to an order of the court dated July 28, 1707, appointing Mr. David Anderson
& Samuel Waddy to clear the Pamonkey River on the south side thereof from
Piping Tree to Hardings Landing, formerly Youels, they applying themselves to
this vestry for assistance with instruments or materials to comply with the
order of the court. This vestry has thought that this parish is not able to
comply with that order.
Piping Tree is along
the Pamunkey tree in the northeast corner of the bend that occurs just above
the border between current New Kent County and Hanover County. It is downstream from Totoppotomeys Creek. This bend sticks into KIng WIlliam County
and suggests the reason so many records of this family reference a residence of
King WIlliam County.

Dear Pat:
As an Anderson
descendant of David (#4), David (#24), Robert (#87) and Susannah (#324), I am
interested in your website and have found it very helpful. I do have some
additions and corrections to make.
First, Robert Anderson
(#87) would not have been age 14 in 1835 when a guardian was appointed for him.
IF he had been, he could have appointed his own, the court would not have had
to do so. [See Val D. Greenwood, The Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy
(Baltimore: Gen'l Pub. Co., 1990) 2nd. edition page 266.
The first known act of
Robert and Frances together as husband and wife is known to be in 1746, when
Robert must have been age 21 at least. The two probably had been married a
year. Even so, 1746 minus 1735 makes Robert, if 21 in 1746, ten or eleven years
old in 1735 and therefore born about 1724 or 1725. That 1735 date comes, of
course, from the appointment of a guardian by the Hanover County Court (Record
330) and the 1746 one from the time the land patented by his father David (#24)
was sold by the two of them to Richard Ambler. [VA Magazine of History and
Biography (1905) Volume 12 page 205.
You do not give a
reference for the marriage of Frances and Robert, but the place and time have
got to be off. The Poindexters lived in that part of New Kent which became
Hanover and later Louisa County. And Robert would have been too young to marry
in 1739 if less than age 14 in 1735. Unless, of course, he married at age 17. I
think W. P. Anderson is probably correct in his idea that the two were newly
married when that Ambler deed was signed.
There has been some
controversy over which Anderson Frances Poindexter married and the standard
Poindexter genealogy [John Poindexter Landers, last chapter by Robert Downs
Poindexter, Poingdestre-Poindexter A Norman Family Through the Ages 1250-1977,
Austin, TX: Robert Downs Poindexter, 1977] is silent on which Anderson she
married. However, Frances IS called Frances Anderson in both her mother and
father's wills.
John Poindexter died
before 22 May 1753, when his will was recorded [Louisa CO Will Book 1 page 27].
He named Robert Anderson one of his three executors and that Robert so served
can be seen in a deed whereby he and Christian (John's widow and executor)
deeded to Thomas Poindexter (the third executor) ten slaves left Thomas by his
father. [Louisa CO Deed Book C-D1/2 oage 466; recorded 22 May 1753]
Christian Poindexter
wrote her will 25 June 1778 and in it says, "My dau. Frances Anderson
being dead I give her part to her children ... ." [Louisa CO Will Book 2
page 358, recorded 14 June 1779] This gives us an approximate date for Frances'
death.
When Robert (#87) died
intestate, and with Frances deceased, eldest son David (# 316) received
Robert's entire estate through primogeniture. [Primogeniture was not abolished
in this country until 1786.]
On 28 June 1782, David
divided the 1000 acres Robert left him on Peters Creek among his six siblings
[Robert, John, Ann, Suzannah (sic), Kitty (sic) and Sally), reserving 1/7th.
for himself. This implises that Elizabeth and Frances were either deceased or
had been provided for at the time of their marriages.
This land went unsold
for many years. In the meantime the siblings made out two powers of attorney in
Kentucky, both of which were recorded in Louisa County. [The first was executed
on 23 Sept 1803 (Jessamine CO Deed Book A pp. 447-447) and recorded in Louisa
CO, VA on 10 Apr 1810! (Louisa Deed Book L pp. 431-432). Parties to this did
not include either Catherine (Anderson) Holladay or Robert Anderson. The second power of attorney was to a Joel Miller,
....... It was executed on 23 Sep 1818 in Jessamine CO, KY, and recorded on 27
Oct 1818 in Louisa CO, VA (Louisa Deed Book O pp. 77-79). As I found this first
in Louisa CO I did not check Jessamine for the deed book in which it was
recorded. John P. Anderson had died since the first p-o-a was signed and this
time "Zachariah Holladay and Catherine Holladay his wife late Catherine
Anderson of the County of Adair" were a party to the p-o-a, plus the other
living siblings, including Robert Anderson.
Though appointed
administrator of his father's estate, David died before the estate was settled.
This duty fell to William Poindexter, whose security was his brother John.
[Louisa CO Will Book 3 page 113] Appointed administrator for David's estate was
his brother John Anderson (#320). [Louisa CO Will Book 3 page 113] However, he
was not the eldest son, but was the eldest living in Louisa. Robert and his
sisters were living in Bedford County at this time. Ann and Catherine Anderson
were witnesses to the will of the father of John Miller (who married Susannah
Anderson (#324). It was signed 2 June 1784 and proved 28 February 1785.
[Bedford CO Will Book 2 pages 490-491] Probably because David left so much land
which needed to be located and sold, John left Louisa County for Bedford
himself. The administration of David's estate then fell to William Poindexter.
[Louisa CO Will Book 3 page 173] Prior to this Robert was declared by Bedford
Court as "heir at law" to David and this term appears in the first power
of attorney the siblings made. [Bedford CO Order Book 7 page 277, recorded 28
July 1784.
There is no record
that David served in the Revolutionary War in any capacity. However, he bought
up soldier's land warrants and at the time of his death owned thousands of acres
of warrant land in Kentucky and also Tennessee. Robert and John spend years
locating and selling this land. Some idea of how much land he owned can be seen
in the part of it Robert sold to his father-in-law, William Reed - "1450
acres, 1922 acres, 147 acres in District of Kentucky." [Bedford CO
Conveyance Book 8 page 334, recorded 1790] And again in a power of attorney
granted his brother John "to convey land on Russel's (sic) Creek [KY],
land on Tennessee River and 12,000 acres of "Wilderness Tract." [Bedford
CO Conveyance Book 8 pages 503-504] There is much more like this in the Bedford
Conveyance Books, amounting to thousands of acres.
I have an abstracted
will for John P. Anderson (#320) and another for the husband of Ann Anderson
(#325), Archeleus Moon, both naming children. I have Zachariah Holliday's
pension application; he married Katherine (Kitty) Anderson #321 and the two
left many descendants.About Sally (#322) and her husband Joseph Higbee I know
very little.
If and when I ever get
it all together - again! - I'll see you get a copy.
All best wishes,
Bonnie (Miller)
Gunsaulus

