thinking she was my
fifth great grandmother who married Robert Carruth (listed there as
Caruth). Elizabeth is listed as number
36. I have since figured out that even
though the information for Elizabeth (#36) does not match my fifth great
grandmother's, it does match for another Anderson/Carruth union. I will copy notes from another letter I
wrote to the Carruth E-mail list for this subject below. You will see that the information I have is
for a Mary Anderson instead of Elizabeth Anderson. I hope that maybe there was a combining of Mary and Elizabeth's
information on marrying someone named Caruth or Carruth and you may have something
on Elizabeth Anderson that married Robert Carruth. I look forward to hearing back from you on what you think of
this.
Best wishes,
Harvey Carrouth

<< I found one thing knew to report that may
interest some of you. Adam CarruthÆs
son Robert Carruth married Elizabeth Anderson.
Robert lived in Rowan Co., N.C. on the plantation of his father until he
was 16. His father sold the Rowan Co.
plantation in 1762 and moved to Mecklenburg Co., N.C. buying land along Paw
Creek of close to 1000 acres. As an adult, Robert bought and sold land in
soon to be Rutherford, Lincoln, and Polk Counties, N.C. He married Elizabeth Anderson in 1770 and
they lived early married life in Rutherford Co., N.C. before moving to Ga. They are found on the 1790 Census in
Rutherford Co., N.C. They moved to Ga.
within a few years
where Robert is found paying taxes as early
as 1793 in Wilkes County, Ga.
I have thought that ElizabethÆs family
could be found documented at the following address: <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~anderson/others/johna.html>
There is an Elizabeth Anderson listed as
number 36. Her father is listed above
her as number 7. He was Robert Anderson
(John2, John1) and died in Abbeville Co., South Carolina. He married Ann Thompson in November 1765 in
Virginia. This Elizabeth would not be
RobertÆs wife if she were born after 1765.
Elizabeth is listed here as:
36
iii. Elizabeth Anderson. She
married (1) Robert Maxwell. She married
(2) Caruth.
Notes for Robert Maxwell:
!(1) "Gleanings of Virginia
History," by William Fletcher Boogher (19 65) p.314.
FHL #975.5 H2bw.
(1) "Of the Revolution."
After checking for other possibilities of
who this Elizabeth may have married I found that she did marry a Carruth and
this was her second marriage. This is
documented in Mrs. Lela Grant CarruthÆs book, ôFrom Whence Ye Cameö published
in 1982. On page 106 and 107 Adam
Carruth-3 (Alexander-1, Robert-2) is shown marrying Mrs. Mary Anderson Maxwell
Carruth before 25 Jan. 1810. There is
also a short history about MaryÆs family shown here. MaryÆs first husband Colonel Robert Maxwell was an officer under
General Robert Anderson (MaryÆs father).
Robert Maxwell was the first sheriff of Greenville Co., S.C. and was
killed from ambush 10 Nov. 1797. So
this information matches for the above except the information from the web page
was for Elizabeth. Perhaps the
Elizabeth Anderson that married Robert Carruth is on this page as well and I
have not found her there yet. The information for this Anderson family matches
pretty closely with the information for the Carruth family. It is noted for Robert Anderson that
Anderson Co., SC was named for him. I
found a couple of web sites with information to back this statement of the
naming of the county at:
<http://www.state.sc.us/scsl/ande.html>

Hello,
I've found a web site I
wanted to share with you that has Elizabeth Anderson married to
"Caruth" (second marriage). I
believe this Elizabeth is Robert's wife.
Robert Carruth (often found as Caruth in Virginia and N. Carolina) was a
son of immigrating ancestor Adam Carruth.
Robert and Elizabeth are my 5th great grandparents (Carruth). Also, I believe Elizabeth's father Robert or
her brother Robert, also found at this web site, is the Robert Anderson that
Adam Carruth mentioned in his will. The
web site is found at:

