Joseph and Mabel Day Shipton and Children

Shipton-Day Wedding
Joseph H. Shipton, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Shipton of this place and Miss Mabel Alice Day were united in marriage Thursday morning, July 24, at 10:30 o'clock at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Day of Fayette, by Rev. Dr. Parker. A sumptuous wedding dinner was served at 11:30, after which the happy couple went to Oelwein in H. F. Shipton's auto to begin their honeymoon trip to St. Paul, Minneapolis, and other points.
The bride is recognized as one of Fayette's most gifted and popular young ladies, having drawn to her a vast circle of friends by her charming personality and strong traits of character. In every way she possesses all the attributes of an ideal helpmate and life companion.
The groom, known to everybody as "Joe", is a young man of whom Clermont is justly proud, one who has made good and is destined to make his mark among the educational instructors of the near future. Being a graduate of the Clermont high school and U.I.U., he is well fitted for the work he has undertaken. He is in every sense of the word a model young man and has back of him the very best wishes of everybody in the community.
Mr. and Mrs. Shipton will begin housekeeping next month in Earlville, where Joe is superintendent of schools for the coming year.

Obituary of Joseph H. Shipton
Joseph H. Shipton, eldest son of H. F. and Bertha Hosford Shipton, was born on the old Shipton homestead near Clermont, Nov. 16, 1886, and died in Monticello Feb. 6, 1963, where he has made his home for the last few years.
He attended the elementary schools and graduated from the Clermont high school, after which he attended upper Iowa University and State University of Iowa. He was formerly superintendent of schools at Clermont, Columbus Junction and Marengo.
On July 24, 1913, he was united in marriage to Mabel Day of Fayette. Four daughters were born to them: Zoe (Mrs. L. L. Long of Maquoketa); Eileen (Mrs. Dale Hall of Orlando, Fla.); Marcella of Chicago and Maxine (Mrs. W. D. Moore, Jr., of Cedar Rapids); and one son, Robert, of Monticello.
Mr. Shipton is survived by his wife and five children; one brother and three sisters. They are H. R. Shipton of Calmar; Addie (Mrs. V. A. Seese) of Mt. Clemens, Mich.; Ruth (Mrs. Louis Olson) of Clermont; and Bertha Hartman of Highland Park, Mich.; and thirteen grandchildren.
His parents and two brothers, Frank and John, and two sisters, Myra and Ella, preceded him in death.
Mr. Shipton was always interested and influential in all education activities and a faithful member of the Methodist Church in the communities in which he lived, until his illness forced him to retire seven years ago.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon, Feb. 9, at Goettsch Funeral Home at Monticello by Rev. Howard Eldrenkamp and at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel at 3:30 p.m. Interment was made at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery at Cedar Rapids.
