Notes on Rose Hawkes Day

Rose Day

           Mrs. W. H. Day, nee Rose J. Hawks, was born in Essex County, England, December 28, 1862, and passed away on October 5, 1945, at the Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa after a brief illness.
           She came to the United Sates at the age of eighteen and located at Ogden, Utah with her brother, Joe. She later worked in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she met and married Wilson H. Day June 9, 1886. The following spring, 1887, with their one daughter, Ethel Rose, they moved to Wilson Day's father's farm in Fayette county, Iowa. Here eight more children were born to them.
           In 1918 they retired from the farm and lived in Oelwein, Cedar Falls, and Waterloo. After her husband's death in Waterloo, Iowa on April 22, 1935, Mrs. Day returned to Oelwein where she resided until last year when she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. H. E. Birchard at Cedar Falls.
           Devotion to her home and family were her chief concern and interest. She was a woman of strong convictions and always stood firmly for the right and the higher interests of all, yet possessed a kindliness and friendliness that expressed itself in loving deeds that endeared her to all who knew her. More than 47 years ago she became a member of Grace Methodist church in Oelwein and has been a loyal and devoted member through the years. She took an active part in the Big Sisters Class, the Missionary Society and the Woman's Society of Christian Service.
           She leaves to cherish her memory five daughters: Mrs. H. E. Birchard of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Mrs. Harold Brownell of Stanley, Iowa; Mrs. F. F. Gorton of Eau Claire, Wisc.; Mrs. T. E. Stevens of Brainerd, Minn.; and four sons: Mr Clyde Day of Waterloo,......(remaining text was left out of the newspaper)