Hi Patrick!
I noticed a posting
one of your postings on the Anderson genforum.
I was looking for one connection but may have found another. I have both an Anderson and a Poindexter
line. What caught my attention was your
posting regarding CSA Gen Samuel Anderson.
I'm interested in the Poindexter connection in his lineage. I have a John Poindexter who married a
Christian Gissage-Gorsuch c. 1727 in Hanover County, Virginia.
Could this be the same
John and Christian as mentioned in Samuel's lineage? John was born in 1701 in
Hanover County and died in 1753 in Fredericksville Parish, Louisa County,
Virginia. Christian was borm in 1700 in
King William County, Virginia and died in Jan. 1779 in Fredericksville Parish,
Louisa County, Virginia. I have two
known children - Thomas and Sarah.
Please let me know
what you think. I have a great deal of
info on the Poindexter line I can share with you. I also have some info on the Anderson line which may tie in as
well.
Warm Regards,
Denise

Pat, I know you enjoy a
good wrangle (sometimes so do I). However, I haven't time for it presently.
Robert Anderson (m.
Frances Poindexter) d. intestate. David Anderson, "Junr.", became
administrator. His securities were Turner Anderson and William Poindexter, his
uncle or first cousin. The date was 9 Apr. 1782. (Louisa Will Book 2 p. 447) On
28 Jun 1782 David Anderson "for the natural affection which he Bears to
his said Brothers & Sisters Above mentioned as parties of the second part
(Robert, John, Ann, Suzannah, Kitty & Sally) & for the consideration of
the sum of one shilling & three pence by them to him in hand paid the
receipt Whereof he Doth hereby Acknowledge
& Confess Hath Given Granted Bargained & sold & hereby Doth
Give Grant Bargain Sell make over & Confirm unto them & each of them

