Notes on Arthur James Day

Arthur Day's funeral conducted at Arlington


          Funeral services were held Sunday, July 27, at the United Methodist church in Arlington, for Arthur James Day, 74. Rev. Laura Odegard officiated and the Gleim Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
          Pallbearers were all grandsons. Morse Burington, David Day, Dennis Burington, Greg James, Randy Howe and Willis Burington. Honorary pallbearers were Brian Day and Mark Boehmke.
          Arthur James Day, son of Rose and Wilson Day, was born on a farm in Fayette county, on Sept. 17, 1900. He received his education in the Fayette county schools and attended business college in Oelwein.
          He was assistant cashier at the Stanley Bank for three years, and started farming in 1924 at Riceville. At that time he married Frances Brownell, Oelwein, and they made their home at Riceville for two years, and moved in 1926 to a farm near Hazelton, which they owned and lived on for 13 years. In 1939, they purchased their present home near Arlington, which has been their home for 36 years. Three children were born to them, Eleanor, Mrs. Glen Burington, West Union; Leonard, Arlington, and Dorothy, Mrs. Ray Boehmke, Anamosa.
          Mr. Day was baptized and joined the Methodist church in Oelwein as a youth.
          He suffered a heart attack on Friday, July 18, and was taken to the Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Manchester, where he died on July 24.
          He is survived by his wife, Frances, three children, Eleanor, Leonard and Dorothy, 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; two brothers, Frank, Arlington, and Richard, Ames, and one sister, Miss R. Pauline Day, Glendale, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Glyde Day, and four sisters, Mrs. Ethel Birchard, Mrs. Hazel Brownell, Mrs. Bessie Gorton and Mrs Jennie Stevens.
