Obituary of Alice Smith Day

           Mrs. Alice Smith Day, daughter of Samuel and Hannah Park Smith, was born at Keighley, Yorkshire, England, Sept. 10th, 1863, and died at her home in Oelwein, Iowa, January 4th, 1943.
           At the age of six years she came to this country with her mother and a brother and sister. Her father, who had preceded them, had purchased a farm two miles north of Oelwein.
           Here she grew to womanhood, receiving her education in the rural school and a select school at Oelwein.
           On March 25th, 1883, she was united in marriage to E. E. Day. They established their home on a farm southeast of Oelwein, where five children came to bless this union.
           March 1st, 1900, they moved to Oelwein where the children received the advantages of a high school education. The next move was to Fayette, where, within the next 10 years each of the five children graduated from Upper Iowa University.
           In 1918 they returned to Oelwein where they have since made their home. Mrs. Day was converted in an evangelistic meeting held in the Crowfoot schoolhouse. After moving to Oelwein she united with Grace Methodist Episcopal church, which membership she retained at the time of her death.
           She was of a retiring disposition, a loving wife and mother, a kind friend, prefering the welfare of others to her own.
           Surviving are her husband, one son, E. V. Day of Tacoma, Washington, and four daughters, Mrs. J.H. Shipton of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. John McSweeney of Westgate, Mrs. Inez Irwin at home, and Mrs. Frank Welterlen of Edgewood; also two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Sarah Huntington, Mrs. F. H. Martin, Thomas and Richard Smith of Oelwein.
           Funeral services were held at the home on 6th St. NW., on Jan. 7, 1943 at 2:30 p.m., with the Rev. F. C. Witzigman officiating. Three granddaughters, Mrs. Eileen Hall, and the Misses Zoe and Maxine Shipton, sang "My Father Knows," and "Face to Face." Interment was made in Woodlawn cemetery.