Equal parts to his six brothers and sisters to wit Robert John Ann Suzanah

demand From the said David his Heirs or Assigns or any Person or Persons
Claiming by from or under them or any of them of the said Robert Ann Suzanah
Kitty & Sally Anderson their heirs & assigns forever." It was
sealed and delivered in the presence of James Johnson, Zach Stanley and Peter
Crawford "At Court Held at the Courthouse of Louisa County July 8th.
1782." Louisa Deed Book H pp.207-208)
I believe Elizabeth and
Frances were not party to this because they had been taken care of (doweries)
at the time of their marriages. The other sisters were unmarried at this time.
W.P. Anderson in
Anderson-Overton says (p. 47) that
David died without heirs.
On 14 Sep 1785 John
Anderson posted the administrator's bond for the estate of David Anderson. His
securities were his brother-in-law Archeleus Moone, cousin Waddy Thomson, and
Moses White (who may have been the father or brother of John White who married
Frances Anderson). (Louisa Will Book 3
p.113)
On the same page under
date of 10 Oct 1785 William Pondxter posted the bond as administrator of Robert
Anderson. His security was his brother or nephew John Poindexter.
Pat, this is beginning
to sound familiar. I know I wrote you that Robert Anderson, David's brother,
was declared "heir at law" to David in Bedford County and
subsequently gave a power-of-attorney to John to locate and sell some of the
land David had acquired in Kentucky and along the Tennessee River. Subsequently
the brothers and sisters living in KY made out two powers of attorney to sell
that land.
The first power of
attorney made by the siblings was in Jessamine CO, KY, in favor of John P.
Anderson. It reads in part: "land
in the County of Louisa and in the said State of Virginia which decended (sic)
from Robert Anderson deceased to David Anderson as his heir at law and conveyed
by the [sd.] David to us as Children and heirs of the said Robert. VIZ: Ann
Moon formerly Ann Anderson, John Miller and Susanna his wife formerly Susanna
Anderson daughter of said Robert Anderson and Joseph Higbee and Salley (sic)
his wife formerly Salley Anderson also daughter of Robert Anderson and also for
us and in our name ... ." It goes on to state that there is a mortgage on
the property "given to secure the payment of a British debt" and
possibly "liable to other debts due by the said Robert in his lifetime ...
." This was executed on 23 Sept 1803 (Jessamine CO Deed Book A pp.
447-447) and recorded in Louisa CO, VA on 10 Apr 1810! (Louisa Deed Book L pp.
431-432). Parties to this did not include either Catherine (Anderson) Holladay
or Robert Anderson.
The second power of
attorney was to a Joel Miller, who though called friend and
"relative," was not a relative, but a medical-doctor friend of John
B. Miller's son Dr. Beverly Miller and John's son-in-law Dr. Everard Meade
Patterson to whom his daughter Margaret Tate Miller was married. It was
executed on 23 Sep 1818 in Jessamine CO, KY, and recorded on 27 Oct 1818 in
Louisa CO, VA (Louisa Deed Book O pp. 77-79). As I found this first in Louisa
CO I did not check Jessamine for the deed book in which it was recorded. John
P. Anderson had died since the first p-o-a was signed and this time
"Zachariah Holladay and Catherine Holladay his wife late Catherine
Anderson of the County of Adair" were a party to the p-o-a, plus the other
living siblings, including Robert Anderson. It reads in part, " ... for
the purpose of attending to, and adjusting all our unsettled business of
whatever description in the state of Virginia relative to the estate both real
and personal of Col. Robert Anderson dec'd late of Louisa County and of David
Anderson his son."
This can be found in
Michael C. Watson, Adair County, Kentucky Civil Suit Index 1802-1826 (Columbia,
KY: Watson Pub., n.d.) p. 30. The suit was filed prior to 1819 and refiled a
second time on 8 June 1824 in box 9; it is said to contain 37 pages. This suit
mentions land entered to David and surveyed 4 Dec 1786. On 8 Aug 1801 a patent
was issued "for 3.200 acres to John P. Anderson, assignee of Robert
Anderson who was heir at law of David Anderson." Elizabeth, John P.'s
wife, claimed she had not given up her dower rights when it was sold.
Finally let me quote
from Maurine and Glen Harris, comps., Concise Genealogical Dictionary (SLC:
Ancestry, 1989) page 128: Junior (also Jr.) the youngest of two persons having
the same name - the two persons were not necessarily related, especially before
the nineteenth century. When the older of the two died the younger often
assumed the Sr. title or dropped the title altogether.

