Bef. 1696, daughter of Samuel Waddy. She was born Abt. 1675 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died Abt. 1768 in Hanover County, Virginia.

Notes for John Anderson:

There is a write up of John Anderson's family in The Early Descendants of William Overton and Elizabeth Waters of Virginia, and Allied Families, by William Pope Anderson, 1938. Unfortunately I do not have my own copy of this yet so I have not been able to abstract the information to date.

John's connection to Robert is through the precessioning records of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, where he is superceded by his widow Sarah.

Pat,

Just had the privelege of looking at you excellent website: Everett Anderson Memorial Collection, and want to thank you and share information on my ancestor, John Anderson, c.1670-1730, who died in Louisa Co, and who you list as child #7 of Robert Anderson and Cecelia Massie.

My own lineage, in brief, goes:

   1 John Anderson=Sarah Waddy

       2 Maj. Nelson Anderson (c.1714-1786-Hanover Co)=unknown wife

           3 Elizabeth Anderson=Waddy Thomson, Sr

4 Anderson Thomson=(1st cousin) Ann Clopton Anderson

[SEE BELOW]

5 David Henry Thomson=Catherine Mary Goll

6 Nelson Anderson Thomson=Mary Lucinda Davies

[SEE BELOW]

2 Ann Anderson (1708-1802)=David Crawford III

           3 David Crawford IV=Elizabeth Henderson

               4 Elizabeth Crawford=Nicholas Clayton Davies

                   5 Mayo Davies=Lucinda Taliaferro

6 Benjamin Taliaferro Davies=Mary Frances Shirkey

7 Mary Lucinda Davies=Nelson Anderson Thomson [REDUNDANT]

8 Catherine Mary Thomson=James Luke Boyle

9 James Thomson Boyle=Barbara Jean Simpson

                                        10 James David Boyle

       2 William Anderson=unknown wife

3 Col. Nelson Anderson (1735-1819, Louisa Co)=Frances Jackson

4 Ann Clopton Anderson=Anderson Thomson [REDUNDANT]

                    5 etc

Thus, as far as our family can tell, we descend from 3 of the 8 children of John Anderson. I have a fairly good-sized descendancy of these people, and have collected about 800 or so descendants of Nicholas Clayton Davies.

My main concern is the parentage of John Anderson (your John4, Robert3, Richard 2, Richard1).

I would prefer to believe that he does in fact descend, as above, from Robert, as the genealogists in my family have believed for the past century; however, I have run into a lot of trouble trying to confirm it.

Robert Anderson I had a child named John, with little said about his descendants, but I couldn't tie him into my family. Maybe you will be

able to.

In W.P. Anderson's 3 books, the major note on John is in "Early desc. of Wm. Overton, etc", p.35, and he says that Robert I's son John was born too late to have been the husband of Sarah Waddy, but I can't find any marriage date for Robert I or that of his son John.

My John and his wife apear to be the ones who were deeded land on 28 Jan 1696 from Samuel Waddy, and John's widow conveyed these 80 acres to John Thom(p)son (7 Aug 1735--Virginia County Records, by Crozier, VII:67). In 1725 he received another grant of land in Hanover Co. My working hypothesis is that he came from Scotland, and came here either before or after his 1700 marriage. One source claimed that the Thomas Anderson of co.Northumberland who established a shipyard at Gloucester Point in the 17th century, was the ancestor of the family in Virginia, and they are apparently unrelated to the Robert Andersons of Goldmine.

If you have any further ideas on John, I would be grateful for them. If you would like me to send a printout or GEDCOM on anything I have, it would be a pleasure.

Thanks again for your great website.

Notes for FRANCES DICKERSON: Frances birth and death dates have been give to me by descendants of Bartlett and Frances Anderson. Both gave me the same dates. BB gave me the actual birthdates that were give to his gg grandfather (Benjamin McLain Anderson) who received them from a letter written Feb. 23, 1892 written by Bartlett Anderson (uncle to BB's gggrandfather).