Dear Patrick,
I found your webpage
and gedcom. I am most interested in James Anderson who married Agnes Craig. I
have Sarah Anderson b 29 Aug 1792, she first married a man by the name of
Gibson (Gipson), but shortly after their marriage he was thrown from a horse a
killed. Sarah then married Stacy Collins. I noticed you have Isaac Anderson
listed as a brother to Sarah, (and son of James and Agnes). You show this Isaac
Anderson to have married Terese Powell. My Sarah Anderson had a brother who
also married Terese Powell. There is also another brother Asa Johnathon
Anderson who married a Welch girl. I have a problem here, as your file shows
that Sarah married someone completely different. I am wondering if I have the
correct parents for my Sarah. Can you check these out for me. Thank you.
Sincerely,

Thanks to everyone for
your kind responses to my query -- in spite of
the fact that I'm not
an Anderson. One of the responses sent
me looking
for a Jane Anderson in
Panola County, Texas, in the mid-1800s.
I
haven't found her yet,
but I did find the following that might be of
interest to someone:
In the book, History of
Panola County, Texas, page 167, there is
discussed a John Erwin
Anderson, b.c. 1796 in the Greenville District,
SC, to William Anderson
(b.c. 1765, Augusta County, VA) and Elizabeth
Easley. He was one of eight children and the first
of three sons.
John Erwin Anderson
married Cynthia Dunlap Harper on August 10, 1816, in
what is now Clarke
County, Alabama. Cynthia was one of
twin daughters
born to James Harper
and his wife Mary (Polly) Easley. Her
twin sister
was Elizabeth Finch
Harper who married Joel Mallory and came to Panola
County with John Erwin
and Cynthia. They lived in the area of
Panola
County that was created
out of Harrison County, TX. His brother
William
Gowen Anderson was
there also.
They had seven
children:
Permelia B. Anderson
(b. 1818 in Alabama) m. Lewis L. Parham.
She lived
in Panola County.
Elizabeth Anderson (b.
1821 in Alabama) m. William H. Lacy
James H. Anderson (b.
1823 in Alabama) nothing more is known about him
Mary Caroline Anderson
(b. 1826 in Alabama) m. Patrick C. Shahan, August
12, 1845, Harrison Co.
Pricilla C. Anderson
(b. 1830 in Alabama) m. Samuel W. McMahan, August
17, 1848
Willie Ann Anderson (b.
1834 in Alabama) m. William H. Davis on November
10, 1858, Panola Co.
Cynthia Jane Anderson
(b. 1836 in Alabama) m. Brooks D. Holland.
Lived
in Panola County.
His father, William
Anderson, was the son of John Anderson and Ann
Erwin. John Anderson's parents were James and Jean
Anderson (her maiden
name is represented by
a question mark) who came to America from
Scotland, arriving
first in Philadelphia and going thence to Augusta
County.
Ann Erwin was the
daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Erwin of Augusta
County. Elizabeth Easley Anderson was the daughte of
Lt. John Easley
and his wife, Ann
Gowen. Elizabeth Easley Anderson died
October 27,
1843, in Sumter County,
Alabama. William, her husband died
February 11,
1845 in the same
county.

I was told you might
come help me decipher the ancestors of Bailey Washington Anderson. I believe he was a descendant of John
Anderson, brother to Rev. James Anderson. know his parents were William
Anderson and Elizabeth Easley. William's parents were John Anderson and Ann
Erwin. I believe John's parents were John Anderson and Jane ?. Do you know if
this John Anderson, born 1710 in Scotland is a son or grandson of John Anderson
brother to Rev. James Anderson?
I would greatly
appreciate any information you have.
Thanks
Martha Neason

Palmyra, MO at age 15. This newspaper was the
first in the county.
(2) 1841: Bought the