Dear Pat,
Thanks for an excellent web site on the
Andersons. I'm a descendant of Archelaus Moon and Ann Anderson, daughter
of Robert Anderson and Francis
Poindexter. Since you don't have anything on them yet, I thought you might like
some information on this family. Ann was actually Archelaus Moon's second wife.
His previous wife was Blanche Higbee, by whom he had three children before her
death, (c.1783). Archelaus Moon was born ca. 1750, in New Kent Co.,VA., the son
of Jacob Moon, and died before Jul.11,1796, in Fayette Co.,KY.
Archelaus Moon married. 1st, (ca.1777),
Blanche Higbee. The children of this marriage were: Josiah Pleasant Moon, (b.ca.1778), md, (Sep.18,1806
Charlotte,VA), Elizabeth McKinney; Martha M, (ca.1780), who married,
(apr.10,1804 Charlotte,VA), George C.Friend; and Elizabeth Ann Moon, (ca.1783).
Archelaus Moon and Ann Anderson were
married Dec.29,1784, in Bedford CO.,VA. They were still in Bedford Co. as of
May 27,1792, [when Archelaus served as executor of his brother Jacob Moon Jr.'s
estate], but settled in Fayette Co.,KY before his death, (ca.1795/96). They had
seven children:
1. Frances Poindexter Moon,
(b.ca.1786 Bedford,VA - d.1820 Jessamine,KY), married, (Nov.27,1806 Jessamine,KY), Thomas Nuttall,
(b.ca.1776 Strabane Twp., Washington Co.,PA - d.1822 Jessamine Co.,KY), son of
Elijah Nuttall and Mary Price. [After Frances died Thomas married Nancy
Pollard, who subsequently md. Albert Herndon].
Thomas and Frances Moon Nuttall had three children: Elijah Anderson
Nuttall, (1813/13 Fayette Co.,KY - d.bef.May 1874 Honey Creek Twp., Crawford
IL), md., (Jun.6,1835 Henry,KY), Rebecca Nuttall, (1813-1880), his 1st cousin,
daughter of Price Brewington Nuttall Sr. and Mary Ditto; Thomas Price Nuttall,
(b.1815/17 Fayette KY - d. ca.1834/35
Henry KY); and Archelaus Moon Nuttall, (Feb.28,1818 Fayette,KY - Aug.14,1896
Honey Creek Twp., Crawford,IL), md., (Sep.24,1838 Henry,KY), Mary Frances
Nuttall, (1818-1890), his first cousin, daughter of Price Brewington Nuttall
Sr. and Mary Ditto. [Archelaus Moon Nuttall, his brother Elijah Anderson
Nuttall, and their wives are all buried in the Nuttall Cem., Honey Creek
Twp.,Crawford IL]. Archelaus Moon Nuttall was my great-great-grand father.
2.

I'll try sending more later. Since I
haven't been working on this line for a while, most of my records for the
Moons, Andersons, and Poindexters are in boxes right now. What I've sent here
is based on what can be found in my computer files, and therefore somewhat
limited. In addition to the Andersons and the Moons, I've also done a great
deal of research on the Dabney descendants. There are a few
problems with your
information on this family which need to be corrected. Susanna Swann, who later
married David Anderson, was Cornelius Dabney's second wife. His first wife,
Edith ---, was the mother of at least
four children: George, (ca.1670 - Oct.1729); Dorothy; Sarah; and James. Cornelius
Dabney and Susanna Swann had at least two children: Cornelius Jr.,(1686
-1764\65), who md, (1721), Sarah
Jennings; and Mary,
(Jan.22,1688 - sep 7,1748), who married Thomas Carr. Ruth ------, who married,
(ca.1714), James Trice, was a daughter of Susanna Swann was a daughter of
Susanna Swann. But there's some disagreement as to who her father may have
been: Cornelius Dabney, (ca.1640-1693), or David Anderson. I tend to suspect
she was David Anderson's daughter, based on later dates for her descendants, but this could be wrong.
Ok, I've got to stop for now, thanks once
again for an excellent site and keep up the good work.

