Descendants of John Anderson
Generation No. 1
1. John3 Anderson
("Southwest"2, "Colonial Virginia"1)
was born Abt. 1720. He married Mary
?.
Notes for John
Anderson:
There appears to be 4
separate accounts (speculations) making the rounds on the Internet. Each story
indicates that this 'Anderson' line traveled the 'Old Wagon Trail' before the
1770s.
Origin Version 1 (Pat
Anderson):
Jacob is not a common
name among the other Scottish and English Andersons of Virginia but it was in
common use among the NJ Anderson family that originated in New Amsterdam on
Long Island (before 1700) as a 'Dutch' Andriesen family.
Origin Version 2 (From
a 1930s genealogy book commisioned by a Cleveland, OH Anderson family- title
unknown):
John & Jacob were
descendants of a Scot named John Anderson who arrived in Jamestown as an
indentured servant.
Origin Version 3 (The
generally accepted story):
The two brothers, of
Swedish descent, started their westward journey from 'the Delaware River
Valley' region of New Jersey. Note: The first reference (in print) to Jacob
being from NJ is found in an article by Paula Anderson-Green [The New River
Frontier Settlement On The Virginia-North Carolina Border 1760-1820, Virginia
Magazine of History and Biography, V86: pgs. 413-431 (1978)]. She states that
Jacob indicated in the 1820 census that he was from NJ, however, after
reviewing Jacob's entry on the 1820 census microfilm, I can state that no such
indication exists.
Origin Version 4:
[Appeared on Yahoo Group: NCNR]
Many claim that these
Andersons were originally from New Jersey. I have also heard claimed that they
were the sons of the same John and May Anderson that were the alleged parents
of the Rebecca Anderson that married John "Old John" Hash. Some have
gone even further to speculate that the Darby Hash of the Eastern Shore of
Maryland was the father of "Old John" Hash and next door neighbor to
John and May Anderson. This John is supposed to be the son of a William
Anderson of Maryland. William passed away on the journey.
So the story is spun
that:
John "Old
John" Hash was born and christened in St. Mary's Co., MD and the Hashes
and Andersons remove to New Jersey. Some where along this time line Rebecca
(Anderson) and her siblings are born as well as "Old John's."
"Old John"
Hash and Rebecca marry in NJ.
John, his wife
Rebecca, his brothers James and William, and his brothers-in-law John and Jacob
all removed to Montgomery Co. (Later Grayson Co.) VA.
A twist to this fourth
version (from Carol Conrad - her original text contained errors) says that the
father of John and Jacob bought land in Wilkes County, NC and passed away a
year after he had been living there.
NOTE:
This fourth version
tale somewhat matches 'John Anderson (AFN:RRC8-G1)' listed at
'www.familysearch.org'. This 'other' group of Anderson's lived to the west of
Grayson County, VA, after the county boundaries were redrawn. Their story
involves a William Anderson, a father and son both named John, a 'wife' named
Rebecca and the father moving on after a period of time. John, the son, built
what is called the 'Block house' in Washington County. Even Old John Hash is
part of this 'block house' story.
End Note ----
Children of John
Anderson and Mary ? are:
+ 2 i. John4 Anderson, born Bet. 1746 -
1751 in Delaware; died Bet. 1829 - 1830 in Grayson County, Virginia.
+ 3 ii. Jacob Anderson, born Abt. 1756 in Deleware;
died 1825 in Flatridge, Grayson County, Virginia.
Generation No. 2
2. John4 Anderson (John3,
"Southwest"2, "Colonial Virginia"1)
was born Bet. 1746 - 1751 in Delaware, and died Bet. 1829 - 1830 in Grayson
County, Virginia. He married Mary ?. She was born Abt. 1750 in New Jersey.

- Pat,
Wow, you sent 4
e-mails! I did not mean to un-settle
you, please forgive me for that. Below is the current data I have on my
ancestor 'John Anderson' of Grayson County.
BTW, in one of your
e-mails, you mention John's mother as May Horton. I've only recently suspected
a variation of this (Mary 'Helton') in regard to Mary's maiden name (the wife
of John -- Jacob's brother). See my comments before the land records I've
listed below. This might be more evidence of confusion between the father and
son. If you have another source for this info please consider this as a request
for it. Hopefully, in this e-mail, I've addressed your comments from your other
notes to me. If not let me know.
- Take care,

John Anderson's Will,
abstracted from the 'Official' Grayson County VA Will Book (1793) Transcribed
April 2001, by Paul Bryan Anderson, a descendant. This is a variation of the
standard will format in use at the time. John requests that his funeral expenses
be paid and his wife, Mary, be cared for. George, William, Jonathan, Isaac,
Joseph and Nancy each receive 1 cent from the estate. Milley inherits a
yearling cow. Elizabeth and her husband Stephen B. Ross (m. 12 Mar 1818), a
Baptist Minister, inherits the remainder of John Anderson's estate. The will
was witnessed 7 Jan 1826; Probated Aug 1830, continued to Nov 1830, and an
estate inventory was recorded 01 Jul 1831.
The 1830 Census does
not list John Anderson's household, however, in the household of Stephen Ross
an older female is listed (it's probably Mary, John's wife). She is not listed
in the 1840 Census.