Note: This creates a more questions. Guardian accounts in Louisa Co. Va. dated 1801 have Turner Anderson guardian to Thomas D. Anderson.

Guardian accounts in Louisa Co. va. dated 1802 have Reubin Chewning guardian of Louisa. (he later marrys her after his wife Ann dies). Elizabeth Dabney and Nathaniel Anderson are not on BB list of children. So there is a possiblity there was another child of Griffith Dickinson who died and was also married to an Anderson. Possibly there are two children deceased before their father as Elizabeth Dabney could be a maiden name. I haven't located an Elizabeth Anderson who married a man named Dabney.

I will add more information as I find it. If anyone has something to contribute please contact me. I will add it to my webpage.

Happy Hunting,

Connie Dickerson Burkhead

Hi Harry,

Harry, I ran across a reference that I had forgotten about. If fact it was this reference that convinced me W.P.Anderson made a boo boo. Saying Elizabeth Dabney who was married to Owen Dabney was Elizabeth (Anderson) Dabney mentioned in Griffith Dickinson's will dated Dec. 1785 grand-daughter. Look at it and see what you think.

The Valentine Papers

Dabney: Louisa County

pages 417-418

Owen Dabney & Elizabeth his wife of Hanover Co. to John Overton, Jr. of same Co 401: curr, 400 acres in Louisa Co. adj. Lands of Capt. Thos. Daracott, Colo, Dudley Digges, Reuben Sumers and by the South Anna River, Nov, 10, 1753. D.B. "G"p.323.

Now, notice the year of this document 1753. Griffith Dickinson named his grand daughter Elizabeth Dabney in his will dated Dec. 1785. That is 32 yrs from this land document to the will. How old was Elizabeth Dabney? Lets just suppose this land document was written shortly after Owen and ElizabethÆs wedding. Lets suppose she married young say 17 yrs old. That is a total of 49 yrs.old. That would make her born 1736. Remember it is established in Griffith DickinsonÆs will that Elizabeth Dabney is 1737. A grand daughter not a child. All my supposing is on the conservitive side. Could be even older if I was Liberal.

Ok now lets look at the children of Griffith Dickinson and Ann Cosby.

1. Ann Dickenson b. 1735 (from bible records given to me by Polly Menendez who also has the Tompkins records and her husband is descended from Bartlett Anderson Jr.)

2. Son Dickenson b. abt. 1736 (he is the only one who could have married Rachel ?)

3. Robert Dickenson b. abt. 1737 (my ancestor).

4. James (Cosby) Dickinson b. 1742 (from bible records you can see these at VA Library online. Also I havenÆt found any record where he uses Cosby as his middle name that came from family tradition)

5. Charles Dickenson b. abt. 1746 (mentioned in John CosbyÆs will as a grandson)

6. Higgason Cosby Dickenson b. abt. 1747 (mentioned in John CosbyÆs will as grandson)

7. Frances Dickerson b. 1754 d. from Polly Menendez records. She married Bartlett Anderson Jr. April 10, 1770. Witnesses Robert Dickenson, Higgason C. Dickinson I have copy of this record somewhere. I canÆt remember if James is on the record too. But one thing I did notice is Griffith Dickinson didnÆt sign for her so she was of age. Which would mean she was 18 or older. My guess her brother stood up with her as witnesses.

IÆm still wanting proof that Mary Anderson who was the wife of Benjamin Anderson was a Dickinson and not an Anderson. Which to me is as obvious and seeing Mary Cosby wife of Bartolett Anderson them naming a child Mary Anderson after her mother.

It was common pratice by everyone in this timeframe to marry cousins. However if you can find me the proof that Griffith Dickinson and Ann Cosby had a daughter Mary and those are her children mentioned in GriffithÆs will I will change my thinking real fast. And change my webpage the same day to include her as IÆm after facts not what someone else thinks it should be.