Gazette," discontinued on May 4th
"owing to the bad health of the ed itor,"
had changed hands, and that "Mr. Joseph
P. Ament, Esq., late of th e Palmyra
Courier, is to be the future conductor."
In the "Hannibal Journal" o f June
1st, there's a reference to the appearance of
the first issue of the
"Missouri Courier" in Hannibal
under the editorship of Mr. Ament. (2 ) 1848:
Moved the "Missouri Courier" to
Hannibal, Marion Co., MO, and combin ed the
paper with the "Hannibal Gazette,"
which he published until 1852. (5 ,15) At
age 23, bought the "Gazette" of
Hannibal and moved the "Courier" int o its
place. His first shop was in Hannibal, the
old Gazette Shop where Sa m Clemens
started printing, was over Brittingham's Drug
Store and next to th e Planter's
House on the west side of North Main between
Bird and Hill, wher e a city
parking lot is today (1975).
(3) 1848-1850: Samuel
Langhorne CLEMENS (Mark Twain) was apprentice d to him as
a printer. Twain wrote in his autobiography
that Joseph's spinster s ister
Judith lived with Joseph. Twain thought
Joseph to be stingy, remembe ring him
and Sarah, his wife, with distaste. He had to
sleep on the printing- house
floor and got meager portions of food. He was
to get 2 suits of clot hes a
year, but got only one, the other being
Joseph's old clothes, whic h were too
big. He described Joseph as a short,
unimaginative man who ran his p aper
primarily as a political organ. Joseph liked
Samuel, though, and mad e him
subeditor of the "Courier." During
the same period, Joseph's nephew , Thomas
Pettus "Pet" McMURRY, was also
employed there as a journeyman printe r. (5)
Samuel CLEMENS complained that there was not
enough food and littl e variety in
it. At first he and the other apprentices had
to eat in the kitche n with the
old slave cook and her daughter. "Mr.
AMENT, the editor and propriet or of the
paper, allowed me the usual emolument of the
office of apprentic e - that is
to say, board and clothes, but no money. The
clothes consisted of tw o suits
a year but one of the suits always failed to
materialize and the oth er suit
was not purchased so long as Mr. AMENT's old
clothes held out. I wa s only
about half as big as AMENT, consequently his
shirts gave me the unco mfortable
sense of living in a circus tent, and I had
to turn up his pants t o my ears
to make them short enough." In the
earliest picture of Sam CLEMENS, a
daguerrotype, taken when he was about 15, he
looks as though he is w earing a
too large, fancy shirt. In the picture he is
holding the letters S, A and M in
a composing stick.
(14) 1849, 19 Apr: Was
editor of the "Missouri Courier."
(22) 1849, 15 Oct: Was

(10) 1850: Living in
Hannibal, MO, occupation editor.
(15) His last shop was
in the building which still stands (1975) on t he SE
corner of Hill and Main.
(5) He was a
Jacksonian Democrat and was a leading, belligerant and
proselyting Democrat in a county strongly
Whig.
(5) 1851: Was
secretary of the County Reunion which brought the Bento n and
anti-Benton Democrats together for action
against the Whigs.
(5) 1852, 2 Mar: When
a fire started in a shop nearby to Orion CLEMEN S'
newspaper shop, AMENT, on his own, moved out
their essential equipme nt
before Orion and Samuel got there.
(1a) 1852, 24 Jul:
R.N. Anderson, editor of the "Tri-Weekly Messanger ," wrote:

charge. Each of the past few days had opened
with an engagement an d closed
with the enemy making another stand prior to
a further retreat. "Ou r officers
won the confidence of every man in that first
fire. Old Colonel Mill er and
Adjutant Davidson rode back and forth along
the line, joking about t he way the
bullets were shredding the sod. ... The day
closed with an engagemen t that
lasted about thirty minutes, after which we
advanced to the deserte d trenches
to spend the night too tired and worn from
heat and hunger to care f or
anything. No food was on hand for that night.
... Around our restin g place
were the bodies of dead insurgents, and a few
still alive. One of th ese begged
for chow-chow (food). In pity we turned away,
unable to tell the poo r fellow
we had none for ourselves. All that night the
tireless Adjutant Davi dson
hustled to get information on the wagon
train. About five o'clock Tu esday
morning the train showed up and we gladly
broke our long fast and we re away on
another day's terrible march. ... It may be
added that at this tim e Adjutant
Davidson was in the saddle for forty-eight
successive hours."