GRAYSON COUNTY, VA
LAND RECORDS OF JOHN ANDERSON
================================================
There is some evidence
that the brothers, John and Jacob Anderson, had some form of attachment to
Wilkes County, NC.
Questions I have:
Does anyone have info
on the John Helton, listed below?
John Helton apparently
went out of his way to accommodate John Anderson.
Could this indicate
that they were inlaws -- or was there some other reason?
Any info or comments
would be appreciated.

Paraphrased 'John
Anderson' Extracts from: "Grayson County, Virginia, Deed Book No. 1"

=====
On Apr 15, 1795 'John
Helton' [of Wilkes County, North Carolina], for divers considerations and good
causes gave his friend, Thomas Testament of Grayson County, power of Attorney
so that he could give 'John Anderson' (as well as Daniel Jones) a lawful right
to the land where they now live in Grayson.
NOTE: Additional
'Internet' documents from LVA (no longer available -- due to budget problems!)
indicate that John Anderson was living in Grayson County, VA on land next to
his brother Jacob at this time.
On Apr 14, 1798 John
Anderson sold this land (107 acres in Grayson County, VA on the waters of Fox
Cr) to Joseph Cox for 60 pounds.
On Apr 23, 1798 'John
Anderson' of Grayson County bought, for 50 pounds, from 'John & Mary
Helton' [of Lee County, VA] 130 acres on the Laurel fork of Fox Creek. This is
the property willed to Elizabeth and her husband upon John's death. This
property remains in one piece and with the Ross family until after the Civil
War.
Note: This was part of
a survey of 370 acres granted to the said Helton by patent dated May 17, 1793.
On a Sep 14, 1798
'John & Mary Helton' [of Grayson County, VA] sold a tract of land, next to
John Anderson's property, to Daniel Jones

>From the Internet
(with repairs):
One descendant of this
Anderson line says, in her family lore, that John Anderson (Husband to May and
Father of John and Jacob) bought land in Wilkes County, NC in 1787 but then
passes away in 1789.
Note that there IS a
John Anderson listed in the Wilkes County, NC 1787 tax records at New River
Notes.

>From conversations
with an NCNR Group member:
There are indications
of a John and Jacob Anderson living in Wilkes County, NC dated prior to records
listing those same names in Grayson County, VA.
[PBA]
For that matter, there
is a Cornelius Anderson and a Thomas Anderson listed as being in Wilkes Co. NC
during that time frame as well. More research is Needed.

My ancestor Jacob Anderson was most
likely born in the Delaware River Valley of New Jersey. He had a brother John who came to Grayson
County, VA with him by 1777. Jacob is
listed on the Capt. Enoch Osborne list of militia for Montgomery Co, VA in
1777. As you know Grayson was part of
Montgomery Co. in 1777. John settled
near Troutdale, VA and Jacob had lands on Middle Fox Creek in the Flatridge
area of Grayson.
Jacob had two daughters, Rebecca who
married John Hash and Nancy Anderson who married William Hash, Jr. He also had a son John b. Oct 1794 in Grayson and died in 1875. I am descended from both John son of Jacob
and Rebecca Anderson Hash. John
Anderson son of Jacob married Feraby Cornett, daughter of David Cornett
1750-1847 another Revolutionary Patriot.
John Anderson brother of Jacob was married to a Mary.
There was also a Peter Anderson in the
area but we're not sure if he was a brother or cousin of John and Jacob. I think there was also a James Anderson, but
we're not sure of his relationship either.
If you need more information let me
know.

Dear Patrick:
Currently, I am
putting together a book on the descendants of Jacob Anderson. Most likely, you
have seen the book forms produced by the 6.0 version of Family Tree Maker. This
is what I am using for my book. I hope to have it ready by next summer. Our annual
Anderson/Cornett Family Reunion is held every second Saturday of August in
Grayson County, VA.
Thank you again for
including my information about Jacob on your website.
Sincerely,

Hi CK
Saw your reply to
Sheila and wanted to let you know I have a land transfer dated May 10, 1817 and
witnessed by Ezekiel Sullivan. It's
signed in his handwriting. Will be happy to send you a copy. Evidently my Wallen family lived near your
Sullivans in Hawkins/Hancock County, TN and Grayson/Montgomery County, VA.
I also descend from
John Hash and Rebecca Anderson through their daughter Jane who married Enoch
Osborne. I don't have much other than
my direct line but would like to exchange info with you, if you're interested.

believe her parents were Jacob Anderson and Susannah Buchanan. I descend
through their daughter, Maryann Hash, 1807-1880. Thanks for any help.