Best Regards,

Connie

Dear Pat: My Anderson line begins with Elizabeth Anderson, daughter of Bartlett Anderson and Frances Dickerson/Dickenson. Elizabeth was born ca 1776 in Botetourt Co., VA, and died after 1846 in Jackson Co., TN. She married Benjamin Fox 20 August 1799 in Botetourt Co., VA. Her parents were married 10 April 1770 in Lousia Co., VA. These facts are documented. I believe her father is the Bartlett Anderson who died 18 Oct 1787, but I really don't know which Bartlett Anderson he was. Her mother was the daughter of Griffith Dickerson, but which one? Do you have anything that would signify which Bartlett Anderson and which Griffith Dickerson go with this line? Thanks very much. Lora Tindall

Hello Connie, and everyone,

I'm not sure I'm ready to jump into the Anderson and Dickerson discussion,

mainly because I haven't done much research, and haven't spent time recently

looking at these records. I do need to correct Connie's statement, though,

about my connection. It is not my husband who is related. I have two

connections to Griffith Dickerson and Anne Cosby.

1. My mother descends from Ann Dickerson and Robert Reade Tompkins. She and my grandmother entered the DAR under the Tompkins line, and he was a Captain of the Navy. I do have a copy of his will sent to me by a Tompkins researcher. And I have all the work that my mother did in genealogy research before she died.

2. My father descends from Frances Dickerson and Bartlett Anderson, Jr. I

have a copy of their daughters will, which I transcribed from the handwritten

document, sent to me from the Pike Co, MO records, where she died. It was also recorded into the Mercer Co., KY records. Her name was Martha Anderson, who married Henry Trower. They migrated from Louisa Co, VA to Mercer Co., KY in 1812. At the moment, I do not know what material I might have that proves she was their daughter.

Are any of you descended from either Ann or Frances Dickerson?

Thank you,

Polly Askew Menendez

m. Sarah Murray (or Murry) Oct. 22, 1798 - Kentucky

During the War of 1812 Elkanah Anderson enlisted in the Tennesee Milita, and along with his brother-in-law Thomas Whitwell marched to New Orleans where he died a few days after being wounded in battle. The information that I received states that Elkanah was "probably" buried along with the other soldiers killed during the Battle of New Orleans in the National Cemetery at Chalmette. Does anyone have any information that would verify this cemetery as his burial site?

Thanks, Judy

I did find an index for the marriage bond referencing name Charles (same one

you mention) at:

https://sites.rootsweb.com/~vabedfor/bedf-m_s.htm

it reads:

Dec. 20, 1830; Lorenzo R. Steuart, (or Stewart) & Sarah Ann Anderson, dt

Elizabeth W.; Charles J. Anderson, Surety; Married by Nicholas H. Cobbs,

Dec. 22, 1830.

Order of children:

We learn from N. J. Floyd that Elizabeth was the third daughter and that

Sarah was her younger sister. We learn from Virginia Historical Society that

Mary lived 1808-1898. We know that Mary was living in 1889 from her

handwritten letter provided to me by Marvin Minton.

So, the order of children I have (with approximate dates) is:

James T. Anderson - abt 1795

Ann J. T. Anderson - abt 1798

Almira L. Anderson - abt 1800

Elizabeth West Anderson - 31 May 1802

Sarah Anderson - aft 1803

Paulina H. Anderson - abt 1807

Mary Lightfoot Anderson - 1808

Note that daughter Mary, in a letter, writes that her "mother raised nine

children - three sons who left no sons." So perhaps there were two more boys

who died in childhood. Patrick Milburn's cousin Clark Inge in Bedford, Co.

Va finds a Jesse Anderson d. 1806 buried next to Jesse & Elizabeth Anderson

in Jesse Anderson Cemetery, Goode ,VA, same cemetery where he reports that

Nelson and Frances Anderson are buried. Presumably this Jesse is a son of

Jesse & Elizabeth.

Hello,

This is what I have :

Most of what I have is from Bedford Museum, and researched by a cousin and cemetery research is from a survey by a Mark Blankenship

Children of Jesse Anderson and Elizabeth Jones are:

+ 67 i. James T.10 Anderson, born 1795; died Abt. 1846 in Bedford County, Virginia.