Dear Pat: You were
most kind to deand me a couple months ago information on Frances Anderson
marriage to Thomas Ammon. I did find one source in the History of Louisa County
by Malcolm Harris which I wrote to you about. When I was in the states(I live
in Italy) I found additional source for this marriage, since it was not
confirmed in the book by William Pope Anderson.
The addtional sources:
Marriages of Some Virginia Residents 1607-1800, Volumn 1 list Thomas Ammon and
Elizabeth Anderson.
History of Louisa
County Virginia, Malcolm Harris. page 256.
I found these sources
at the Huntington Library in California. I hope this helps others who need a
confirmation of the marriage. I do have a question about the Massie link, I
have seen Ceclia Massie connected to other parents in the Massie rootsweb
pages. I understand that Penelope sister also married a Massie and that is the
confusion.
Thanks again for your help. Mary Wyatt

In a Civil Suit filed before 1819 by
"Betsy" there is a discrepancy in her maiden name, which is said to
be Reed. However, the children bear 6 Rice names, including "Rice

Samuel R. Anderson was born in Feb. 1804 in Bedford County,
Virginia. He died in 1883. On 25 Nov. 1824, he married Susan A. Miller
1799-1844, daughter of John B. and Susannah (Anderson) Miller--dau. of Robert
Anderson. I am seeking the names of his parents. Some sources have indicated
that his wife Susan Miller was a cousin of his in relation to her mother who
was an Anderson. Does anyone know this family?
Samuel was a man of many talents. By occupation, he was a
farmer, merchant, cashier of the Bank of Nashville, Tennessee, and was the
postmaster for Nashville, Tennessee for eight years. He reached the rank of
"Lt. Colonel of the First Tennessee Regiment, 'The Bloody First,' in the
war with Mexico. On May 9, 1861, he was commissioned a Major General in the
State Troops and Brigadier General in the provisional army of the Confederate
States on July 9, and on August 5 was assigned to the command of a brigade,
which included the First, Seventh, and Fourteenth Tennessee Regiment of
infantry for service in the mountains of West Virginia under General Loring.
Later he served under Lee, Jaskcon, Magruder and Archer. On November 4, 1854,
he was recommissioned Brigadier General. After the close of the war, he
returned to Tennessee..." He also served under General Joseph E. Johnson
in the Peninsula Campaign. After his wife Susan died, he married Mary Parker

Pat, many thanks for
your e-mail. It is much appreciated. Your website is great and has helped me a
lot. I still have lots of questions, mainly because I usually find what I'm
looking for in the last 20 minutes at any repository. Am trying to get W.P.A.
(Anderson-Overton) on library loan to look at page 40 (it is in print; I ought
to break down and buy a copy!) and Susanna (Swan) Anderson's will. It is
abstracted on page 106 of WPA's Anderson Records, where she is said to have
first married Cornelius Dabney. You don't mention that so am curious.
I descend from Robert
Anderson who married Frances Poindexter, through their daughter Susannah who
married John B. Miller. Susannah's sister Ann Moone, who married Archeleus,
gave one of her daughters Dabney as a middle name, so I took page 106 to be
accurate. I could find no other connection through Moons or Poindexters.
When you trace names
like Anderson and Miller you have to do all the collaterals so I have
ended up with a lot of stuff not my
own. And I thought I was doing a pedigree, not a genealogy. I've had 2 crashes,
which clobbered not just the hard
drive, but back-ups. Find in re-reading the originals I often get a different
slant, so sometimes it is a blessing.
Again, thank you for
your e-mail and for keeping up the website. All much appreciated, believe
me. Bonnie Gunsaulus
