Notes on Joseph Hanson

From the "Oelwein Register" March 1911.

Passed Away at His Home in This City Monday at 1:30 p.m.

Joseph Hanson, an old and well known citizen of Oelwein, passed away at his home on Third Ave, E., Monday afternoon at 1:30 after an illness of a few weeks. The end came as a result of a general physical breakdown resulting from old age. He had been a resident of this locality for the past fifty years. He was born in Keighley, Yorkshire, England, in 1827 and was therefore about eighty-four years of age. Two sons, one J. W. Hanson of Carrington, N.D. and another, J. P., of Minneapolis, were at the bedside when the end came. The date of the funeral has not been decided on as we go to press but will be announced later.

From the "Oelwein Register" March 1911.

Was Born in England but was a Resident of This Section Many Years

Joseph Hanson was born at Long Lee near Keighley, Yorkshire, England July 20, 1827 and died in Oelwein, Iowa, March 13, 1911 aged eighty-three years, nine months and twenty-three days.
Mr. Hanson came to this country in March 1858 and bought a farm near Oelwein at that time. His health having failed him he returned to England and remained about ten years. Returning to the United States he improved his farm and resided on it till about seven years ago when on account of advanced age and failing health he removed to Oelwein where he resided at the time of his death.
He was well known in the city and was often seen on the streets till within a few weeks past when he was confined to his home. He leaves to mourn his loss one daughter, Mrs. Edith Hanson Mosley, residing in Keighley, Yorkshire, England, and two sons by his second marriage, J. W. Hanson of Carrington, North Dakota, and John P., of Minneapolis, both of whom were at his bedside as the end drew near. During his last illness he was patient, never complaining to whose who watched by his bedside. The last services were held from the home of his nephew, Alfred Hanson, in this city Wednesday forenoon, conducted by Rev. Nickell, of the Baptist church and interment took place in the city cemetery.