68 ii. Ann J. T. Anderson, born Abt. 1798. She married Thomas Woolridge.

69 iii. Almira L. Anderson, born Abt. 1800. She married Beverly Scott.

70 iv. Elizabeth West Anderson, born May 31, 1802.

Your listing is definitely and intersection with my family. However, it is disconcerting that your research does not list Elizabeth West Anderson (b. 31-May-1802) as a child of Jesse & Elizabeth West (Jones) Anderson.

My source for Jesse & Elizabeth is "Biographical Genealogies of the Virginia-Kentucky Floyd Families" by N.J. Floyd 1812, which can be found online at http://www.familytreemaker.com/glc/1611. Page 32 of my edition.

Since the author of this source is the grandson of Elizabeth West (Jones) Anderson and knew her well into his adulthood, it is reasonable to think he is correct in documenting his own mother as a daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth. However, it would be nice to find another source to confirm it.

Patrick,

Glad to have found your web site. I am currently researching the Anderson intersection in my family as you can witness from the dialogue attached.

For your reference, I have a complete (99.9% complete) listing of the descendants of Dr. Nathaniel Wilson Floyd (b. 5-June-1793, d. 4-Dec-1866) and Elizabeth West Anderson (b. 31-May-1802, d. 23-Sept-1883), daughter of Jesse Anderson and Elizabeth West Jones who are mentioned on your site. My listing also includes all current residences of all known living descendants.

Much of my early information comes from a book written by the son of Elizabeth West Anderson, namely Nicholas Jackson Floyd. So far, this source is the only one I have found that ties Elizabeth to Jesse. The book also mentions Elizabeth's sister Sarah Anderson who married Lorenzo R. Stewart. It frequently mentions the Anderson home at "Locust Grove." It is also noteworthy that Elizabeth names one of her daughters Almira, who appears to be another daughter of Jesses Anderson, and that Almira Anderson names one of her daughters Elizabeth. And there are other repetitive names between the families such as Pauline.

Thought you might be interested in adding to your list of Anderson web sites.

Pat,

Forgive me for not sending the information I have on William O. Anderson. I have had family here and thought we would have time to send the file but there was so much going on and not enough time. My genealogy is on Ultimate Family Tree and I tried sending a small file in RTF to a niece to see if it worked and was not successful. Will either try that again or maybe I can send it through a Gedcom file. In any case I have not forgotten and will try again when I have more time. There is so much I need to learn and am amazed with all you sent and so well documented. I have been gathering data for years but did not realize the importance of documenting sources in the early years.

I wrote to Eleanor Poindexter regarding George N. Yates m. Mary Elizabeth Anderson. They were my great grandparents and for 20 years I have tried to find something on him, all to no avail. I asked her source as thought it might give me a clue but have not had a response. Is she a professional genealogist?

Pat - thanks ... two confirmed death dates to update your files ...

This data was found in the Nashville City Cemetery archives:

(1) Thomas Jefferson Anderson was born 1785 in VA

as previoulsy believed and died in Nashville on

31 May 1854 ... He is buried in the Nashville City Cemetery.

(2) Ann Meriwether Thomson Anderson, wife of the above T.J.

Anderson died in Nashville on 28 Jan 1848 and was buried

in the Nashville City Cemetery also ...

I actually stumbled onto that data ... ya get lucky sometimes.

As for the John S. Anderson, he was the older brother of my Thomas

Allen Howard Anderson and to date have found NO-BODY who will

claim him as their ancestor ....

Thanks for the update ...

Hi Patrick,

I have visited your website and I must say you have spent alot of time on your research and I thank you very much for sharing.

I would like to know if you know anything further about the following Andersons or can put me in touch with someone that can give me further info. Nathan Crawford Anderson and his wife died when his sons were young and I can find no clue after their death. I strongly believe Nathan Crawford is my ancestor but I would really like proof.
